Pranam
Music mends people to live harmoniously; one who does not know to hum,
is a more or less tyrant. An old say.
Sangeetham is samyak plus geetham
Ramanujacharya secundrabad Sanskrit college head says,” Samaveda and its
musical element, the topic of day. He says that the chanting of mantras in
any Veda is based on musical elements taught in Saamaveda.“The notations
began as the first letters of each of the mantras like ‘Sala Bhasmi’,
'Amogha Bhasmi’ and so on the essence of the Veda. ‘One is ‘Sa’, the other
is ‘Aa’ and the other is ‘Ma’ which is part of ‘Omkaram’, made of ‘Aum’.
When added they sound ‘Sama’ what the Veda named after, symbolic of music,”
he explained. ‘Sa’ is feminine gender, symbolising Prakriti (nature). ‘Aa’
is masculine gender and is ‘Paramatma’, the almighty. ‘Ma’ stands for
‘Jeevatma’ and all the three constitute ‘Tatva Trayam’. Thus ‘Sama’ is in
essence ‘Tatva Trayam’ which are ‘Prakriti, ‘Paramatma’ and ‘Jeevatma’.
What we call ‘Sangeetham’ is a ‘Samyak Geetham', he explained, which when
metrically framed turn into ragas like Mohana or Bilahari that sounded
pleasant.
Ramanujacharya then defined *Saptaswaras* as vivid expression of the tatvas
of Prakruti, Paramatma and Jeevatma, embedded in the very concept of
Saamaveda. “The expression of all the saptaswaras explained these very
aspects of Saamaveda. ‘Shadjam Mayuro Vadati’ meaning sounds a Peacock
makes. Koil’s tweak is ‘Panchamam’. Similarly each of these swaras were
those of horse, elephant, Swan and so on. This union of Saptaswaras charmed
the world that helped to portray the conditions of the world and society.
‘There is a sloka that says even the almighty is protecting the universe
with ‘Saptaswaras’’, he explained. All the swaras were born out of
‘Omkaram’. Even the swara notes are born of out of placing of the three
letters in permutations and combinations, he says. Hence we salute
‘Omkaram’.
In another interpretation, ‘Sa’ is Ganamu, ‘Aa’ stands for Nrityam and the
entire body gets exercise by song and dance. Letters in songs like
‘Dantavyas’ and ‘Talavyas’, exercise facial muscles, he said. Natyam is
simply a homage to the Tala structures that emanate from the face,
responded by seven parts of our body to these saptaswaras. ‘Durjyam’,
‘Lasyam’, ‘Tandavam’ and ‘Pralaya Tandavam’, ‘Nartanam’, ‘Natanam’ exercise
body parts.
Of the thousand branches in Saamavedam, only 12 branches are available, the
rest are lost, he informed.
- So sound of Sangeetam or music emanated here in this land, routed thro
the chosen animals’ natural sounds which rendered 72 melakartaha raagaas.
Apart from the *Sama Veda*, there are references to music and musical
instruments in the *Upanishads*, *Brahmanas* and *Puranas*. Epics like
*Ramayana* and *Mahabharata* also have some references to music. The
music system in practice during Bharata’s period must have been similar in
some respects to the present day Carnatic system. Bharata's* Natya*
*Sastra* mentions many musical concepts that continue to be relevant to
Carnatic music today.
- Tamil works like *Silappadikaram*, *Tolkappiam* and other Sangam
literature works give old Dravidian names for the seven notes in the
octave, and describe how new scales can be developed by the modal shift of
tonic (shifting the reference *Shadja*) from an existing scale. In the
old Tamil music, the concept of *Pann* corresponds to that of the modern
Raga. The rhythmic meters found in several sacred musical forms
like *Tevaram,
Tiruppugazh*, etc., resemble the talas that are in use today. Above all,
Tamil music was practised by the native Dravidians of Southern India. Since
Carnatic music is prevalent in South India, many scholars believe that the
ancient Tamil music is an important source from which Carnatic music is
derived. PANATRUPPADAI IS THE MUSICAL TRIBE LIFE OF CREATING POEMS AND
SINGING.
- The *Tiruppugazh* of Arunagirinathar
<http://carnatica.net/composer/arunagirinathar.htm>,has complex rhythmic
meters, which remain unique and unsurpassed in their grandeur.
- The *Gita Govinda* of Jayadeva
<http://carnatica.net/composer/jayadeva.htm> is a monumental work of the
medieval period in Sanskrit, consisting of 24 songs, each set to a
particular Raga. The rhythmic meter is determined by the meter of the
verse. *Ashtapadis* (*ashta* meaning eight and *padi* meaning foot).
These are popular throughout India even today, though the original tunes
are lost.
- *Sapta Swara Names*
- *Meaning*
- Shadja
- Peacock
- Rishabha
- Ox
- Gandhara
- Goat
- Madhyama
- Krouncha Bird
- Panchama
- Cuckoo
- Dhaivata
- Horse
- Nishada
- Elephant
- The interesting thing to note here are:
- Bird Sounds – “Sa, Ma & Pa”
- Animal Sounds – “Re, Ga, Dha & Ni”
