MULAKKAL-BUDDING About one month back my wife gave to me a big turmericgot from the vegetable shop, desiring me to plant in Tulsi matam. There is a practice of growing turmeric plant along with Tulsi inTamilnadu.
I looked at the turmeric for roots. Giving me anychance to comment she added, shall I bring the pick axe? If you plant seedling will come immediately. Istopped my looking, received the pick axe and tried to find out a location tobury it in Tulsimatam. Though big, the turmeric had no roots visible. About five years ago I was coming through theBuvaneswari Nagar main road at Bangalore. I found a small pick axe to the sizeof eight inches in length and weighing above ¾ kg in a shop. I was attracted to it, gotfitted with handle and carried in by hand bag along with clothes to my home inChennai. All workerslike it to remove weeds. I use it to dig pits to 3-4 inches depth using it. I made a pit, put the slightly smaller side up. Itremained there. Along with Tulsi the turmeric also watered daily. What awonder- Two days back Ifound a tiny leaf of one cm protrudingfrom the turmeric. Today three leaves have appeared. Yes, now it willgrow. I thought of different types of budding can be my topic today. Budding has other meanings also. The flower juststarted appearing visible in the plants is called buds. Many seedlings appear from stem as budding. Most budding appear from seeds. Aninteresting look in to budding. Sincerely, Gopala Krishnan. 17-3-2021. 1Rose buds. There cannot be any who feel very happy on seeing the bud from rose plant appearing. As theplant mature with branches more buds would appear . Practically very few pluckthe buds. Buds plucked would not blossom. Yesteryears rose meant, only rose colourflowers. Now due to cross breeding rose is appearing in white, red, blue, yellow etc colours. Yester years rose garlands were made using rose colourflowers. Now mostly red colour flowers are used for garlands. Probablyabundancy. 2. Buds fromjasmine Buds from jasmine are plucked while they are about to blossom.Water is occasionally sprinkled and they blossom in a few hours. The budsretain life for some time. 3 Pavizhamalli(Coralflower) Though closely observed, within seconds the flowers blossom from buds and buds appear also suddenly. 4 Hibiscus- Chembarathi The flowers appear as buds and plucked only when blossom. 5. Mulza Mulza is the word meaning bamboo inMalayalam. 6. Coconutseedlings. The coconut seedlings are planted after budding and atleast 3-4 leaves appeared. They are planted aftertaking pit of size 4’x4’x3 ‘depth and watered till it grows to a height of 3-4feet height. Normally in central Kerala any coconut kept in loftbuds, they are planted immediately and considered as blessing 7. Paalikai inBrahmin marriage During Palikai in Brahmin marriage water is sprinkled by 9 sumangalies in theorder, in Navadhanyams (Nine pulses representing Navagraha). After a periodthey should bud and planted by the couples together. 8 Kids in 4th/5thstandard First I recollect thewarning to very naughty students oppose and sometimes try to raise hands to beat other students - Theteachers used to talk of them when commenting or telling- Mottennu virinjilla(Not yet come out from egg/still buds). Not only boy students but some girl students too are of the nature. Whatever control imposed, even afterbecomes matured this habit would continue with many if it has come throughgenes. If it is not through genes they would be gentlemen/women in future. 9 Other buddings The plantain leaves appearing tender are called Thalirila(Budding leaves). In some places it is eaten and added in salads. Similarly thetender leaves of mango tree. The tender leaves of coconut are used for Kolam, theyyam, sastha Pooja etc. Pulses just budding is with rich proteins and edibleand sometimes available in shops. Budding coconut is often kept in bazar andthe coconut is cut and given called Pongu. However it is very costly. A needle with bud head is often used for two or three paperstitching together and present in banksetc. Later the needle would be removed and papers filed in different sections. Stapleris not convenient since the papers have to be removed later. 10 For poojas Only blossom flowers are used for Pooja and decoration. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Thatha_Patty" group.
