THE NEW CLOTHESLINES

My son purchased anew flat near Sriperambadurfor the convenience of children
education and wife’s teacher job near theplace about three years back. I found
a new type of clotheslines provided inthe flat portico. Almost same time my
daughter changed her flat at Bangalore, there too another new type of
clotheslines were provided in the portico.  Both kindled in me the desire to
have eitherone type in home.

While in Trivandrumto dry clothes and keep used clothes we had clothes drying
stands purchased from Delhi. However lengthy clothes could not bedried on it.
So using grill work provided in the portico Nylon wires were tiedand washed
clothes spread on it. We adjusted the length of clothes in such away so that it
would notdisturb the flat below.

While constructinghome in Chennai, the grill maker made a few angle rods with
fixing arrangementsand four holes in each road. The rods were fixed to the
outside wall, nylonwire run through the holes, a tidy clotheslines arrangement
was made in thesouthern side. My wife declared it was for her.

On the terrace atconvenient location two GI pipes were fitted to a height of
about 5 feet andwith a top frame having 4 holes. As done in the previous case,
nylon wires wererun so that lengthy andheavy clothes could be dried. In
addition I made two clotheslines inthe front portico that some clothes of mine
can be dried without going toterrace. But when my daughter came in car, it was
a great inconvenience to usethem.

My daughter came fora break to Chennai, my home in the last month. I expressed
my desire. She madea search, found a firm at Porur   nearChennai is producing
one type, in which each clothesline is independently lowered, raised and
fitted. We called the firm. They said a top frame work of 5 pulley fitting is
mostconvenient. I located where the same can be fitted best, the technician
cameand first fitted the pulley frame work on either side deciding the length
ofthe rod. For a set of pulley nylon quality wire was inserted through pipe of
1 cm diameter, extended from one pulley to other, a handle and stoppers was
provided in quality PVC.A frame work was fitted to wall which had fabricated
provision to hold thestopper. Similarly other four rods were provided through
pulley system.

He demonstrated howto lower the cloth line rod, and hold with stopper in the
fabricated unit. Heshowed after going up how a stopper stopped the cloth line
at pulley level. Athought out engineering design. The price of 7000-00 rupees
with three year warranty was not felt highfor the elegant appearance.

I felt for drying inner wears the back lines of the unit canbe used.

Second unit.

I was to a hardwareshop slightly distant and I asked whether clothes line with
pulley was there onthe next day. He smiledwith reply yes, only one or two
units. He took a bundled unit withpulley inside, wire, two frame works in
quality stainless steel with loops for wire andprovision in centre in quality
PVC to insert a lengthy rod. He added the technician would comewith rod, the
entire unit only 650-00. Technician charges 300-00.

I simply purchased/grabbed one unit. Evening technician came, he fittedone
pulley at one end two pulleys at another end, inserted middle stainlesssteel
pipe, run nylon wire through holes, tightened. From the middle hookthrough a
single wire it was taken to single pulley, the nylon wire takenthrough two
pulleys at other end, put two big knots in the nylon wire, and taken out to a
window typehook fitted on wall as a loop. Provided a handle to loop. To
keepdown the frame work, the wire has to be released from hook. After
puttingclothes on either side of rod, raise up, and keep it on hook.  This was
a simple engineering idea for the middleclass man. Thiswas the one in my
daughter’s flat with the exception instead of wires it wasthin pipes. A Delhi
made item with some more appearance.

After seeing the fitting my wife wondered that too wasgood.

Now one behind the other both units of clotheslines adorn portico. Though for
putting clothes it has to be lowered, no hindranceto parking of cars.

Both are good ideas of engineers, the firstone gives more elegant appearance.
My wife suggested- I have lengthy sarees, I will use first unit generally.Your
washed clothes are  smaller in size, the second unit would be more convenient
for you. Is it not??

I think these unitsmay be available in Tamilnadu major cities also.

My sister in law fromCherthala  came recently took snaps toshow  co brother, so
that at least thesecond one can be searched whether available in their area.
Her three brother inlaws have constructed new homes, but no such provision. So
probably the item may not be availablein their area.

Now the old clothesline earlier used by my wife- It is used byservant lady to
dry cleaning clothes!!!
