DRESSCODE

Yesterday I was seeing the tele-serial Neeyum jnanum. In Zee TV Malayalam A rich
business man’s home, dealing in crores. The two ladyassistants to the host
woman always appear in a typical saree style, ironedfolders appearing with a
smile on lip.

A few days back I was returning from Bangalore in theDouble decker train. Now a
days the vendors provide, coffee, tea, water andnoodled in cup. What made me
wonder, 100% vendors appeared in well ironed andneat and new uniform, shirt in
light green colour. With all vendors the foldingof the shirt on ironing could
be well distinguished. With Covid 19, I thinksome special dressing code would
have been given to vendors.

Most jewellery shops, reputed textiles and most restaurantshave dress code. But
it was the first time I was seeing all vendors wearingbrand new uniform shirt
well pressed. This posting is about interesting dresscodes and related matters.
Hope an enjoyable reading.

Sincerely,

1. Hotel owner andChandanakkuri with kumkum.

Whet ever is the Varna of the hotel owner, while enteringif we see in the cash
counterthe owner or manager sitting, having sandal wood paste applied in
foreheadalong with kumkum or wearing holy ashes, it gives a special
attraction. We can see some auto drivers wearing kumkum and sandal, and they are
having aspecial attraction when they smile.  Evenin the house one minute if we
see wife not having kumkum or sindur, weimmediately point out. Aftertheir
wearing only we feel happy.

Most of us know, sapthapathi is murtham, mangalayam is nottold in our epics,
but through generations adorning thali has become themuhurtham and unless a
married women not wearing the golden chain/ turmericapplied thread with thiru
mangalyam,  allwould  not  be happy. Just imagine a Hindu marriage without
mangalya sutra tying. On those days Putava kota was there among nairs, can you
agree to it today?

I have written above as gold chain / turmeric thread. Ifwomen are wearing
turmeric thread continuously it is ok. But it will not befelt alright, a lady
continuously wearing gold chain attaching thali issuddenly wearing a turmeric
thread without gold chain. If at all the chain hadto be pledged, she may prefer
to wear a gold covered chain in its place.

2. Bride and wearingornaments

Before Muhurtha, the bride is adorning a good amount ofornaments. If quantity
is more, sometimes it may appear pride instead ofbeautiful appearance. Suppose
in a rich marriage the bride wear only very fewornaments. Unless it is notified
the bride has gold allergy, something unusualwould be felt. If at all the bride
by nature do not like more ornaments, atleast during function she should wear.

I could see in the tele-serial BALAMANI, a doctor bride Abhiramiwearing minimum
ornaments   and in spiteof would be mother in law’s words, she asks not to
compel her to wear more. Thedirector may be having something in picturing such
a character. But the point- on account of that incident themother in law
develops a bad feeling about daughter in law as disobedient.

3. Where are yougoing?

Normally my dress in the house is colour dhothi andordinary slack shirt. If I
change to anything else, it is first asked by mywife- where are you going?

At one time our dress was dhothi and 2nd cloth.Gradually 2nd cloth has become
occasional. It is for functions, going to temple etc now. If sudden guests
appear, and only dhothi is worn, anytype of 2nd cloth is worn. It could be a
towel also.

Many of us wear banian, with in the home, it is an outer garment. Justfor one
step outside the gate, it is not outer garment- inner garment.  For a
physically working person, it is mostlyouter garment.

4. Entha Sami - Innusrardhama?

If my father was seen withoutbhasmam in the forehead local nampoothiries used
to ask him- whether it issrardha day. Theyhave never seen my father without
applying holy ashes after making it as liquidand applying.

5. Participating inmarriage.

I cannot say how the custom has come, 98% of women attend marriage withsilk/
very cloth sari wearing on those days, now some may wear churidar costingabove
five thousand. Recently I had been to a textile shop with mydaughter, not a
single occasional churidar is priced below four thousand.

Most gents other than relatives, make it assure, new wellironed cloths giving
appearance are worn. Only the relatives wear, costly dresses. At one time coat
was aristocratic now it isshervani and kurtha set.

6. School uniform

While I was studying in school, during 1950-60’s. Knickersand shirt were worn
by us in primary and middle school. Teachers wore theirdesired and available
dress. Girls had skirt and blouse.  No uniform for either students or teachers.

By about 15 moststarted to wear dhothies and it continued to college. 60% of
lecturers used towear dhothi and shirt. The remaining 40% used to wear pants
and shirt. Look atthe condition today. Uniformfrom LKG is compulsory both for
teachers and students.

7. Today kids

Immediately after bath new dress which include essentiallyshirt. Anywhere going
out another new shirt and pant or knickers. No wearing ofa cloth worn on
previous day. No male kid can be seen without shirt normally.

8. Dress code- ahealthy practice.

Now we find dress code everywhere, in hotels, hospitals andjewellery and
textile shops. Due to identical dress sometimes we find difficulty to recognise
between twopersons also.

Rather than the code, the way it is worn, how hygienicallyworn are equally
important.

Uniforms were felt inferior with some staff at a time. Those days have gone
today.  In ChennaiAC buses have special uniform for driver and conductor. They
wear it veryneatly. They are very impressive including the well behaviour.
Similarly inBangalore airport buses.

This in no wayavoids the very well dressed and working very sincerely staff in
other buses. Sometimesthey excel these people. They address sir, ENTHAPPA,
PERISU, ENNAYYAall are words of yesterday!!

Mostwelcoming one is behaviour of Kerala and Chennai auto drivers and their
dress conscious.Similarly of taxi drivers.

Dresses of piolets, duty staff in planes, policedepartment, air force, navy ,
military are all always tidy, so no need to addmore on them.
Today I wasattending a marriage- What a change, All sasthrikals and their
assistants innew dress. Earlierthey used to appear with washed clothes mostly.
Priests in Sabarimalai temple also keep utmost neatness in dress and follow
code according to priority.
