*இளைப்பு விடாய் தீர்த்தேனோ நம்பாடுவான் போலே* திருமாலை, யாழிசையுடன் போற்றிப் பாடிய பாணரை, திருக்குறுங்குடிப் பெருமாள், ‘ நம்பாடுவான்’ (என் பாடகர்) என்று சிறப்புப் பெயர் கொண்டு அழைத்தார். அன்று முதல் அப்பாணர் அவ்வாறு அழைக்கப்பட்டார். முனிக்கிராமம் என்ற ஊரைச் சேர்ந்த நம்பாடுவான், பாணர் குடியைச் சேர்ந்தவர். தினந்தோறும் திருக்குறுங்குடிக்குச் சென்று, அங்குள்ள நம்பி என்ற பெருமாளை யாழிசைத்துப் பாடிய பின் தான் தனது தினசரிச் செயல்களைத் தொடங்குவார். சூரியன் உதிக்கும் முன் காடு கடந்து திருக்குறுங்குடி சென்று, பெருமாளைப் பற்றிப் பாடிவிட்டு, மக்கள் எழும் முன் ஊர் திரும்பி விடுவார். கார்த்திகை மாத சுக்லபக்க்ஷ ஏகாதசி நாளில் நம்பாடுவான், இரவு முழுதும் விழித்திருந்து பெருமாள் புகழைப் பாடி, விரதமிருந்து, விடியும் முன் கோவிலை நோக்கிச் செல்ல ஆரம்பித்தார். காட்டில் இருந்த பிரம்ம ராக்ஷஸன், பாணரை வழிமறித்தான். பாணரைப் புசிக்க பிரம்மராக்ஷஸன் அனுமதி கேட்டான். பாணரோ, “என்னை உண்டு உன் பசியைப் போக்கிக் கொள்கிறாய் என்றால் எனக்கும் சந்தோஷம் தான். எனக்கு இவ்வுடலின் மீது எந்த ஒரு விருப்பமும் இல்லை. இது என் உடைமையும் இல்லை. ஆனால், திருக்குறுங்குடிக்குச் சென்று, நான் மேற்கொண்டுள்ள ஏகாதசி விரதத்தை நிறைவு செய்துவிட்டுத் திரும்பி வந்த பின் என்னை உண்டு உன் பசியாறுவாயாக!”- என்று கூறினார். முதலில் பாணரை அவன் நம்பவில்லை. ஏகாதசி விரதம் மேற்கொள்ளும் திருமாலடியார் சொன்ன சொல்லைக் காப்பாற்றுவார்கள் என்பதைக் கூறி, அதை மீறினால், மீண்டும் மீண்டும் பிறந்து, இறைவனை அடைய முடியா வண்ணம் ஆன்மா பிறவிக்கடலில் அகப்பட்டுக் கொள்ளும். எனவே, நான் வாக்குறுதி வழங்குகிறேன். நான் வருவேன்.” என்று கூறி விளக்கியவுடன் அவரைக் குறுங்குடிக்குச் சென்று வர அனுமதித்தான். நம்பாடுவார் திருக்குறுங்குடிக் கோயிலுக்குச் சென்று பெருமாளைச் சேவித்தார். தீர்த்தப் பிரசாதம் வாங்கிப் பருகி, ஏகாதசி விரதத்தை நிறைவு செய்தார். பிரம்மராக்ஷஸனிடம் உறுதியளித்தபடி வந்து நின்றார். பிரம்மராக்ஷஸன், ‘‘அடியவரே! சிறந்த திருமாலடியார் நீங்கள். தங்களைப் புசித்து மேலும் என் பாவத்தைப் பெருக்கிக் கொள்ள நான் விரும்பவில்லை! தாங்கள் இனிதே இல்லம் திரும்புங்கள்!’’ என்று கூறினான். நம்பாடுவான், தான் உறுதி அளித்தபடி, பிரம்மராக்ஷஸனின் பசியைப் போக்காமல் அவ்விடத்தை விட்டு அகல விரும்பவில்லை. ஆனால்,அவனோ அவரைப் புசிக்க விரும்பவில்லை. தன்னை இப்பாவத்தில் இருந்து விடுவிக்கும் சக்தி, நம்பாடுவானுக்கே உள்ளது என்பதை அறிந்த பிரம்மராக்ஷஸன், “ஏகாதசி விரதத்தைத் தொடர்ந்து அனுஷ்டித்து வந்ததால் பெரும்புண்ணியம் கிடைக்கும் அல்லவா? அந்தப் புண்ணியத்தில் எட்டில் ஒரு பங்கை என்னிடம் கொடுங்கள்”, என்றார். நம்பாடுவான், அதற்கு, “நான் பலனை எதிர்ப்பார்த்து விரதம் இருக்க வில்லை. அவரின் புகழ் பாடுவதால், பெருமாளின் மனமும் என் மனமும் குளிரும். எதையும் எதிர்ப்பார்த்து நான் செய்யவில்லை”, என்றார். “சரி, என்றால், நீங்கள் பாடும் ஒரு பாடலின் பலனை எனக்கு வழங்குவதாக கூறிவிடுங்கள்.” –என்றான் பிரம்மராக்ஷஸன். பிரம்மராக்ஷஸனின் நிலைமையை கண்ட நம்பாடுவான், மனம் வருந்தி ராட்சஸனிடம் அவன் கேட்டதைக் கொடுத்துவிட்டார். உடனே,பிரம்மராக்ஷஸ வடிவம் நீங்கி, அந்தணப் பிரம்மச்சாரியாக நிற்கக் கண்டார். தான் வேள்வி செய்தபொழுது செய்த தவறுகளின் காரணமாகத் தனக்கு இந்த அசுர உருவம் ஏற்பட்டதாகக் கூறிய பிரம்மச்சாரி நம்பாடுவானுக்கு நன்றி கூறிச் சென்றார். பிரம்மராக்ஷஸன் உணவு கிடைக்காமல் பசியும் தாகமும் வாட்டிய நிலையில் இருந்தான். அந்த இளைப்பு, விடாய் இரண்டையும் நம்பாடுவார் தீர்த்தார். அத்துடன் சாபம் நீங்கவும் உதவினார். திருக்கோளூர் அம்மாள், “நம்பாடுவான் போல் பிறருக்கு உதவி புரிந்தேனா?”- என்று வினவுகிறார். *========********========**========********* <https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Z2X-9c0Cmjk/Wn1808Udk8I/AAAAAAAAFIU/G4hHxto8m4IAy-HcH7doKZ9CIL__whu3ACLcBGAs/s1600/Thirukurungudi-Sri-Azhagiya-Nambi2.jpg> Thirukkurungudi Nambi *iLaippu vidAy thIrththEnO nampAduvAn pOlE * Thirukurungudi is a town which is located in Tirunelveli district, Tamil Nadu, South India. Thirukurungudi is a very ancient village referred in Varaha Purana and Brahmanda Purana. Kaisika Puranam which reveals the life of the great devotee, Nampaduvan, is within Varaha Puranam and was narrated by Varaha Nainar (Third incarnation of Lord Vishnu) to his consort, to demonstrate the greatness of singing the glories of the Lord and the benefits his devotees will get as a result of their unflinching faith on the Lord. It is believed that those who fast and listen to Kaisika Puranam, on Kaisika Ekadasi will attain Vaikunta Moksham. Nampaduvan’s real name is unknown. Every day, early morning, even before the sunrise, he would carry his Veena and cross a dense forest and reach the holy Thirukurungudi Nambi Temple and sing songs praising the Lord and his consorts. Admired at the unflinching devotion of him, the Lord, Sriman Narayanan cherished him as "Nam Paaduvan", meaning “my singer”. On the outskirts of Thirukurungudi which is on the banks of the holy Tamaraparni river, there lived a devotee who was born in a chandala family, a low class in society on those days. Every morning, crossing a dense forest before sunrise, he would go to Thirukurungudi Nambi Temple and would offer songs to Perumal. One time, in the month of Karthigai (between Nov 15- Dec 15), a Shukla Paksha Ekadasi (the Ekadasi that falls before the full moon) day, he stayed awake the whole night chanting the names of the Lord and singing songs about the Lord and left very early in the morning to visit the temple and get a glimpse of the Lord and sing about him. On his way through the forest, a Brahma Rakshas (Demon), who was really famished for days saw Nampaduvan and stopped him. So delighted in seeing his prey after days, he urged towards Nampaduvan, saying that he’s going to eat him. Nampaduvan, standing unafraid in front of the Brahma Rakshas, spoke in a serene voice – “I am really blessed to satisfy someone’s hunger on such a day like this! I am really delighted to give up this body which separates me from being with the Lord. I do not indeed fear death for I have no attachment to this body. But, could you let me go see the Lord residing in the Thirukurungudi Nambi Temple and complete my jagratha vratham. I will return sooner after singing songs to him. You can eat me and satisfy your hungry stomach after that. I promise you, I will return swiftly. Just let me go see the Lord!” The Brahma Rakshas did not trust him or his words. “Is this your way of escaping from me? If I let you go now, you will never return.” Nampaduvan promised that he will return for sure and also that he would attain a certain sin if he did not return to keep his vow. After making 18 promises, he finally states that “If I do not return, I would have committed the biggest sin that exists – that of comparing and equating Lord Narayana with others. And I will become a sinner who will never get liberation from this cycle of births.” After listening to the words of Nampaduvan, the Brahma Rakshas let him go. Nampaduvan went to Thirukurungudi. Standing in front of the temple, he sang praising the Lord and after getting a glimpse of the Lord among the crowd, he returned as promised. Seeing the way Nampaduvan is truthful in keeping his vow, the Brahma Rakshas realized that only Nampaduvan could release him from this body. Moved by the behaviour of Nampaduvan, the Brahma Rakshas asked for the fruits of Nampaduvan's service (song, the Brahma Rakshas asked for the fruit of at least one song) to the Lord. Nampaduvan did not agree to the request. He replied, “I did not sing to the Lord, expecting anything from him. I sing daily only to make sure the Lord is pleased in my song. I expect nothing in return from him. So you can eat me and fulfill your hunger.” After some more requests, finally, Nampaduvan agreed to give him the fruit of his singing one song sung in the Kaisika Puranam. Receiving that, the Brahma Rakshas was liberated. Appearing in front of Nampaduvan in his original form, the Brahma Rakshas said that he was a brahmin called Somasharma in his previous birth. Because he committed a sin during a yaga, he was born as a Brahma Rakshas. And thanks to Nampaduvan, he has been liberated!
