MOOSHIKASTHREE Inthe Panchatantra, there is a story about a female mouse that was seized by a hawk, carried aloft, and dropped over the river Ganges. Below, the great sageYajnavalkya was performing his ablutions. The mouse fell right into his cuppedpalms containing holy Ganges water. 1.1 Mousebecome girl By contact with the combinedspiritual power of the sag and the sacred water, the mouse was transformed into a baby girl. Yajnavalkya took the child home and gave her to his wife to rise as theirdaughter. When the child turned twelve years of age, he thought to arrange themost excellent match for her marriage. 1.2 Yanjavalkya proposesmarriage for mouse girl Hefirst summoned the sun god Surya, who appeared at his ashram. But the girlthought him too blazing hot. Yajnavalkya asked the sun if there was one greaterthan him. Surya recommended the cloud, because the cloud could cover his rays. When the cloud came, the girl deemed him too black and cold. The cloud wasasked if there was anyone greater than him. He suggested the mountain, whichalone could stop his progress. When the mountain came before the sage, the girl said he was too rough andstony. And the mountain, when asked, recommended the king of mice as hissuperior, because he and the other mice made holes in him. 1.3 Mouse girl againbecome mouse When the kingof mice was called, the mouse-girl immediately agreed, thrilling with ecstasy. She begged Yajnavalkya to make her a mouse again, and it was done. 2.CHITHRASENA A Puranic taletells of Parasurama having beheaded his mother at the behest of his father. Thesage was advised by rishis to locate a particular temple and to worship thelingam as a penance. After much searching, Parasurama found the temple in themiddle of the forest, dug a pond nearby and began his purgation. 2.1 Chithrasena guards the pond A singledivine flower used to grow miraculously in the pond each day, which the sageParasurama offered to Shiva as worship. He appointed a yaksha, Chitrasena, to guard the flower fromwild beasts. Parasurama used to bring one hunted animal and liquortype beverages every day for the yaksha in return. 2.3 Chithrasena plucks the flower One day, Chitrasena felt tempted to worship Shivahimself. An enraged Parasurama attacked Chitrasena when he found the flower missing. 2.4 Battle between Parasurama and Chithrasena The battlelasted for 14 years, and was so fierce that a pallam, or pit, was created at the site. Laterthis place came to be called ’Gudipallam’, or ‘temple in the pit’, became Gudimallam over time. 2.5 Siva interfere Unable tochoose the victor, Shiva is finally said to have merged both into Himself, andthe figures still etched show the hunted beast and toddy pot in Parasurama’shand in a temple came at Gudipallam later. Brahma as Chitrasena, Vishnu asParasurama and Shiva as the lingam form this unique, unparalleled icon atGudipallam temple in Andhra Pradesh.
