POONKOZHI KOOKIAPPOL-2

(ABOUT SUN RISEWHEN COCK CROWED)

Dearfriends,

Thisis 2nd part of the posting about hen/chicken/cock.  I have changed the
title suggested by SriVenkitaraman Perinthalmanna. I am also thankful to Sri
APS Money for thecorrection of   first  line suggested in  the first part of
the posting.

Letme further go in to interesting details of cock, hen and chick.

Sincerely,

GopalaKrishnan 14-3-2021.

9 Kozhi chekanjathu polae (Like the hensearched for worms)

Normallywhile the hand writing is very bad and like scribbling and not in line
and notlegible, it is often told as a similar to the above.

Iam not able to tell the reason, the hand writing of most present day
childrenand adults of the day are very good/ good or at least satisfactory.
Very fewhand writing now a day we see not legible.

Ihad one of my officers, at Trivandrum whose hand writing was totally
illegible.Even one sentence we could not make out if he writes. So the senior
officersused to call him and discuss so that illegibility do not matter much.
Similarly I had a clerk while at Namakkal. Ifhe writes a letter will be a
protrusion above a line. No letter could belegible.

10. Kozhi thooval as pen

Ihave heard the quality feather of the cock was collected; it’s end was
dippedin ink and used to write before pens were available. But I have never
seen anybodydoing it, though in boyhood days we have written with end of cock
feather forfun after learning of such practice told in the primary class .

11. Use of egg

Duringflooring works(till about 20 years or so) egg was broken and  the fluid
from the egg was added to read oxideor black oxide and added to cement and
stirred for use as adhesive inflooring.  Later Fevicol started using
replacingthis practice .  I have heard in thePadmanabhapuram palace in
Thakkala, the black floorings were made usingcharcoal, egg fluid and kummayam.
(Shells)

12. Generally about chicken

Thechicken biologically called Gallus domesticus is a domesticated fowl,
asubspecies of the Red Jungle fowl. The male chicken is called Cock or rooster
and female as hen.

It is one of the most common and widespreaddomestic species.  It is told there
are more chickensin the world than any other species of bird. Humans keep
chickensprimarily as a source of food, consuming both their meat and their
eggs.

13. Initially cock was not for meat oregg!!!

Thetraditional poultry farming view of the domestication of the chicken is
statedin Encyclopaedia Britannica (2007): "Humans first domesticated chickens
ofIndian origin for thepurpose of cockfighting in Asia, Africa, and Europe.
Very little formalattention was given to egg or meat production... (Source-
wikipedia)

14. Origin and spreading

Theorigin of coke is said to be from India. From India the domesticated fowl
madeits way to the Persianized kingdom of Lydia in western Asia Minor, and
domesticfowl were imported to Greece by the fifth century BC. Fowl had been
known inEgypt since the 18th Dynasty, with the "bird that lays every day"
having cometo Egypt from the land between Syria and Shinar, Babylonia,
according to theannals of Tutmose III

15, Pullets and cockerels

Inthe UK and Ireland adult male chickens are primarily known as cocks, whereas
inAmerica, Canada and Australia they are more commonly called roosters.
MALESUNDER A YEAR OLD ARE COCKERELS.

Females over a year old are known as hens, andYOUNGER FEMALES ARE PULLETS.
Sometimes the babies are also called as chicks, and the meat is commonlycalled
as chicken.

16. What was the original name of cocksand chickens?

Thespecies as a whole was then called domestic fowl, or just fowl.

17. General biology and habitates

Chickensare omnivores. In the wild, they often scratch at the soil to search
for seeds, insects and even larger animals such as lizards or young mice.

Theadult rooster can be distinguished from the hen by his larger comb (Poo –
reddish in the colour onthe head)

Chickensmay live for five to ten years, depending on the breed.

Incommercial intensive farming, a meat chicken generally lives six weeks
beforeused for meat use. I am adding it because it is general information. Hens
ofspecial laying breeds may produce as many as 300 eggs a year. After 12
months, the hen'segg-laying ability starts to decline, and commercial laying
hens arethen used for meat use.

18. Guinness book of world records

Theworld's oldest chicken, a hen, died of heart failure at the age of 16
according to the GuinnessBook of World Records. (From wikipedia)

19. Identification of roosters.

Roosterscan usually be differentiated from hens by their striking plumage of
long flowing tails and shiny, pointed feathers on their necks (hackles) and
backs (saddle) whichare typically of brighter, bolder colours than those of
females of the samespecies.

Theidentification must be made by lookingat the comb, or eventually from the
development of spurs on the male's legswhile the difference between males and
females is less.

20 Comb and wattle

Adult chickens have a fleshy crest on theirheads called a comb or cockscomb,
andhanging flaps of skin either side under their beaks called wattles. Both
theadult male and female have wattles and combs, but in most breeds these are
moreprominent in males. (My aim is to introduce the words COMB AND WATTLE)

21 Beard in chicken

A muff or beard is a mutation found inseveral chicken breeds which causesextra
feathering under the chicken's face, giving the appearance of a beard.

22. Chuuta kozhia parappikkuka (Fly theburnt cock)

Domesticchickens are not capable of long distance flight, although lighter
birds aregenerally capable of flying for short distances, such as over fences
or intotrees (where they would naturally roost). Chickens may occasionally fly
brieflyto explore their surroundings, but generally do so only to flee
perceived danger.

InCherthala temple, the cocks and chickens are grown ups, mostly they rest
ontemple roofing and fly between ground and roof. Sometimes three or four fly
togetherlike crows there. The same I have seen in the Kodungallur temple also,
thoughthe area of temple is small and always congested.

Flying the burnt bird is a term used inBlack magic (manthravadam). While
livecocks are not able to fly more distance in the black magic it is told they
canfly after burning.

23. Habitate

Iam very much interested this add this topic.Chickens are gregarious birds
andlive together in flocks. They have a communal approach to the incubation
ofeggs and rising of young. Individual chickens in a flock will dominate
others, establishing a "pecking order", with dominant individuals having
priority for food access andnesting locations. Removing hens or roosters from a
flock causes atemporary disruption to this social order until a new pecking
order isestablished.

ADDINGHENS—ESPECIALLY YOUNGER BIRDS—TO AN EXISTING FLOCK CAN LEAD TO VIOLENCE
ANDINJURY.

24. Nest and adaiyirikkal (laying andwarming up eggs)

Henswill try to lay in nests that already contain eggs, and have been known to
moveeggs from neighbouring nests into their own. Hens can also be
extremelystubborn about always laying in the same location. It is not unknown
for two (or more) hens to try toshare the same nest at the same time. If the
nest is small, or one ofthe hens is particularly determined, this may result in
chickens trying to layon top of each other. Hens used to sit over the nests
warming up the eggs so that chicks come out afterincubation period.

Update- Now mostly warming up of eggs  are  done artificially in incubator

25. Are you on incubation (Similar tochicken sitting on egg?)

Whenpeople simply sitting looking here and there in a particular place
withoutmoving this saying is used- Iyyalentha adai irikkuka anao?

I will continue in next posting. Mostlythis part is a compilation.
