KIDAPPU- COUCH.

Dear friends,

On those days most of our homeshad wooden CHARUKASERA- Easy chair. It occupied
a lot of space. Sometimes evenwooden boxes were kept beneath it which required
less frequent opening. Later EASYCHAIR came with wooden frame and thick cloth
in body. It was foldable andrequired very less space. Forretiring people many
times quality easy chair was complimented even in 1967’s. Now easy chair has
become an out offashion item. Lengthy Sofa has taken its place.

Elders used easy chair for nap.But for a sleep one required to lay with full
back on the surface. This couldbe a mat or bed. The person may lay on ground
over the mat or on a bed over thecot.

There could be exceptions like on the festival season many sleep on thebare
ground while seeing Kathakali etc. and getting sleepy.  Many are waked up in
the early morning byothers after the performance was over.

Kidappu or kidakkuka or laying   is a must for many animals and humans. While
one could see dogsand lambs laying on side, most other animals lie with their
back up. Dogs andlambs also lie with their back at top.

There could be animals whichcould sleep even while standing like the ass. In
the night all animals we can seelay down. This includes elephants which lay
with their back up and rolling andkeeping their trunk in the mouth after
midnight to very early morning.

Though we can see elephants lyingon their side during their bath by mahouts in
the rivers, their preferredsleeping position is with back at top.

I am not sure how monkeys sleepwhich live in trees or such animals mostly live
on trees.

After food or while tired, aperson like to lie. There are many who could get
sleep only if they sleep sideway or backside up. But this is for sleep. When
fully tired everybody lay atback.

A person may get tired due toillness or age or hard work.  Today’sposting is
about Kidappu.

Sincerely,

Gopala Krishnan 26-8-2013.

1. Parasurama lying with his head on the lap of Karna.

In the epic Mahabharatha we havean instance of Parasurama getting extreme tired
lying with his head on the lapof Karna his sishya.  Parasurama fell into sleep.

In the meanwhile a black antstung strongly Karna. Blood started oozing from the
stung area. Karna feltsevere pain but felt not to disturb the sleeping Guru
Parasurama.

After a while Parasurama got upand found blood flowing from the body of Karna.
Parasurama felt if such a severe pain could withstand, then Karna should be a
Kshathria and not a poor Brahmin boy.Parasurama felt it was hiding a truth from
him and got angry which lead to acurse also…

2. Duryodhana sitting near the head and Dharmaputhra at the feet of
LordKrishna.

Another incidence fromMahabharatha is before the Great War. War became
inevitable. Arjuna and Duryodhana went to see Krishna. After meals Krishna was
takingsleep/ nap in the cot.  Not todisturb, Arjuna who came to see him sat at
the feet. In the mean whileDuryodhana came and sat near head.

After a time Krishna woke up.First he saw Duryodhana sitting near head and then
Dharmaputhra sitting nearfeet. After preliminary talks Krishna asked first the
purpose of his visit toDuryodhana.  Duryodhana wanted his helpin war with SENA.
(MILITARY HELP) and when Dharmaputhra requested, giving allsena to Duryodhana,
he said, he would be with Pandavas without taking anyweapons.  So he became
Parthasarathi.

3. Kidappilavuka.

It is common for the aged to laymore due to sickness or tiredness. Some
frequently getting ill during old ageis referred as “MikkavarumKidappila”
meaning almost bedridden. This does not mean, he is not able to move or do his
primary works forhimself. But he requires more rest.

4. Deenam vannu kidappilavuka (On account of illness getting bed ridden)

On account of certain illnesslike chickenpox etc. one is tempted to lie. If at
all he wants or he could, hewill not be permitted to move outside, since the
disease could spread throughair. So mostly till they recover they have to lie
and take rest. Such patientsare asked to lie on Neem leaves.

5. Inpatients in Hospitals

In the hospitals while somepatients require   full rest and for takingdifferent
tests the patients are admitted as in patients and asked to lay incots. On
their gradual recovery they would be gradually permitted to sit orrelax more.

6. Relaxing by laying down by workers.

Now a day having less physicalpower, most workers lay and take rest for an hour
before commencing afternoonwork. It is a very common scene in work sites 20-30
people lying in the afternoon.

7. Anantha padmanbha

Ananthapadmanabha (Mahavishnu) isthe deity in lying pose over Anantha, face
slightly to one side.

8. Gayasura

Gayasura lied down on his backand permit Vishnu to perform Yagya. On account of
this place got the name Gaya.
