1. Pot Potichhu

It is a local saying in Malayalamthat a function has been carried out in an
excellent manner. This is told whilelike conducting a marriage or upanayanam or
shashti poorthi or Satabhishekam.

The saying is also used onoccasions of temple festivals or cultural
performances.

2. Potiyan.

Small kids in Kerala are veryoften called locally as Potiyan. The kid may be
very brisk or many a time smallcomparing to other children. Instead of Potiyan
sometimes kocchhan is alsoused. But even when many grow up the same name
continue to call them. We have ayoung man named Potiyan in my home who was a
taxi driver. He owned a taxi andwas very helpful.

3. Chayappoti and kappipoti.
Though both are not very muchpowdered still tea and coffee are called powders.
One colour is called coffeepowder colour.  These two powders havemore authority
in drinks coffee and tea respectively. Sometimes sugar alsocomes as powder.
Update- Instant coffee powder is very nice powder.
4. Iddali Mualkai poti, Parippu poti

As told for coffee powder, theseare also not fine grounded, but still called
powder. Invariably these tworequire companion- ghee or some type of oil and
again they are assistants toIddali or dosa or rice. Parippu poti is nicer than
iddali mulakaipoti.  After consuming iddali/dosai many times smallquantity of
the iddalimulakaipoti mixed in oil remains with tiny pieces ofiddali. Many are
interested to consume them. At that time they get power, it ismomentary. There
are people first prepare iddalimulakaippodi mixing with oil, taste a small
quantity alone and then take with iddali and dosa. Similarlyparippu podi.
Though it is invariably used with rice, there are many who keep asmall quantity
mixed with rice and keep as reserve and take after takingbuttermilk with rice.

5.  Salt powder, pepper powder andchilli powder.
Though the first two areavailable on dining table, no body taste them
separately. They are only addedin any dish if there is their deficiency in a
food item. However among thethree peppers has special priority. Many people add
him to dishes at theirchoice. Chilli powder is in kitchen. Many young women
carry them in convenientpacket during travels to throw on the eyes of
miscreants when they go beyondlimits. There are sambar poti, rasapoti etc etc
in Kitchen.
6. Potimas

Potimas is a dish using eitherPotato or Jack fruit seeds (Chakka kuru). The
dish has no powder appearance, itis a smashed item. Like Mysore pack, he too
got the name.

7. Wheat powder

I think the powder maximum usedis the wheat powder to make chappathi, Porota,
Poori, rotti, and gothambudosai. Fine wheat powder maida is used in preparing
noodles. Main constituentof biscuits is wheat powder. Maida is also used for
making paste with hours ofshelf like to paste film posters etc.

8. Used in liquid form

There is a powder made fromliquid form and preserved and re used only in liquid
form. Yes- the milk powder.

The drinks like Horlicks, viva,Bornvitta etc. are in solid form and used by
adding them to hot water/milk.  The difference with milk powder is, while
theothers are added to boiling water, the milk powder is added to ordinary
water to make milk and then boiled.

9. Poti polum kanan illa (Even a bit of powder is not seen)

This is another colloquial sayingto say that an item hasexhausted well before
thought of. Probably the saying would havebeen originated from solid things
made from powder like Poruvanlangai or Ravaladdu or of the sort with no powder
seen on them. Now it is used for all items.

In the feast in the first sittingall things would be well served. Some items a
few items get exhausted in two orthree sittings. It may be difficult to prepare
again. So that item would bemissing in further sitting. On such occasions also,
this missing of poti isused.

10. Medicines and powder form

Earlier some medicines used tocome as powder and we have to add a specified
quantity of boiling water andshake before use.  They would be used assmall
quantities in liquid level. Some rare medicines too come in powder form.
Forailing elders many times, the tablets are powdered, mixed with water and
orallygiven. For them swallowing tablets may be very difficult even after
breaking into two or three pieces.

11. Murukku and cheeda ppoti

For those with missing of teeth orfor those even after performing root canal,
it may be difficult many times tobite Murukku and eat. Similarly cheeda. So
they have two alternatives – eithereats half fried or powder and use. Some ate
roughly broken

12. Tooth powder

I think tooth powder is very nicecomparing many other powders. The beauty of
tooth powder it is never swallowed, but spit away after brushing. Probably tooth
powder is the only item we do soas spitting.

13. Poti used for smell.

As thought, talcum powder is theone I thought. Some where I read actually the
cost of preparation of thematerial like talcum powder and tooth powder is only
25% of the actual cost wepay. The remaining is for the CONTAINERS and
ADVERTISEMENTS.

14. Poti for getting vigour.

The snuff is applied in the noseby many and it is told is for vigour.
Afterwards surely sniffing would be thereand cleaning is done with hand
kerchief. With all these things, the smell wouldremain with the person.

15. Work area powders.

There are powders like Sabina, kadapari, ash etc.  for cleaning vessels. To
remove dirt from cloths there is washing soda, and soap powder/detergentpowder.
Of course there is bleaching powder to clean overhead tanks and applyin
slippery area to remove paayal.

16. Poti thattuka

Atmosphere is filled with dust. The dust would be carried by winds and they
would settle everywhere. Periodiccleaning is required to remove the dust. Even
papers kept in locked cupboards wouldhave dust after a time. Cleaning of dust
is important. After every day prayerin the Padmanabhaswamy swamy temple the
royal family head dusts his feet beforeleaving temple- He does not taken even
dust from the feet. He is padmanabha daasa.

17. Other powder forms

The list of powder forms is vast.Earlier ink was coming as powder. The blue
still comes as powder. Many hardware items like red oxide, putti come in powder
forms. In many plants there ispoompodi used for pollination. Distemper comes as
powder packs and added withwater.
