*என்னைப்போல் என்றேனோ உபரிசரனைப் போலே!* உபரிசரன் என்றால் மேலுலகங்களில் சஞ்சரிப்பவன் என்று பொருள். உபரிசரன் வசு என்னும் மன்னன், இந்திரனால் பரிசாக அளிக்கப்பட்ட தங்கத் தேரில் மேலுலகம் சென்று வருவான். உபரிசரன் வசு சத்யசீலன், சிறந்த மன்னனாகத், தர்மத்தின் வழியில் நாட்டை வழி நடத்தினான். அதனால் தர்மதேவதை மகிழ்ந்து, வசுக்களைப் போல் அவன் பாதங்கள் பூமியில் படாது வானத்தில் நடக்குமாறு அவனுக்கு வரம் வழங்கினார். ஒருநாள் ரிஷிகளுக்கும், தேவர்களுக்கும் வேள்வியில் பலியிடும் விலங்குகள் குறித்து சர்ச்சை எழுந்தது. ஆடு போன்ற விலங்கினை வேள்வித்தீயில் பலியிட்டால் மட்டுமே வேள்வி முழுமை பெரும். வேதத்தின் படி, எந்த ஒரு உயிரினையும் கொல்லுதல் பாவம். ஆதலால், ஆடு போன்ற உருவைத் தானியங்களில் உருவாக்கி அதை யாகத்தில் இட்டனர் ரிஷிகள். இதற்குத் தேவர்கள் எதிர்ப்புத் தெரிவித்து, அந்த யாகத்தில் ஆட்டையே இட வேண்டும் என்றனர். வாக்குவாதம் முற்ற, அவர்கள் உபரிசரனை அணுகி, தர்மத்தின் படி தீர்ப்பை வழங்குமாறு வேண்டினர். உபரிசரனை, ஆட்டை உயிர் பலி கொடுக்க வேண்டும் என்று தீர்ப்பு வழங்கினான். அதனால் வெகுண்ட முனிவர்கள் அவனை அசுரர்கள் நிறைந்த பாதாள லோகத்தில் புகும்படி சபித்தனர். அசுரர்கள் உபரிசரனைப் பலவகையிலும் துன்புறுத்தினர். ஆனால், இரக்கமில்லாமல் உயிர் பலிக்கு ஆதரவளித்த பாவமே தன்னைப் பாதாள லோகத்தில் தள்ளியது என்பதை உணர்ந்த உபரிச்சரன், திருமாலை உள்ளன்போடு வழிபட்டு, உயிர்களுக்குத் தீங்கு நினையாத வைணவ நெறியே சிறந்தது என்பதை அசுரர்களுக்கு எடுத்துரைத்தார். அசுரர்கள் அவரிடம், ‘‘யார் அரக்கர்? யார் வைணவர்?’’ என்று கேட்டதற்கு, அன்று உயிர் பலி கொடுக்க பரிந்துரைத்த என்னைப் போன்றவன் அரக்கன். விஷ்ணுவின் பாதம் வணங்கி, எல்லா உயிரும் ஒன்றென நினைக்கும் வைஷ்ணவன், ‘‘இன்றைய என்னைப் போல் இருப்பான்’’ என்றார். திருக்கோளூர் அம்மாள், “உபரிசரன் போல் தன்னையே உதாரணமாக எடுத்துக்காட்டி வைணவ நெறிகளை விளக்கினேனா?”, என்கிறார். (உபரிசரனைப் போல் தன்னையே உதாரணம் காட்டும் அளவிற்குத் தன்னால் உயர முடியவில்லையே என்று ஏங்குகிறார்.) *========********========* * ********======== ********= * *ennaip pOl enREnO uparisaranaip pOlE* Uparichara Vasu was a king of Peru who ruled his kingdom as per dharma. His ruling and his name were famous for his knowledge of dharma and his devotion towards truth and virtue and the way he follows it. Due to that, he was blessed by the Goddess of Righteous (dharma devata) that he could move without touching the ground. He was named so because Upari - Upwards and Chara - Going i.e. the one who goes Upwards always (his feet was above the ground). One time, during his rule, an argument broke out between sages and the devas about the sacrificial offerings during a Yaga. As per Vedas, killing any animal is a sin. But, in every Yaga performed, it requires a sacrifice for the completion. Only a sacrifice completes a Yaga and the purpose will be served. It is said that a goat can be sacrificed after the reciting of specific mantras during a Yaga. Due to the rule that animals should not be killed in general, the sages created a model resembling a goat using grains, sacred with the mantras and sacrificed it in the Yaga. The devas did not accept this sacrifice. They wanted a real animal sacrificed in the Yaga. Therefore, the devas and the sages took their case to King Uparichara Vasu and asked him to give a rightful solution. Uparichara Vasu, who followed dharma, stated that the sages should give sacrifice, in the form of an animal. Angered by this, the sages cursed him that he would rot in the underworld. Uparichara Vasu, when he was tormented in the underworld by the asuras, did not feel hurt or bad, and realized that his support to kill a life is a sin and only as a result of it, he is in the underworld. He understood that every soul on earth is equal and every life on earth, be it small or big in size, is all the same. He, in the underworld, kept thinking of Lord Vishnu all the time and even advised the asuras that every soul on earth is equal and that's how Lord Vishnu and Vedas ask us to live. When the asuras asked him "Who is an asura? and who is a Viashanava?", Uparichara Vasu replied, "A soul like mine who supports killing of another soul is an asura. A soul which is like the one I am now, someone who follows the words of Lord Vishnu and considers all soul on earth are equal is a true Vaishnava."
