PILLOW PART 2

Continued from part 1

12   Types

A pillow is designed to providesupport and comfort to the body and head. There
are three main types ofpillows; bed pillows, orthopedic pillows and decorative
pillows, with someoverlapping of use between these. The appropriate size of a
bed pillow dependson the size of the bed. In general a twin bed goes best with
a standard pillowwhile for queen and king sized beds larger pillows are
recommended.

13          Size

The classic bed pillow shape isusually a square or rectangle. In the US, they
are common in these three sizes(in inches): Standard (20×26 inches), Queen
(20×30 inches), and King (20×36inches). In the US, a less common size is Jumbo
(20×28 inches), which is largerthan the Standard Size but smaller than the
Queen Size.

Pillows are generally covered with a removable pillow case, whichfacilitates
laundering.

14          Classification

Apart from the colour and fromthe material of which they are made, pillowcases
are described by three characteristics:

1     Size        2            Features              3     Opening /closing

Size conforms to the pillow thecase is to contain. They are typically described
as: Standard, Square,  Queen and King.

The main distinguishing featureis whether the pillow case is plain or with a
valance around the edge. In theformer case this is described as 'plain style'
and in the latter as 'Oxfordstyle'. "Oxford ... has a 5cm-10cm valance round
all four sides. With ahemstitched or corded decoration around the inner   edge
of the valance."

The opening/closure of pillowcases ranges from the straightforward "bag style"
common in theUnited States to the "housewife style" more common in Europe, with
a pocket inside the open end tofully contain the pillow.

"Housewife is ...essentially a bag, with a flap in the open end to tuck the
pillowcase behind tokeep it in..."Other methods of closure are ties or
buttons/buttonholes.

Body pillows are as long as a full adult body, providing support to the head and
neck at the top and to the knees and legslower down. This type of pillow can be
especially useful in providing supportfor those who sleep on their sides and
for pregnant women. Size is 40×140 cm.(See also: Dutch wife)

Orthopedic-Neck pillows support the neck by providing a deep area forthe head
to rest and a supportive area to keep the neck in alignment with thespine while
sleeping. These can also be known as cervical pillows.

Travel pillows provide support for the neck in a sittingposition. Their"U"
shape fits around the back of the neck and keeps the head fromslipping into an
uncomfortable and possibly harmful position during sleep. However, U-shaped
pillows can sometimes force the head forward, creating neckstiffness.

Donut pillows are firm pillows shaped like a torus, with aspace in the middle
to alleviate pressure on the tailbone area while sitting. These pillows are
used primarily byindividuals who have suffered an injury to the tailbone area,
or whosuffer pain from hemorrhoids or another ailment of the colon.

Lumbar pillows are designed to support the inward curve ofthe lower back,
filling the space created between the lower back and the backof the chair when
in a sitting position. These pillows are generally used to supportthe lower
back while driving or sitting, such as in an office chair. Orthopedic pillows
are similar tomemory foam pillows.

15          Decorative

Decorative pillows serve a dual purpose. They often have fancy covermaterial
which serves to decorate the room where they are found. Sincedecorative
textiles are commonly 54 inches in width, many decorative pillowsfinish about
17x17 inches. (54/3 = 18 less seam allowance)

When used to decorate a fullymade up bed, decorative pillows are likely thrown
aside at bedtime, since theyare not covered with a washable pillow case, thus,
while found on the bed, theyare primarily there for decoration, hence they fall
under this category. Thesepillows may be custom made, as well as made by
freelancers.

15a        Decorative pillows

Decorative pillows are also found on furnishings in more public parts ofthe
home, such as sofas, chairs and window seats. Here, their common use mayoverlap
both orthopedic and bed pillows. For example, unless a person has
someparticular medical condition, they will likely use a handy decorative
pillowfor lumbar support, as needed, while seated on a sofa. Likewise, for
theoccasional nap, decorative pillows are handy for supporting the head or
neck, even though they may not be covered with a pillow case, as are bed
pillows.

There are five common synonyms for decorative pillows which aredescriptive of
their use in the home. "Accent" pillowsemphasize or accent some other part of
the home decor. The terms "sofapillow" and "couch pillow" refer to the place
these decorativepillows are likely found. The terms "toss pillow" and
"throwpillow" may refer to the way they generally arrive in their places.

16          Novelty pillows-

Novelty pillows are shaped like humorous objects (a banana, tweety bird, ahuman
leg, a chainsaw, a dill pickle, a former president) and are meant tobrighten up
and add humour to a room or lounge area.

Tent-flap pillows are placed at the front of a stack of pillowsdecorating a
bed. "Tent flap" is the term used to describe a separateflap of fabric that is
attached at the top of the pillow and folds down overthe face. The tent flap
can be loose or tacked down; if the flap is loose adecorative tassel or bead is
usually used to weigh the flap down so it hangsproperly.

Floor pillows are another subset of decorative pillows. These pillows often
finish26×26 inches (one half of the width of the textile, less seam allowance)

17          fire stop pillows

Firestop pillows are technical firestop products, used in passive
fireprotection.

18          Husband Pillow

A husband pillow is a large, high-backed pillow with two"arms." It is used to
prop the user upright while in bed oron the floor, as for readingor watching
television. Because of this common use, a husband pillow isalso called a
reading pillow.

19          Chinese rock pillows

They played an important role in ancient China. Made from jade, they
werebelieved to translate the energy from the stone to the human brain.

Originating in the Ming dynasty, this piece of material was trusted to
cureheadaches or depression, or simply to better the intelligence of those who
use it. Itwas more common among royalty because it was expensive and rare.
Families oftenmarried off children based on the quality and intricacy of these
pillows.

Today, rock pillows are stillcommonly used during the hot summer months in
China.

20- Thalayana manthram

it is a common usage when husbandagrees to wife’s points. Sometimes a husband
may tell something in the day, after talks with wife may change and tell new
version- next day morning.

21- Thalayana ati

This was a game when I wasstudying in middle school. Two boys  would sit on
lower tree branches and blow each other with small pillows. One handin pillow
and another in tree branch.  The one who   drops the pillowwhile blowing lose
the game. I am not sure such games are there now in schools. We iyers could not
get totree branches and it was   generallyothers used to play the game.

22. Bedspread with pillow covers

Now we get ready made pillowcover along with bed spread. Mostly we may be
having pillow of the size suitedto pillow cover.  In homes thesuitability is
moderately seen. Pillow is not used after 4-5 years. Howeverduring covid19, now
we have disposal problem, even to burn.  We wash pillow cover and change once
in 10 days due to covid 19. Bed spread and bed sheet also.
