ITTAHA VATTAM (SMALL AREA)

Dear friends,

Ittaha vattam denotes a smallarea. When it is a small area, anything within
that has limitation. Thoughoriginally told as vattam, in later talks it denotes
a small area. Someinteresting look in to ittah vattam.

Sincerely.

1. A shop

In my home one Christian wasrunning a stationary shop in a rented building. In
the bazaar area about onecent area came for sale. He brought it paying more
money since competitionswere there. He constructed a three floor shop. Though
with in the shop staircase was built, still because of additional floors he
could have a lot ofthings kept neatly. He made the top floor for bulk keeping.
After this everybodyin the native used to identify the shop as ITTAH VATTAM
SHOP.

Recently I found in asupermarket, even after having 4 FLOORS AND VAST SPACE,
bulk keeping of thingsin the ramp. So much of stockings. Customers could take
their items from theramp also.

Update. It has become practice now in most supermarkets tokeep things in the
ramp/stair case to first floor. What I am not able tounderstand is giving much
space to keep biscuits, candies, wafer etc.

2. Ittah vattam on the postal cover.

On those days postal covers hadto be affixed with additional stamps for
registration after weighing. Machineprinting was only in large post offices.
One gentle man brought a cover, writing address from and TO occupying 90% of the
cover. Having higherdenomination stamps not there, 4 or 5 stamps were given.
But no space to affixthem.

The person asked the postmasterhow to affix; Postmaster looked at the area
occupied by address. Finally hesaid- Eae ettah vattam sthalatthu oru stamp
polum ottukkan pattilla. He advisedthe client to write address in small letters
in ANOTHER COVER.

(Those were the days; stamp hadto be affixed together, only on top right
corner, affixed with head up only)

3. Ittah vattam room.

One of my distant cousins desiredto have a table while studying in his room.
Without much thinking his fatherordered a big table. Only when it was brought,
it could not go through theentrance of his room. The table was bigger. Finally
carpenters were brought.Believe, pattika (frames) to support the roofing tiles
on the top were cut to alimited area and somehow, the table was lowered. Once
the table was put, therewas no space even to keep the chair and shelf.

His father was telling- if I say, I will putthe table and chair in a good
room, he is not agreeable. He wants to study inthe ittah vattam
chavatiextension. Father was a simple man who would not compel.

4. Ittahvattam.

Many of the sanctums in ourtemples have very less space. Even two priests
cannot sit. There could be somereason of providing such small sanctums in very
big temples. So the priestsused to comment – only ittah vattam sthalam only is
inside.

5. Rooms in the houses and furniture.

Without furniture the rooms wouldappear spacious. As furniture are added,
apparently room size would appearsmaller. A big hall in a house will appear
medium after putting one completesofa set and teapoy and TV stand.

Ittah vattam is used in manyinstances. In many offices there is no space for
persons to even stand afterkeeping all their tables, cup boards and side racks.

Many offices have steel almirahkeeping old and must records in the corridor
area, since rooms have no space.

In our telecom on those days manytelephone exchanges could not be expanded
since no space for added equipment in the room. Alternate location to have
another exchange and connectivityprovided. I recollect on those days when
manual Number please exchanges weremore common, in Tutucorin there were two
exchanges at Beach and town.
