Q2         What are some good examples of innocence?

A2          Guruswamy Sethuraman 16-1-2021

Tenali Raman was suffering from a bad cold. He kept blowing and wipinghis nose.
The nose turned red and his eyes swelled with tears. His wife broughtto him a
vessel filled with hot water. She put some herbs into it. As Ramaninhaled the
steam, the cold subsided slowly. Raman was relieved.

There was a reason why Raman was happy to get rid of the cold. Thatevening, he
wanted to visit the Kaali temple on the outskirts of the city andpray.

It was quite dark by the time he reached the temple. There was no one inthe
temple. A lamp was burning before the idol of Kaali Ma. Raman prostratedbefore
the goddess, got up and sat before the idol. With eyes closed he startedpraying
to Mother Kaali. Such was his devotion that Kaali Ma appeared beforehim with a
thousand heads and a thousand pairs of arms.

Raman was dazzled to see Mother Kaali in all her glory. He looked at herfrom
left to right and right to left with wonder. Then he burst out laughing.

Mother Kaali was not amused to see her devotee laughing at her. Sheknitted her
brows and frowned. Raman controlled his laughter, folded his handsin
salutation, and begged her to forgive him.

Mother Kaali was now curious to know what made Raman laugh.

“Mother,” said Raman instead of asking for a boon to fulfil his wishes ,“This
morning I had cold. I blew my nose and wiped it throughout the day andbecame
exhausted. “When I see you with your thousand faces I wonder what willhappen
should you ever catch a cold …… you will look funny blowing yourthousand noses,
won’t you?” said Raman as he broke into laughter again.

Though she was at first annoyed, Mother Kaali laughed at his wit. Yes.

Q3         Was it correct of Lord Indra to go to Ahalya disguised asher
husband? Then why was he not punished and why that chaste Ahalya waspunished?

A3          Mahat Aham Updated January 14-2021

It's correct for Gautama to punish Ahalya along with Indra, because, Ahalyadid
know that it's Indra in Gautama's disguise and still she does theunthinkable.

This account is narrated to Lord Rama & Lakshmana by SageVishwamitra. When Rama
Lakshmana along with Vishwamitra is going to Mithila,Lord Rama asks about the
hermitage that is near Mithila.

Valmiki Ramayana by Bibek debroy, Balakanda, Chapter 1(47)

On seeing Janaka’s sacred city, all the sages had words of commendationand
praise for Mithila and worshipped it. Raghava saw that there was ahermitage in
a grove near Mithila. ‘This looks like a beautiful hermitage. Whyhas it been
abandoned by the sages? O illustrious one! I wish to hear about it.Whose
hermitage was it earlier?’

Then Vishwamitra explains the whole story of Ahalya, Indra, and
GautamaRishi.Hearing the words spoken by Raghava, the immensely energetic and
greatsage, Vishvamitra, eloquent in the use of words, replied. ‘O Raghava! I
willtell you with pleasure. Hear the truth about whose hermitage this was and
whichgreat-souled one cursed it in rage. O best among men! Earlier, it belonged
tothe great-souled Goutama. This hermitage was divine and it was worshipped
evenby the gods. Earlier, he practised austerities here, together with Ahalya.

Indra disguises himself in Gautama Rishi's form and asks Ahalya to
haveintercourse with him.

O prince! The immensely illustrious one spent innumerable years here.Discerning
that there was an opportunity,360 the thousand-eyed one, Shachi’shusband,361
assumed the garb of a sage. He came to Ahalya and addressed her inthese words.
“O one who is well proportioned! Those who seek pleasure362 do notwait for the
time of conception to arrive. O slender-waisted one! I desire tohave
intercourse with you.”

Ahalya knew that the one in Gautama Rishi's disguise is none other thanIndra.
Yet she agreed to the request of Indra out of her curiosity (?).

O descendant of the Raghulineage! She knew that it was the one with the one
thousand eyes in the garb ofa sage. However, because of her curiosity, the
evil-mindedone acceded to what the king of the gods wanted.

After the intercourse, her and Indra, both are satisfied and satiated intheir
heart of hearts and urges Indra to leave that hermitage as immediately
aspossible.

Satisfied in her heart of hearts, she told the best of the gods, “O bestamong
the gods! I have been satiated. O lord! However, leave this spot quickly.O lord
of the gods! O one who shows honours! Always protect me and your ownself.”
Indra laughed at these words and told Ahalya, “O one with the excellenthips! I
am also satiated. I will go back to where I have come from.”

After having intercourse with Ahalya, Indra emerges from the cottage andnotices
Gautama Rishi's entrance, and gets shit scared.

After the act of intercourse, he emerged from the cottage. O Rama! He
wasterrified and scared that Goutama might return. He saw that the great
sage,Goutama, was entering. He was full of the strength of austerities and the
godsand danavas found him impossible to withstand. He blazed like the fire and
waswet with water from various tirthas. The bull among sages arrived there,
aftercollecting kindling and kusha grass. On seeing him, the lord of the gods
wasterrified. His face bore the marks of distress. Seeing the one with the
onethousand eyes, attired in the garb of a sage, the sage, full of good
conduct, became angry. He spoke thesewords to the one with evil conduct.

Sage Gautama curses Indra to losehis fertility and Indra's testicles fell to
the ground then and there.

“O evil-minded one! You have assumed my form363 and have done this. Sinceyou
have done what should not have been done, you will become infertile.”
Thegreat-souled sage, Goutama, said this in rage and instantly, the testicles
ofthe thousand-eyed one fell down on the ground.

He also curses Ahalya to remaininvisible and only live on air.

Having cursed Shakra, he also cursed his wife. “You will reside here formany
thousands of years. Subsisting on air and without food, you will
tormentyourself through austerities. You will sleep on ashes. You will live in
thishermitage, unseen by all creatures. When the invincible Rama, Dasharatha’s
son, arrives in this terribleforest, you will be purified. O one who is evil in
conduct! When hebecomes your guest, you will lose your avarice and confusion.
You will thenregain your own form and find delight with me.” The extremely
energetic Goutamaspoke in this way to the one who was evil in conduct. He
abandoned thishermitage, once frequented by siddhas and charanas. The great
ascetic performed austerities on a beautifulsummit in the Himalayas.

As you can see, Ahalya knew that it was Indra in Sage Gautama's form &yet she
performed intercourse with Indra OUT OF CURIOSITY. That's why Gautamacursed her
along with making Indra to remain testicles-less for some time.

Afterward, Indra gets a new setof testicles with the help of other gods, who
cuts and takes away a ram's a type of sheep's testicles and attaches themto
Indra.

Valmiki Ramayana, Balakanda, chapter(48)

‘Having been rendered infertile, with Agni at the forefront and with
adistressed face, Shakra spoke to the gods and large numbers of rishis and
charanas.“I have caused an obstruction in the austerities of the great-souled
Goutamaand have ignited his rage, but I have accomplished a task for the
gods.364 Inhis rage, he has rendered me infertile and has banished her. Because
hereleased that great curse, I have been able to rob him of his store
ofausterities.365 I have helped the cause of the gods. O best among the gods!
Olarge numbers of rishis! O charanas! Therefore, all of you should strive
torender me potent again.” HearingShatakratu’s words, the gods, with all the
Maruts and with Agni at theforefront, went to the ancestors366 and spoke these
words. “This ram hastesticles and Shakra has lost his testicles. Quickly take
away the testiclesfrom this ram and give them to Shakra. To cause you delight,
if humansoffer you rams without testicles, even then, you will grant them
supremesatisfaction.”367 HearingAgni’s words, the assembled ancestors severed
the ram’s testicles andgave them to the thousand-eyed one. O Kakutstha! Since
then, the assembledancestors enjoy rams without testicles and discard the
testicles if those areoffered.368 O Raghava! Since then,Indra possesses the
testicles of a ram. This is as a result of the power ofausterities of the
great-souled Goutama. O immensely energetic one! Therefore, enter the hermitage
of the performer of auspicious deeds.369 Savethe immensely fortunate Ahalya,
who has the form of a goddess.’
