MEGHAM (THE CLOUD) PART 1

Dear friends,

Recently while travelling inplane to Bangalore, the plane was going above, in
middle and below duringlanding and takeoff. I thought at that time to write a
posting on cloud.Information are compiled and posted with my additions.

Sincerely,

Gopala krishnan 12-1-2011.

Reposted on 5-2-2021 after editing and updating information.

1. Megha dootham

I have studied in the 9thstandard Megha dootham, a sandesa kavyam (poetry with
substanceto carry a message) by Kavi Kalidasa. In this a Gandharva is sending a
messageto his wife making cloud as messenger.

On those days I knew cloud hasdifferent colours, when it is very dark and thick
more rain is expected withthunder and lighting. The two heavy rain periods in
Kerala are Thulavarsham and Karkitaka pathi.Thula varsham is told so, because
it is in the Malayalam month Thulam, October-November.

Karkitaka pathi is told sobecause, it start in the middle of Karkitakam. Month
of June when the schoolsre open after vacation.

2. Megha Shyamala varnam

Lord Krishna is referred to haveMegha shyamalavarnam. (Skin having light blue
colour). Earlier I could notdigest colour of Blue for humans, but later seeing
different type of blood in nsects,I could digest the different colour of blue
for Krishna and dark for Balarama.

3. Sky without cloud.

Though I am not a sky watcher, lookingat the sky without cloud and full of
stars is very entertaining to me. We couldsee bright, less bright and twinkling
stars. Very late I knew planets would not twinkle and seeing Budhaand Sukra in
the sky and locating them was an excitement.

4. Sky with cloud

Normally we see sky with cloudand moving and standing forming different images.
Watching the sky with thewhite moving cloud, which would  not rainin summer, is
also enjoyable and makes one think and think. Suddenly moongetting hidden, then
appearing and again disappearing in clouds…

5. Passing through cloud

First time while going in theflight, seeing clouds belowthe flight was new,
though others have told and heard earlier.Seeing is believing, clouds need not
form at very high altitudes.

6. Changing face like a cloud.

This phrase is very often usedwhen somebody makes an expression of least liking
by another.

7. What is cloud?

A cloud is a visible mass ofwater droplets or frozen ice crystals suspended in
the atmosphere above the surface of the Earth or otherplanetary bodies . This
means clouds can be with other plants.

Clouds in the Earth's atmosphere are studied in the NEPHOLOGY or cloudphysics
branch of meteorology.

8. How cloud is formed and stands at heights?

Weknow Sun is a hot planet and light is coming from it, travelling light
years(Very very long distance). Lightfrom Sun reach us after a lot of
travelling.

Incominglight  generated by the Sun reflects back when itreaches the
Earth'ssurface; a process that warms the air closest to the ground. Reflction
means going back to the source. Light reflecting from our bodymake us see
ourselves in the mirror.

Thiswarm air tends to absorb moisture in the form of invisible water vaporfrom
water bodies (streams, lakes, river, sea etc), moist ground, and from plants.
Warmmoisture-laden air is inherently unstable and tends to rise to higher
altitudes where the surroundingair is colder.

Atmospheric pressure decreaseswith altitude( Probably a practical done by many
of us as students).(Weight at Himachal Pradesh for  an apple can be a  few
grams less  comparing to Chennai)

Sowhen air rises, it expands in a process that expends energy whichcauses the
air to cool.

Cold air holds less water vaporthan warm air, so clouds are formed when the air
is lifted and cooled to thepoint at which it begins to shed vapor it can no
longer retain. The vapor begins to condenseonto airborne hygroscopic particles
like dust and salt fromsea spray and becomes visible as cloud. So cloud is
formed on dusts.

Weknow rain and cloud are related. My next posting will be why all clouds do
not make rain, how rain occurfrom clouds  etc.
