Q1         Why doesn't the Earth's surfacecollapse after oil and gas are
extracted en masse from under the ground?

A1          Thalbert McGinness April17 Proud member of the Oil Field Trash
Association.

There are no giant empty spaces left after pumping out the oil fordecades.
Unlike Carlsbad caverns, the pores containing oil in the reservoirsare, at
best, maybe an inch across at the largest and most closer to an eighthor less
at that. Go out on a cut bank alongside the highway somewhere.

Examine the rock. Somewhere inthere should be a porous formation if for no
other reason than just weathering. At the same time the rock still holds it
strengthand shape. The term is well consolidated or crystallized according to
the rocktype. In either case thepores are empty so why hasn't the wall
collapsed?

Check out the definition of rock: a naturally occurring solid aggregateof
minerals or mineraloids. Notethe word ‘solid’. That means it will stand as a
unit unless some superior forceacts on it even with empty pores.

Now lets consider the North Sea; specifically the Ekofisk field. Thereservoir
is a high porosity chalk and has less vertical support than a normalsand or
carbonate and it has experienced subsidence.

Surface subsidence was a majorissue at Ekofisk. By 1984, the seabed had
subsided approximately 10 ft,prompting a major project to jack up the offshore
platforms.

A major field study in 1992 concluded that using water-injection
pressuremaintenance to arrest the reservoir pressure decline could minimize
futureseabed subsidence. Voidagereplacement was achieved in 1993. Additional
laboratory studiesfound that water injection had induced shear in the chalk.
Shear failure andwater-weakening of the rock matrix causes additional
deformation of the chalk, even under conditions of constant or decreasing stress
levels. Despite the use ofvoidage-replacement water flooding, seabed subsidence
continued until 1998,when the subsidence rates slowed dramatically because the
water-weakeningeffect was expended and the reservoir pressure had increased.

EDIT: I tried to keep the answer simple but it appears to have causedmore
confusion. Oilreservoirs have multiple drive mechanisms. Pressure from
overburden, gasexpansion, water drive from below are the primary types. With
any ofthese and a competent rock, the results are the same. Voids are left,
sometimesfilled with gas, pressure is reduced allowing encroachment by water
from below- just the normal results of physics at work. The net result remains.
No collapsing of the reservoir.

Q3         Do you fold your clothes as soon as youfinish your laundry?

A3          Bhuvana Rameshwar Sat marriedfor three decades

I do the washing of clothes once in ten days. Then iron and fold too.

Earlier we had a maid but we stopped her after our son and family wentabroad.
So now it is just two of us. Before corona and even during corona lock-down
breaks we travelled a lot. Hence not having a maid was a better option.

So it is washing day once in tendays, that's three in a month. Sometimes I have
four if there are more clothes like after a tour orextra blankets or curtains,
tablecloth etc.

I inform my husband also anddecide the day as he helps me. We start this work
after breakfast. I soak the clothes first manuallywith some rub, scrub if
needed. Then washing, rinsing and drying in themachine.

After spinning the clothes are still damp as most of our clothes arecotton. So
my husband dries them on hangers. After this we have a good tea withsome snacks
and rest. Tea is made by my husband as a norm on washing days, asI'm tired.

When almost done ( but before toodry) I pull them out and iron them . I do most
of the ironing as I am quitefast. My husband does theeasy ones like towels,
blankets etc. Then we leave them out for a day to drycompletely in one our
rooms, before placing them in their respective shelves.

So washing day is a big time pass for us. I also have easy cooking onthese days
like a mixed rice or a veg pilau. Of course we keep the TV on forcompany as we
wash and iron the clothes .Stay safe everybody.

My note- Travel is lesser, soiling of cloths less. So clothes used for wearing
outside trips- is done once a fortnight. Washing is done by me for my
clothes.Iron once in a month. Bedsheet, bedspread, pillow covers etc. are
washed everyweek, adding Dettol during washing. My wife washes her clothes. We
have erectednew type clothesline in portico. Clothes are dried putting over
them.

Q4         Does sunlight have morethan 7 colours?

A4   2 Answers

1st answer- Tony Coles, worked atDunlop (1979-1987)Answered 13m ago

It depends how you think of it.The colours are red, orange, yellow, green blue,
indigo, violet. Thats 7 colours.

Outside of these are invisible forms of radiation ultra violet, infrared,
radio, microwaves, and gamma rays. The whole thing is regarded as
ElectroMagnetic Radiation.

2nd answer- Ian Williams, studied Electrical Engineeringat Imperial College,
University of London (1971) Answered 2m ago

Does sunlight have more than 7colours?

Sunlight has an infinite number of colours.

The one’s with names are justthose we’ve bothered to give names to. And then
there’s all the “colours” offeach end of the visible spectrum.

Q5         When did people startedusing fossil foil?

A5          It’simpossible to say for sure, but we know that some people in
Asia were using natural gas manycenturies back…… which they obtained by putting
bamboo canes, hollowed out, buried vertically in the ground where natural gas
was seepingout. The gas would flowinto the cane in large enough amounts to burn
steadily at the upper end.

And there’s no doubt in my mindthat some people inprehistorical times
discovered that coal is a very satisfactory fuel, because there are coal
outcroppings in many places in the world. Some lumps ofcoal would have gotten
into campfires by accident, for sure.

But I don’t have any evidence to the effect that such coal was used on aregular
basis in campfires. On the other hand, an absence ofevidence is not evidence of
absence, lol.

2ndanswer- Dan Gall, worked at Canadian Armed Forces (1972-1997)Answered Sat

When they discovered oil leakingfrom the ground burned, and then they
discovered this black rock (coal) thatburned as well.

3rdanswer- Salvatore Barrera Answered Sat

As a sealant for their ancientwater-craft several millennia ago and as a
combustible fuel for lighting, since oil was discovered by EdwinDrake of
Pennsylvania in 1859.

Q6         What are some lesserknown/interesting stories in Mahabharata?

A6          MahalakshmiApril 17 BOSS (Bachelor of Social Service)

Mahabharata story itself is likeour life. The five Pandavasare like our five
senses.

The hundred Kauravas are our likeour bad qualities.

Karna is like our wish.Karna isborn with Pandavas, but associated him with
Kauravas.Similarly, our wish is born with our 5 senses.

For example, you wish to eat afood because it ''smells'' good. You wish to visit
Switzerland because you''saw'' it's pictures online.

6.But, in case if you failed to control your wish means, it will become
greedwhich is a bad quality.

7. Similarly, the Pandavas failedto convince/control Karna, or else, most
probably he would have not associated himselfwith Kauravas.

Q7         What was the best hiddenbonus you found in your home after living
there for years?

A7          SuzanneM Osborne Fri

After living in my house 6 years, for whatever reason, one evening as I was
walking through the hallway I paused right outside mybedroom door. I'm just
standing there staring at a light switch. There's no reason for a switch to be
there. The hall light has a switch outsidethe bathroom door. The bedroom light
switch is on the inside wall. So I flip it. Some genius, and that'smeant
sincerely, wired the kitchen light to dual switches.

I asked myself how many times thatother person, like myself, musthave gotten
ready for bed only to realize they'd left the kitchen light on.And then fixed
the problem. Bless them, it's very handy!

My note- Innew homes we have light and fan switches in two places, one close to
bed sothat we can lay on cot and operate.

Similarly outside lights which can be operated from inside and outside.

Calling bell switches near compound gate and entrance and bells in bedroom and
hall.

Internal staircase light at topand bottom.

But this is notthought by many electricians. If a lightcan be switched from bed
room or hall, one can make sure a 2nd time whether LPG stove is on or anyother
switch is on. A masterswitch is not feasible in new homes.  A very good idea.

Q8         why Kouslaya supraja Rama…is played in Tirupathi Venkitachalapathi
temple?

A8   Thatis because Swamy SriVenkatachalapathi at Tirumala, like Sri Rama, is
also a form of Sri Mahavishnu.Therein lies the congruence between the two.

Saints-devoteeslike Sri Annamacharya, Sri Purandaradasa, the Azhwars, etc.,
have eulogised the Lord asSri Mahavishnu, and His spouse, Sri Alarmel Mangamma
(Sri Padmavathi Devi) asSri Mahalakshmi. SriAnnamacharya, especially, has
coalesced all the forms of Sri Mahavishnu intoSri Venkateshwara.

So, it is not out of place thatPrativadibhayankaram Annangaracharya — the
composer — has included the “Kausalyāsuprajā…” from the Ramayana as thefirst
verse in his Venkateshwara-suprabhata.

Q11       How are needles made? Is the centerdrilled-out? Is liquid metal
shaped with that tiny hole in the center?

A11        Vivienne Marcus UpdatedSat got a medical degree once.

The answer is exactly the sameas how they make wire. Metals are ductile: a
property which means you can pullthem into wire.

When you make wire, you start off with a short, wide cylinder of metal, a
billet. Then you pullit through an aperture known as a die or a draw plate
which is conical and ever so slightlynarrower than the bit you started with.
Then you end up with a cylinder whichis a bit longer and a bit narrower than
you started with.

Then you repeat the process. The more you do this, the longer and thinner your
piece becomes, until it’s no longer a short fat cylinder but a very long and
thin one: at thispoint, it becomes wire.

The number of draws determinesthe gauge of the wire, which is why
higher-gaugewire is narrower: it’s been through more dies.

is an accepted series of dies, which produce wire of specified thickness, known
as the Standard Wire Gauge. (Edit: my thanks to Nina Lanyon for pointingout
that the SWG is an outmoded method of sizing wire and that metricmeasurements
are now the norm.)

The cool part is that, if thebillet you start with is hollow instead of solid,
you end up with wire whichhas a hole down through the middle. You draw it to
your desired calibre, cut it to length, sharpen oneend, and there’s your needle.

Medical needles are also sizedaccording to the Standard Wire Gauge, although
metric sizes are printed on the packaging. Yes.

Q12       it is possible to make tree's growth at afaster rate.

A12        If you want a tree toreally grow and thrive, you should dig about
three feet out from the trunk during planting.

Your tree root systems should besurrounded by good soil, and in the beginning,
mulch to encourage growth.

You can also use a fertilizer with root stimulator to help.

Your tree root systems should be surrounded by good soil, and in thebeginning,
mulch to encourage growth.

You can also use a fertilizer with root stimulator to help.

If your tree roots are notpulling in water, it may be because the soil around
the tree is hard or poorquality.

Another way of helping a tree to grow taller is to use fertilizer.

There are fertilizers made specifically for trees, but you can use mostany
store bought or organic fertilizer.

Water your trees on a regularbasis, especially during dry spells.
