AALILA THALI CHARTHI Dear friends, Recentadvertisement about eyebrow semiliquid pencils costing above Rs 300-00 and costlykajal I thought of writing about the eye and related items. Really kids andyoung women using eyebrow pencil to colour eyebrow and extend eyelids looksbeautiful. In arts like Kathakali etc. artists apply kajal to the eyes. Whilewriting about the eyes of elephants itself I was thinking of writing on EYES. I haveread elsewhere, the vision of animals like cow, cat. Dog etc. are not similarto the one by humans. They may see with different colouring, different sizes, comparing with humans. Ouractual size and colours are not seen exactly the same manner by cows. Eye defects are also there with animals, though rare. I have read about one-eyed horses. Someanimals do not like staring on their eyes. Sometimes staring on animals like elephantscan create a fear also in us. During morning walk I have seen many dogs closingtheir eyes on seeing walking people. Thevision of birds is guided through smells also. However their vision is morecomparing to their SIZE. Amonghumans especially young girls and young women do not look straight to male’seyes, probably due to shyness. Sometimes young men too. One should not stare atgrown up girls and young women. Irecollect about a young college lecturer who was taking English classes for me.He used to wear pure white cotton shirt and dhoti washed and ironed every day. One dayhe was taking class. He could not concentrate. After about fifteen minutes, he got down from platform to a backbencherand told in raised voice - why do you stare at my eyes. I am trying to deviate, still you are staringat me. Deviate your eyes to the right side. You can see butterflies. I will notquestion you. Theentire hall filled with laugh. Infantsdevelop vision or clear vision only after six months, I have read elsewhere.Eye defect if any can be felt after that only in infants. Eye careis most important. It’s importance could not be told in worlds. The eyes have aspecial capability. It is called REFLEX ACTION. If any danger comes to theeyes, on account of it eye closes or moves your face bend as required andavoids it. The nerves to brain from eyes are activated three times quickly thanfrom other organs. The eyegrowth is very less comparing to body growth. I have read elsewhere, eye doesnot grow from birth. The statement does not appear fully correct. Let me go more with eye Sincerely, GopalaKrishnan 21-12-2012 Re written with addition and edition and reposted on24-4-2021. R. Gopala Krishnan 1. The eye protectors The foureye protectors are the eyebrow, eyelashes, eyelids and TEARS. Tears is eye protector. 2. Sayings related with eyes. 2 a. Pottakkannatae mavelaeru(The blind man throwing stones at mango tree and mangoes fall down) Thesaying is used to mention of incidental occurrence fulfilling an action. Thestones threw by the blind person just like that hit the mangoes and fell down 2b. Ponnin soochi anengilum kannil kondal vedanikkum (If at all it is a needle made of gold, if hit on eye, it would create pain) If at alla word is used by closer ones or distant ones, if it is wounding, the words are wounding irrespectiveof the person. 2c. Kurukkantae kannu kozhi kootil thannae. (The jackal aims at chicken coop) A jackalwhether wander anywhere near a home having hen and chickens, its aim is alwayson the chickens, whether it will come down to catch. Youngstermales or females coming for talks to a house, aims at youngsters and notelders. It need not be lovers alone. They will have courtesy talks with elders, eyes searching foryoungsters. If youngsters are not there, they will tell some reasonand go off. 2d.Kannuantayal pora, kananam (Eyes should be alert) Whenconcentration is not there, what happens in front of eyes will not be seen-Information will not be send through nerves. Onecommon thing is our spectacles. Keeping it somewhere, standing near it, we willbe searching. Mind is concentrating in thinking about the misplacement ofspectacles. Many times keeping my spectacles OVER THE KEY BOARD, I havesearched throughout the room. We are seeing Laptop, not spectacles. In fact spectaclesis an eye protector also. After eye operation one has to wear black glass. Forsome wearing plane glass if men, add to their mannerism, if women, add to theirbeauty. 3. Perfectvision. Though with one eye vision could be there, for aclear three dimensional view, both eyes should have vision. Something similarto hearing with one ear. With a single ear hearing will not be proper. This wecan attempt closing one of the ears and observe the difference of hearing. But regarding eye, the brain stores theinformation, just by closing one eye this cannot be felt immediately like theear. Those lost one eye vision in later period due to some disease would seethings with three dimensions. While blind man is replaced by the eyes of a donor, only one eye is replaced. Another eye is fitted to another blind man. Theirvision need not be 100% perfect. 4. Kanninu kannai jnan valarthi (I brought upabove the level of precious eye) The eyeis precious organ of the human body. A child is brought up with that muchaffection and care by the parents. 5. Kannil enna ozhichhu kkatthirikkal This is asaying in Malayalam used to mean impatiently waiting for a person. 5b. Kannirikkae Krishnamoni kontupoyi (Lostbefore alerts) Just likethe magicians, there are certain clever people who could remove things in frontof others without their knowledge though they are sitting with open eye. 6. Kannezhuthal Small kidsare essentially applied with kanmashi (kohi) after bath. It gives beauty to theeyes. As children grow up, application of kohi is done mostly to girls. Manywomen give up kanneezhuthal as they grow up older or at the age of havingmarriageable children. But some women still continue. InKathakali kaneezhthal is important to male and female characters. Duringthe time of marriage in our community the bridegroom is also applied withkanmazhi, but however, most do not like it now a day. A girlgets beauty-applying sindur in forehead and applies kohi in the eyes afterbath. Some apply for a short more to thesides like a thick pencil line. It is called neetti ezhthal. Really it looks beautiful for some eyes. For some eyes will be verybeautiful and impressive. About twodecades back there was a successful Malayalam film released by name Kannezhuthi pottum thottuacted by Manju varrier and Bijumenon. 7. Purikam ezhuthal (Making dark they eyebrow) Someapply black colour to the eyebrow. A soft black pencil is available now for it.Even males too sometimes use eyebrow pencil which would turn eyebrows blackcovering white hairs or hiding no hair area. There aresome people make blackish their mustache and eyebrow, but not dying hair. Howevereyebrow pencil has an important place in Lady’s dressing table. 8) Carving eye and eyebrows Duringvenna charthal (Applying butter), chandanam charthal (applying sandal paste) onLord Krishna idols, the priests remove the application at eyes. Nose, mouth etc.to identify the body parts. Thesefine carvings by experts give beauty to the idol and make it appear live. One can see more people crowding to thetemple to see the deity on such adorned days. Prominent displays of suchadorning done are kept before the temple. Many devotees pray for such adorningto God for full filling things. 9. Thirivathira and Kannezhthal On theoccasion of Thiruvathira, married Hindu women in Kerala compulsorily take bathearly morning and apply kohi. In the afternoon the play called Thirvathira isconducted in homes by youngsters. It is compulsory kohi has to be appliedduring the play. 10. Eye in legends and literatures. In thelegend of Srikrishna, during rasaleela as well as other occasions when thegopikas come to sree Krishna hearing the flute, they made their beauty theireyes with kohi. It was in Dwaparayuga. In theMaha bharatha, Dritharashtra was born blind. But Gandhari on marrying him, tiedher eyes with a cloth. She has removed the cloth once, to transfer herthapobala to Duryodhana, looking at him in the born form after taking bath. However sage Narada played a trick, asking him to cover the middle area thoughGandhari was his mother. Hence on looking at him, thapobalam could not betransferred to the loin area. 11. Games associated with eye. Uriyadiduring Krishna jayanthi is performed tying the eye of the player with acloth. There wasa children game called “Kannu pothhi kali” in my boyhood days. A cloth would close one player’s eyes byanother and other participants would hide somewhere. This player’s eye will beopened after taking the player somewhere. She/he has to find out the otherparticipants with in a time. Or else he /she is defeated. Now with note book, children may seesuch games in it. 12. Kannu peduka ( Evil eye) Somepeople’s eye falling on an object may have detrimental effect. This is specialwith respect to new homes etc. As a remedy for evil eye kolam is erected beforenew constructions.
