Times now report talks about the increased MSP and increased purchases by Government at the increased price. Some credit is due to the NDA Government also. Everything in India is not the gift of Nehru-Gandhi Dynasty.

Senior Minister Gadkari, has answered the additional questions raised by Anil ji very ably. Please go through the attached URL half way down, when Gadkari discusses the real problems of Government at purchasing above market prices and over production wheat and rice and import of agricultural products like pulses and oilseeds: -

. Demand and supply rules any market economy. If a country produces in excess of demand, prices fall and when the country produces less than demand prices rise.  Governments cannot go on purchasing at inflated MSP after heavily subsidising agriculture through almost free electricity, heavy subsidy on fertilisers, Crop Insurance etcetra and then sell rice Rs 3 per kg through PDS. India just does not have that kind of money.

Actually farming in Punjab, to some extent Haryana and Western UP is done by so called farmers. They are just ZAMINDARS. Actual farming is carried out by agricultural labourers from Eastern UP, Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh.  This is not a farmer’s protest. Started by ADTIS and has been hijacked by politicians who cannot get votes but want to overthrow elected Government through continuous DHUAN BANDH CHAKKA BANDH. A policy that converted SONAR BANGLA to one of the most backward states of India over the years by United Front, CPM and TMC rules.

While I am not trying to justify the agitation I would like to point out that It is good that the presentation accepted the basic fact that the govt is not doing the farmers any favour by increasing MSP year-on-year. MSP is a calculated figure based on input costs and therefore is bound to go up every year. The fact that MSP is a calculated figure also rubbishes any comparison with previous governments unless one shows that the formula for its calculation has been tweaked to benefit farmers. In fact Modi had promised a doubling of farmers income which like several other promises does not seem likely to materialise.

When these laws were enacted(without any discussions with the stakeholders or even within parliament), farmers’ unions had only one demand- the laws should make it illegal for any purchase below MSP. This was not accepted at that time, though it appears that the govt is now agreeable.

Overall govt has lost credibility due to shifting stand, someone says these are Khalistani terrorists someone else apologises, at one stage reference to SC is opposed but now proposed.

Meanwhile the agitation has also been highjacked and stance has hardened.

I think this whole episode should serve as a case study on how not to handle protests in a democratic state.

Thanks Ranjinderji,.

SO, why are farmers agitating?

I believed all along that farmers were wrong and rather than discussing what needs to be changed in these laws they insisted that the 3 laws have to be CANCELLED.
