Q1 Is the Sun rotating? A1 Pramodya Thilakarathna February6 B.Sc (Hons) in IT from Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology(Expected 2023) Yes, the Sun does spin, orrotate. Because it is a gas, it does not rotate like a solid. It is, as all stars are, a hotball of gas made up mostly of Hydrogen. The Sun is so hot that most ofthe gas is actually plasma, the fourth state of matter. The first state is a solid andit is the coldest state of matter. This rotation was first detected by observing the motion of sunspots.TheSun actually spins faster at its equator than at its poles. The Sun rotates once every 24days at its equator, but only once every 35 near its poles. The movements of the sunspots indicate that the sun rotates once every 27days (Average is about 27 days). The Sun's rotation axis is tilted by about 7.25 degrees from the axis ofthe Earth's orbit so we see more of the Sun's northpole in September of eachyear and more of its south pole in March. The planets in our solar systemorbit around the sun, and the sun orbits around the center of the Milky Waygalaxy. We take about 225-250 million years to revolve once around the galaxy’scenter. This length of time is called a“Galactic Year” or “Cosmic Year”.Sun in orbit around Galactic Centre(Source: File:Sun in orbit aroundGalactic Centre.gif ) Q2 How long can harmful bacteria live on dry surfaces? A7 Devala ReesSatHindupractitioner and scholar of Pagan religions Hindu Brahmins, and other Hindus, can’t just chant whatever they want.Chants are carefully composed, set to certain meters, etc. Hindus, Brahmin andotherwise, chant the chants that they were taught. Most of those chants were composed in Sanskrit. The purpose isn’t, and has never been, for listeners to understand. Thewhole idea is that yes, Sanskrit chants “have magic” because Sanskrit is thelanguage of the Devas; the chants invoke Devas for specific subtle spiritualpurposes. The vastmajority of the Brahmins themselves don’t really understand the languageeither; they’re just trained in how to use it, and taught the meaning andpurpose of the specific chants. Hindus also have thousands ofspiritual, devotional, and philosophical compositions in regional languages, but these never replace Sanskrit chants. They have different purposes. Q9 How did Lord Shiva get the name Sheetikanth? A9 Sunitha ParapatlaJuly 9,2020 God Shiva is referred withmultiple names and one being Shithi_kannttaya, means one who has bruise markson his throat ( kannttamu). One mantra from Shiva's Ashtotram (108 mantras) says “ Om Shithi_kannttaya Namaha “. One day I asked my grandmother, “ Granny, how did God Shiva get bruiseson His throat. I remember you told about God Shiva consuming poison, so Histhroat became blue in colour, so did that poison cause bruises on His throat “? Granny :: no child, the poison ( halahal) caused blue colour on histhroat and thus Mahadev is called as Neelakannt, the blue throat God. But this story of bruises on Shiva'sthroat is a different story child. Now listen to the story.. In Satya yuga, many snakes werebeing killed by Eagles. Soone day, Vasuki, the King of snakes approached Lord Brahma and told the painthe snakes are undergoing and told Him to do something, or else the snakes willbecome extinct. Then Lord Brahma says “ HeyVasuki, I can understand your pain and agony, my suggestion is, please go tomount Kailash and meet God Shiva, He would resolve your problem as He is the Pashupatinath, God and protectorto all animals. “ Vasuki thanked Lord Brahma and went to mount Kailash to meet God Shiva. When Vasuki entered into mountKailash, he was surprised to see Shiv Ganas ( the attendents and devotees of Shiva), Nandi the bull and mount of GodShiva, Tiger and Lion( mount of Goddess Parvathi) and many animals residingwith unity at Kailash. He was very happy and he was sure that, God Shiva wouldhelp him. Vasuki saw God Shiva seated ontiger's skin, wearing an Elephant's hide on His body, sacred ash of thecremation grounds smeared all over His body, Many Rudraksha necklaces around His neck and His bluethroat, it too was beautiful on His camphor colored body. Seeing Shiva, Vasuki the snake was spellbound. Shiva was deep inmeditation, His eyes half closed and half opened, even though He was in deepmeditation, but Shiva had a pleasant smile on His face. Vasuki just stood in front ofShiva, just admiring Him and didnot disturb Shiva After sometime Shiva opened His eyes. Then Vasuki went near to Shiva andbent down to touch His feet and said “ Hey Mahadev, Im Vasuki, please help me and all my species, since we are getting extinct because of Eagles killing us “ Shiva says “ Vasuki my child, don't worry. You and all the snakes aresafe, I give my word, Iwill protect the snake species from Eagles.” Vasuki says “ Hey Mahadev, one small thing I want to tell, you know thatEagle is mount of Shri Vishnu, and Shri Vishnu is your beloved. “ Shiva says “ I know that Vasuki, you don't worry, I stand on my word, youstay here in Kailash”. Saying this Shiva goes into deep meditation. After few days, God Shivasummons Garuda, the Eagle and mount of Shri Vishnu to discuss about the Snakesissue. Garuda arrives at Kailash and Shiva says “ Hey Garuda, I request you andall other Eagles not to kill Snakes “. Garuda says “Sorry Mahadev, snakes are our enemies since ages and wewould kill them and make them extinct”. Mahadev gets angry on Garuda's words and again warns him saying “I have already given word toVasuki that I would protect all the snakes, saying this God Shiva took Vasukiand put the cobra snake around His neck, thus the cobra became Abharanaor ornament of Shiva”. Garuda says “ Hey Mahadev, I stand on my word, I'm not going to leave anysnake alive”. Hearing this sentence, GodShiva became very angry, He stood up and lifted to release His trishul and killGaruda. Shri Vishnu, was seeing all this through His divya_dhristi (spiritual eyes), He woke up from His Yog Nidra ( meditation) and immediately arrived on mountKailash. Seeing Shiva is about to attack Garuda, His mount, Shri Vishnu became very angry andsays “ Hey Mahadev, being attacking my devotee Garuda, you have to fight withme “! Thus God Shiva and Shri Vishnuhad a fierce battle, and since both are different forms of Para_brahman, therewas no result of the war and the battle was continuing for years. After sometime, Shri Vishnuangrily goes near God Shiva and held His throat part very tightly with His handand Vishnu’s immense strength caused bruise marks on Shiva's kannth ( throat) andShiva angrily pushes away Shri Vishnu and releases His Trishul. The trishul goes and pierces hard into Shri Vishnu's heart causing a small mark on Hisbeautiful chest, the place where Goddess Lakshmi resides. Of course nothinghappens to Shri Vishnu, as He is parabrahman. After this incident, both ShriVishnu and God Shiva come back to normalcy ( out of maya or illusion). Then Lord Brahma and all Gods arrive to Kailash and will be shocked tosee a battle between Shri Vishnu and Shiva, as they are beloved to each other. Then they realise that, thisdivine play indicates that Shiva and Shri Vishnu go to any extent to protecttheir devotees and to prove that both are equal and no one is less or higher inany aspect. Then God Shiva says “ Hey Shri Vishnu, this bruise marks on my throatwill ever remain, reminding me ever that you are my beloved “. Then Shri Vishnu says “ Hey Mahadev, the mark on my chest caused by yourtrishul will remain, and will be from now on called Srivatsa.” Srivatsa means "beloved of Sri", thegoddess Lakshmi. It is a mark on the chest of Vishnu where his consort Lakshmiresides. And It is one of the names of Shri Vishnu in the Vishnu Sahasranamam (1000 names). So this is the story of why God Shiva is called Shithi_kannttaya. Q10 Do insects feel fear in the same way we do? A10 Ken Saladin Sat Formerprofessor of histology (microscopic anatomy) Not likely. We know what brainstructures are associated with the human sense of fear, and they do not exist in insects. An alarm reaction or aversive behavior in aninsect isn’t necessarily evidence of anything we could usefully label as fear. There are kits to build toy that will back away from table edges; we wouldn’tcall the robot’s behavior “fear.” There is no more reason to call an insect’s avoidance behaviors feareither; they’re simplylittle biological stimulus-response robots.
