12. Practical examination and luck

Many may beknowing, 100% marks are possible for certain subjects like light,
but notpossible for subjects like heat in Physics. Normally for practical
examinationprofessor and lecturer from a different colleges are deputed. Each
paper willhave the question written in hand. After writing the questions the
papers willbe mixed and kept upside down. As per serial number we have to enter
Lab,collect the top question paper and do the practical at the concerned seat.
The lucky one got best subjects.Mostly no practical we already did would be
there.

If I recollectpractical records we had to keep for review by the examiners.

13. Cessional marks

It was the markedawarded for general performance in the practical throughout
the year. Allstudents  would  get a good %. Probably to compensate
practicalmarks to a good extent.

14. All questions carry equal marks. Answer any ten

Some times thereused to have no separate marks. Fourteen  questions, each ten
marks. Such a title used to be after the subject inbrackets. We had to answer
any ten. These question papers had   a lot of flexibility.  When my son was
studying in engineeringcollege he had showed me such model question papers

15. Objective and semi objective question papers

Another version ofQuestion Paper would have some objective and some descriptive
questions. Whilemy son wrote the examinations, it was the model in 1990’s for
engineering. Bymere luck some objective would become correct by ticking if at
all answer was not knowing.

16 Semester systems

Semester system wasan improved version of Question Paper 1,2,3.4 on a subject.
In semester systemthe subject of study is divided in to sub subjects and when a
small subject iscompleted an examination is conducted. A similar pattern was
the old one also. He can forget the subject if gotgood marks in cemster,

Butpractically many students like to fail if he could score only pass marks
orabove in a cemester. Next cemester answering  he may score above 80%
sometimes.

17.Selective passing examination

While I wasundergoing service, for section to Asst Engineer from junior
engineer, I had topass an examination with three subjects. One Question paper
covering alltelecom technology in a medium manner, another a specialisation and
a thirdrules and regulations of the department. For the rules and regulations
we could use departmentalcodebooks. These papers were three-hour duration.
Every one-hourtime used to be announced. Codebooks used to be tough mostly. No
compartmentalsystem, once failed again all subjects had to be passed. Failed
candidates losetheir seniority to the end of year of recruitment for promotion.

18. In service examination

During the courseof service, due to technology development in service coursed
conducted. Forthese courses passing was compulsory. I have passed about 22 in
service coursesup to 3rd generation  mobile.

19 Preliminary and final examinations

For IAS, IPS, IFS,ITS etc there are two examinations- One preliminary, another
final and theninterview. My son had written IAS Preliminary and by the time he
got foreignassignment and left. These questions were mostly not objective.
While I was inTrivandrum training centre many of my co lecturers had passed ITS
exam, butcould not score high in interview to the number of vacancies. We all
became ITS later bypromotion.

20 Entrance Examination

My son had writtenentrance examination for selection to Engineering College in
Tamilnadu.Questions used to be objective, but required a lot of calculations to
answer.Calculator was permitted for examination if I recollect. In addition
toentrance marks, 60% minimum marks in plus two  also were the criteria.
Entrance marks alongwith calculation of subject marks and age was the criteria
for selection. In Kerala it was just 50% insubjects and only entrance was
criteria. In these objective typesthe Question paper was also answer paper. Now
there is no entrance inTamilnadu for admission to engineering colleges.

The engineering entranceexamination is now for Neet, IEE etc. Similarly in
medical colleges.

21. Functioning as Asst Engineer examinations

I joined theTrivandrum training centre in 1991 and from 1992 to 1996 I was in
charge ofexamination.  There is separateexamination hall. Most examination
conducted in the morning preferably Mondayshaving Saturday and Sundayfor study.
Practical is conducted in Labs. The examination hall usedto be opened by 8.45
AM. Training centre used to function from 9 AM.  If another examination is
there, it used tobe after two or three days.

The invigilatorsused to collect Question paper and sometimes added paper to
answer slightlydescriptive answers. Most questions used to be objective and in
the same paper.Candidates had to enter roll number and batch. Mostly the
trainees used to complete the examination well beforecompletion of time.

Update- No separate payment for being in charge ofexaminations though it is a
tough work. It is additionaljob assigned to a lecturer.

For in-servicecourses just passing was sufficient. A certificate was issued for
successfulcompletion of course. A question bank was there. The questions in the
bank onthe subject would  be given in a randommanner for each examination.
These question papers were made ready on theprevious day. Later the paper
questions got changed to floppy. CD was not sopopular on those days.

For inductioncourses marks awarded in the general course too was the criteria.
So the methodof examination had a different pattern. Record of marks were
entered inregister.

22. Preparing for BSc Examination

On those daysprinted old question papers were available. I tried my best -
whether Ipurchased them from college bookshop or outside. I am not able to
recollect. HoweverI was having 5 or 6 years questions. The common topic
covered in them was well covered in the studies, with less priority forthe
non-covered ones. I had a confidence of preparation for theory, but for
practical no body had.

23. Enganae undu pareeksha (How was exam?)

This was thecustomary question on those days by elders. Normally the reply
would bepositive by many.

Moderation asrequired was there for the answers. Centralised valuation was
there on thosedays also for degree courses only.
