MYAVU MYAVU (CAT) PART 1

Dear friends,

Today morning I found near thestaircase three cats resting. On seeing me they
ran away. Cats were rare to seeafter Covid19 impact in our area.

I had earlier stored a lot ofinformation about cats. I thought of sharing them
in parts.

While other animals do not havethat much liking, cats have much liking to drink
milk. It is told, whether acat has drank or try to drink, THAT MILK IS UNFIT
FOR HUMAN CONSUMPTION.

There is a saying – Like catdrinking milk. Cat drink milk CLOSING THE EYES and
probably it thinks no bodyis seeing it.

Though it does not do much harm, and wander and jump walls, still it’s look is
fierce if we look at its eyes itwould make us remember it is FROM THE LEOPARD
FAMILY. Specially the black cats. The white and brown cats are rare and most
common are grey cats.

The crossing of cat whilestarting for an important work is considered
in-auspicious. It is considered asDUSSAKUNAM (bad omen).  Many times I haveseen
– a cow or heard of cows followed by a cat crossing. Sometimes a catcrossing
followed by the cows while starting.

Every time sakunam is notpossible to observe, so I take the help of God
Vigneswara, make a prayer andgive a small offering and start requesting for his
blessings. If the offeringis not given there is no mental satisfaction as far
as I am concerned.

Mostly it is a compilation.

Sincerely,

1. Smelling and hearing power of cats

The domestic cat has thescientific name FELIS SILVESTRIS CATUS, and is a small,
usually furry, domesticated, carnivorous (living on flesh) mammal.

It is often called the housecat,or simply the cat when there is no need to
distinguish it from other felids andfelines (Cat family animals). Cats are
valued by humans for companionship andability to hunt beings like rats and
household pests. Cats are similar inanatomy to the other felids, with strong,
flexible bodies, quick reflexes, sharp retractable claws, and teeth adapted to
killing SMALL PREY.

As crepuscular predators, cats use their acutehearing and ability to see in
near darkness to locate prey. Not only can CATSHEAR SOUNDS TOO FAINT FOR HUMAN
EARS. Cats can also hear sounds higher infrequency than humans can perceive.
(This is new information to me)

This is because the usual prey ofcats (particularly rodents such as mice) makes
high frequency noises, so thehearing of the cat has evolved to pinpoint these
faint high-pitched sounds.Cats also have a much BETTER SENSE OF SMELL THAN
HUMANS.

2 Poochaikkarum koottinu Venda - Solitary hunters

Cats are solitary hunters, stillthey are a social species, and cat
communication includes the use of a varietyof vocalizations (meowing, purring,
trilling, hissing, growling and grunting)as well as pheromones and types of
cat-specific body language.

Cats have a rapid breeding ratecomparing to other animals. Even in one delivery
it may deliver 4-5 new ones.

3. Cat domestication

Since cats were cult animals inancient Egypt, it was commonly believed to have
been domesticated there, butthere may have been instances of domestication as
early as the Neolithic.

A genetic study in 2007 revealed that allhouse cats are descended from as few
as five female African Wildcats (Felis silvestris lybica) c. 8000BCE, in the
Middle East. Somehow now too in Middle East the numberof cats are more- My
grandsons living in Middle East   used totell me- “Thattha- angae narayae
ppoocchai undu- pussi cat.. Ealla idathilayumkanalam”.

Cats are currently the most popular pet in theworld, now found almost
everywhere in the world.

4. Cat predecessor

The semi-feral cat is a cat thatis not owned by any one individual, but is
generally friendly to people and maybe fed by several households. Feral cats
are associated with human habitationsand may be fed by people or forage in
rubbish, but are wary of humaninteraction.

5. Names for female cat

A group of cats is referred to asa "clowder", a male cat is called a "tom", and
a female iscalled a "molly" or "queen". An immature cat is called a "KITTEN".In
medieval Britain, the word kitten was interchangeable with the word castling.

6. Pedigree biscuits

While seeing the biscuit in some medicalshops for dogs written   pedigree I
didnot know what was meant by it.

A cat who’s ANCESTRY IS FORMALLYREGISTERED IS CALLED A PEDIGREED CAT, purebred
cat, or a show cat. In strictterms, a pure-bred cat is one whose ancestry
contains only individuals of thesame breed.

A pedigreed cat is one whose ancestry is recorded, but may have ancestorsof
different breeds.

Cats of unrecorded mixed ancestryare referred to as domestic longhairs and
domestic shorthairs or commonly asrandom-bred, or mutt-cats.

7. Cat evolution

The wildcat Felis silvestris is aclose relative and possible ancestor of the
domestic cat. The Felids are arapidly evolving family of mammals that share a
common ancestor only 10–15million years ago, and include, in addition to the
domestic cat, lions, tigers, cougars, and many others.

Within this family, domestic cats(Felis cactus) are part of the genus Felis,
which is a group of small catscontaining SEVEN SPECIES.

8, Cat domestication

Cats have either a mutualistic orcommensal (either of them get benefit or ne
get and other has no harm)relationship with humans.

However, in comparison to dogs, cats have not undergone major changesduring the
domestication process, as the form and behaviour ofthe domestic cat are not
radically different from those of wildcats, anddomestic cats are perfectly
capable of surviving in the wild.

This limited evolution duringdomestication means that domestic cats tend to
interbreed freely with feralcats, which distinguishes them from other
domesticated animals.

However, several naturalbehaviours and characteristics of wildcats may have
preadapted them fordomestication as pets.

These traits include their smallsize, social nature, obvious body language,
love of play and relatively highintelligence; they may also have an inborn
tendency towards tameness (gentle-not wild)

There are two main theories abouthow cats were domesticated. Interested to know
the theories- I will start withit in my next posting.
