MUKKU- DIP – JUNCTION- GIVEPRESSURE IN BODY
In Malayalam and Tamil the word MUKKU has the same threemeanings- Dip, junction
and giving pressure in body for relieving.

For getting brightnessin white clothes it is apractice to dip them in water
added with powder or liquid blue. For gettingslight toughness to dhotis it is a
practice to add a little starch in water andthen add blue and dhotis are
dipped, squeezed and dried. Now we have readymadestarch- revive.Earlier we used
to add starch-water from rice. On Saturdays I do recollect mymother keeping
ready the drained Kanji for dipping my washed dhotis and shirts. It was practice
to wash dhotis and shirts on Saturdays for going to school /college. Now all
washing is with machine except some very costly/colourdraining items sometimes.
Products like comfort is added for fragrance toclothes.

Update- With covid 19 essentially Dettolor savlon are added  in the
washingmachine itself to kill germs if any during washing.

For Amalgamation  the specified metal item is dipped fully inthe other in the
boiling liquid form for a specified time. and taken out anddried.  I think the
gold plating beforethe electrolysis period would have followed this procedure.
Hence the gold covered itemswere called Mukku pandam.

Dipping is not only in these forms- For preparing Bajji,Potato bonda and
Pazhampori, the sized piece is dipped in to a batter made ofrequired items;
Sometimes the word thoickkal is used for this in Tamil.

At one time probably the institutions, shops etc used to bein a Junction area.
Hence the names Aspathri mukku, Peedika mukku, Treasurary mukku, Kachheri
mukku, and also Ampala mukku. Now the institutions are every where adequate space
and facilities are there. On those days the Banks, market etc. used to be in
junctions only. Hence theBank mukku, chanda mukku etc. Institutions were
identified with mukku. In my home the buses used to stop near the Library.Hence
Vayana sala mukku.

When there is constipation and difficulty for naturalrelieving, people give a
little pressure to move the waste. During naturaldelivery of infants, mothers
are asked to exert pressure for infant easilycoming out in the Labour room.
Mukkalum moolaum is a usage when a person expresses unhappinessor discontent
depending on the occasion.

Kaimukku was a process of punishment amongKerala Nampoothiries beforecenturies.
It was executed by Iyer at Sucheendram temple making the suspectedto dip his
hand in boiling ghee to prove his innocence. If his hand did not getboiled , he
was considered not guilty.
