Being  a compilationthere may  be errors

1            Can youtell more about Mercury/Quick sliver/Padarasam?

Mercury ( புதன் கிரகம் )being the name of the 1st planet in solar system  and
is the quickest planet of all to completeone revolution around  the  SUN.

Named for thefleet-footed Roman messenger god, Mercury is the closest planet to
the sun, zipping around our parent star at an average of 36 million miles away.
However,Mercury’s orbit is nota perfect circle. The planet can pass as close as
29 million miles and as faraway as 43 million miles. Mercury spins slowly
compared to Earth, soone day lasts a long time. Mercury takes 59 Earth days to
make one fullrotation. But a year on Mercury goes fast. Because it's the
closest planet tothe sun, it goes around the Sun  with anorbital speed of about
47.87 km/s , which is a period of about 87.97 Earthdays.

Between this rapidorbital period and its slow rotational period, a single year
on Mercury isactually shorter than a single day.

Mercury is also the smallest planet in the solar system, measuring just3,032
miles wide at its equator. That makes it only slightly larger thanEarth’s
moon.Hydragirum (mercury) being the only flowing metal  that has the quickest
molecular motion amongall the metals.Hence the quick word is for the quicker
molecular motion andsilver is its color.

Mercury is also known as “quicksilver,” a reference toits mobility. Speed and
mobility were characteristics ofthe Roman god, Mercury, who served as a
messenger to all the other gods andshared his name with the planet nearest the
sun.

Mercury is a chemical element with the symbol Hg andatomic number 80. It is
commonly known as quicksilver andwas formerly named"Hydrargyrum". A heavy,
silvery d-block element, mercury is the only metallic element that is liquid at
standard conditions fortemperature and pressure; the only other element that is
liquid under theseconditions is the halogen bromine, though metals such as
cesium, gallium, andrubidium melt just above room temperature.

Mercury occurs in deposits throughout the world mostly ascinnabar (mercuric
sulfide). The red pigment vermilion isobtained by grinding natural cinnabar or
synthetic mercuric sulfide.Mercury isextracted by heating cinnabar in a current
of air and condensing the vapor.

Mercury was found inEgyptian tombs that date from 1500 BC.

In China and Tibet, mercury use was thought to prolong life, heal fractures, and
maintain generallygood health, although  vapor leads to serious adverse
healtheffects.

The ancient Greeksused cinnabar (mercury sulfide) in ointments; the ancient
Egyptians and theRomans used it in cosmetics. The element mercury is named for
the Roman godMercury. Mercury is the only element to retain its alchemical name
as itsmodern common name.

Mercury dissolves many metals such as gold and silver to form amalgams.Iron is
an exception.

Mercury readilycombines with Aluminium to form a mercury-aluminium  amalgam
when the two pure metals come intocontact. Since the amalgam destroys the
aluminium oxide layer which protectsmetallic aluminium from oxidizing in-depth
(as in iron rusting), even small amounts of mercurycan seriously corrode
aluminum. For this reason, mercury is notallowed aboard an aircraft under most
circumstances because of the risk of itforming an amalgam with exposed
aluminium parts in the aircraft.

Mercury is used inthermometers, barometers, manometers, sphygmomanometers,
float valves, mercuryswitches, mercury relays, fluorescent lamps and other
devices.  Amidst concerns about the element's toxicityhave led to mercury
thermometers and sphygmomanometers being largely phased outin clinical
environments in favor of alternatives such as alcohol- orgalinstan-filled glass
thermometers and thermistor- or infrared-based electronicinstruments. Likewise,
mechanical pressure gauges and electronic strain gaugesensors have replaced
mercury sphygmomanometers.

Mercury does notreact with most acids. Mercuryis a relatively poor conductor of
heat, while  Most metals are excellent thermal conductors.

Mercury remains inuse in scientific research applications and in amalgam for
dental restoration.. It is also used in fluorescent lighting. Electricity
passed through mercuryvapor in a fluorescent lamp produces short-wave
ultraviolet light, which thencauses the phosphor in the tube to fluoresce,
making visible light.

USES:

1.Mercury is used inspirit lamps.

2.Used indentistry to fill cavities caused by tooth decay.

3.Mercuric iodide isused in dermatology.

4.Mercury oxide isused as a medicine for eye inflammation.

5.Mercury(II)fulminate is a primary explosive which is mainly used as a primer
of acartridge in firearms.

6.The disinfectantmercury compound thimerosal is an organomercury compound
found in vaccines, tattoo inks, contact lens solutions, and cosmetics.

7.Some transittelescopes use a basin of mercury to form a flat and absolutely
horizontalmirror, useful in determining an absolute vertical or perpendicular
reference.Concave horizontal parabolic mirrors may be formed by rotating liquid
mercuryon a disk, the parabolic form of the liquid thus formed reflecting and
focusingincident light.

Today, the useof mercury in medicine has greatly declined in all respects,
especially indeveloped countries.Thermometers and sphygmomanometers containing
mercury were invented in theearly 18th and late 19th centuries, respectively.
In the early 21st century, their use is declining and has been banned in some
countries, states andmedical institutions. In 2002, the U.S. Senate passed
legislation to phase outthe sale of non-prescription mercury thermometers. In
2003, Washington andMaine became the first states to ban mercury blood pressure
devices.

Q2         If we dug ahole a mile wide to the Earth's core, would it spew lava?

A2          An attempt was made to make a holemany years ago in the USSR (now
Russia) but it was only possible to reach 12.3 km deep andthat distance only
represents 0.2% of the total distance to the nucleus.

They could onlyreach that distance because the temperature is very high. They
did not have machines that resist high temperatures, and there is nomachine
that can be so long to reach the core of the earth.
