AMLA HONEY-PROCESSED GOOSEBERRY YesterdayI found in the provision store a new item- AMLAHONEY in a hexagon pack pricedRs 10-00 each. The pack contains one big size goose berry with seed processedin Honey. It has been written best before six months-So I thought I canpurchase a few packs. Earlier my son used to bring processed gooseberry- aflattened item having preservatives and added sugar from foreign supermarketsor spice store. Whatever it is, these types of processing are recent as felt byme.
Update- Now processed gooseberry in honey and dried isavailable in large supermarkets. I eat one or two pieces after meals if fruits arenot available. Earlierthe gooseberry was eaten as such or consumed as pickle. In my boyhood days thegooseberry I have seen was small about 2 cm diameter maximum. Now largegooseberries are moreavailable than smaller ones. These have a diameter of at least 3-3.5cm. Shelf life is comparatively less comparing with smaller ones. Some interesting information aboutgooseberry. Itis told the first tree originated on earth is Gooseberry. Very late I read itstrunk is hard and will not decay. Planks made from the gooseberry are used tokeep over the water springs in the wells. There is a direction one should notgo more deeper than the plank in the well. The plank is said to be the end ofthe well. The plank iscalled nellippalaka. Thereis a saying also- Nellippalaka kanunnathu varae kazhikkuka- meaning eating tillthe exhausting the item in the vessel. Nellikkais the most common usage for meaning gooseberry in Malayalam. Amla is theSanskrit word. Amla is dried and used for many ayurvedic preparations. Amla is also used as the approximate measurement of a small item. Thereis a saying in Malayalam- Moothavarchollum, muthu nellikkayum- Aadyam kaikkum, pinnae Madhurikkum(Elder’s words and ripen amla would first felt sour, later felt sweet). Amlagrows as a medium tree, and trunk and leaves are also medicinal. The leaves arevery small and thin small gold item is often compared to amla leaf. Thejuice of amla is offered to Lord Siva for Abhishekam. Of course a littledifficult to prepare. Writer- R. Gopala Krishnan dated20-3-2017.
