Q1 Why do some people covertheir phones with tempered glass? Is it to prevent their screen from shatteringto pieces? A1 Dave Haynie UpdatedDecember 18, 2018 Hardware Systems Engineer (Rajant + Commodore-Amiga + 20years in startups) Nope. Most phones have some kindof highly engineered glass for the screen these days. In the past, this was something like Gorilla Glass 2,going way back, such as used on this Samsung Galaxy S3. It was pretty scratchresistant. But, being so hard, it was prone to shattering. Corning then delivered GorillaGlass 3, which was said to be40% more scratch resistant than GG2. However, if anything, it was even moreshatter prone. That should not be a suprise — hardness and brittleness arepretty much going to track each other. Now, back in those days, I neverdid have a shattered screen. Inever used any kind of screen protector. And my phone lived just dandy in mypocket, next to keys, coins, random small electronic components, cool lookingpebbles, anything else I might happen to pick up and pocket. So nearly three years ago, Iupgraded to the nearlyindestructible LG V10. This bad boy has a rubberized plastic back cover, stainless steel rails on the side, MIL-810G drop certification, and thenew-at-the-time Gorilla Glass 4. So this goes into my pocket, and … what the,who the, how the… within a week, fine scratches on the screen. Not many, notsevere, but there they were. That was damn near impossible with the olderphones. What happened here is thatCorning decided to back off on the brittleness of the glass in order to prevent smashing or shattering. Gorilla Glass 4 isreally resistant to those all-screen smashes you see, say, on 25% of alliPhones. Not impossible, but it’s a much more resilient glass. It’s just, inorder to deliver that, they had to make it more “scratchy”. And thus, my 9H glass screenprotectors. My current one has a few hairline cracks in it. That’s what I expect, because the screen protectors are prettymuch all about hardness. They crack or shatter, they don’t scratch. They offerprotection against scratching, primarily, though of course, a person’smotivation for using one can be any belief they choose. The main actual value, however, is scratch protection. So you may get a little helpagainst shattering. The simplest way to shatter glass is to hit it very sharply at a single point with a blow. So the protectorwill blunt such a strike just a bit, but if the impact is enough to break thescreen due to its own brittleness, it’s not going to be much help My note- I am provided my Galaxy Samsung phone with a glass/fibre over glass front in additionwith extra payment. Sometimes I feelmy touch do not reach the glass touch screen. Q2 How do you deal with asister-in-law you don't like? A2 Bhuvana Rameshwar FormerTeacher, Fri Be keeping things a bareminimum. Just enough to keep things going, but not more togive her an advantage. My sil is close to my husband butisn't very friendly with me. Itried my best as I needed her when I was a new bride, she then an Engg.college student. It somehow just wouldn't work out with her. Wehave a difference of only four years, she being younger. She is pretty mean toother brothers ‘wives but I somehow never been there as I give her a royal slipor keep my safe distance. Ofcourse she does get a bit of my mind whenever needed without involving myhusband. But being a sister of five brothers she is quite pamperedby her brothers, much to her advantage. She also lost her husband after 14years of marriage to a road accident. She calls my husband often and meonly formally for some birthday wishes or a function at home. She comes home and stays with us but would not make amistake of inviting me over for a coffee, leave alone a meal. The excuse is that she is a busy working women, who doesn't cook much. But she comes to our place often. I don’t like her taking advantage of me. But when she comes home I treather well. For me a guestshould be treated well. So I prepare a feast for her and family. Sheis invited to all our get togethers too just like others. She gets all due respect she deserves. I feel at least that way she willfeel guilty. ***We can’t change people. They should change themselves. But I do keep it a bare minimum compared to what it would have been with aloving, friendly sister in law. My note- I enjoyed the realstatement by the madam marked *** Q3 As a doctor or nurse, what dark side have you witnessed from patients? A3 William Battle Studiedat Mississippi College18h ago Unrealistic expectations. As ananesthesiologist too many people feel that surgical procedures should be freeof any discomfort at any time. And that we can provide a pill or other medication that makes things ok.That is simply not true. Patientshave a responsibility to follow instructions and expect limitations some ofwhich will be permanent. They are also responsible for the success of their procedure in whateverrehabilitation is needed. Just seeing someone twice a week does not do it. You have to be motivated to getbetter even if it hurts. Q4 Would Rami Sivan performfunerary rites for a Hindu opting for a green burial instead of cremation? Whenthe time comes, how would I find a Hindu priest who would do the same? A4 Rami Sivan Priest,Dharma teacher, counsellor, Gov. Advisor (1998–present)Fri There are options in Shastra for both burial and cremation as well as water and sky burial (leaving the body for vultures etc) - allthe options are available - it depends on what the by-laws are in your place ofresidence. Most Hindu priests are only skilled in their own narrow field of studyand do not have a broad knowledge or ability to implement options from left-field.Flexibility and adaptability is a rare quality in most Hindupriests. The other complicating factor is in India there is adivision between funeral priests and the ‘sacramental” priests -usually their functions remain separate and they do not mix orsocialise with each other. In foreign countries some Hindu priests do both activities out ofnecessity but most do not do funerals. My note- In Chennai the priestswho perform marriages and such auspicious functions, accept our requirement for funeral, direct another whomhe knows doing such things. Adhoc chargingis done by the priest who do auspicious things. He pay a good amount to otherpriest, keeping his mediation amount. In Kerala as my information go, priests perform bothauspicious things in general. Those who are not willing would giveindirect answers like another function accepted, going to his brother in lawand ticket already booked, son’sinterview he has to follow etc. Normally the vadhyar’s wifeattend his phone. She gives istructions how to talckle the matter. Q5 Where does the Caspian Sea drain? A5 Steven Haddock Studiedat York University (Canada)May 5 It doesn’t. The Caspian Sea isin a basin that sits 28 meters below sea level. Rivers flow into it, but don’t flow out.Technically, it’s a “lake” but it’s also salt water. It’s cut off from thenearest body of sea level water, the Black Sea, by a mountain range. Q6 What are some of the mostmind-blowing facts about Indian culture? A6 Ravishankar Nagarajan Livesin Hyderabad, Telangana, India Thu In the Indian marriages of the distant past, below is how the Mangalsutra looked like.Thread is overlaid with turmeric powder and is tied to aTurmeric ( Haldi )stick. You can see this in most temples. But why so much Turmericeverywhere? There is deep-rooted science behind this tradition. Turmeric has an active component called “ Curcumin”, which isanti-inflammatory, effectiveanti-oxidant and had the potential to prevent Cancer, Heart diseases andAlzheimer's.. So, when a woman wore this Mangal sutra day in and day out , the turmeric thread as well asthe turmeric stick, were constantly in contact to her Breasts. This consistent exposure to turmeric, helped women prevent Breast Cancer, which isnow on the rise, because a lot of women either do not wear the Mangal sutra oropt for the chain based Mangal sutra. And not just breast Cancer, women in the olden days were free from mostheart related ailments and lived healthily for longer periods, thanks to theirhabit of wearing this thread based Mangal sutra everyday. >From the past year, I’msanitizing all the produce and the items that come from >outside, using turmericwater, which I think is one of the major reasons why >anyone in my familyhaven't contracted COVID, as of yet.( Of course we strictly >follow the masking and social distancingprocedures as well ).Turmeric is a >boon to humanity and the Indian culturealways promoted it’s usage in all the >family occasions. Q7 What are lightweight materials for the storage ofoxygen and hydrogen? A7 Ritwik Sunny, formerCustomer Support Executive at Ashok LeylandAnswered 11m ago Hydrogen storage materials (HSMs) are usually intermetallics containing intersticeswith a suitable binding energy for hydrogen which allows its absorption ordesorption near room temperature and atmospheric pressure. Q8 What caused the suddendownfall of the Indus Valley civilization? Why hasn't its script beendeciphered yet? A8 Matt Riggsby·MAArchaeological Studies, Boston University Wed Current thinking is that the IVC collapsed because of a change inclimate. It declined and collapsed around the time of a relatively dryperiod. Early civilizations, which perch on a very narrow margin of surplusagricultural production, are quite vulnerable to such changes. When farmers have problemsfeeding even themselves, they can’t feed anybody else and the wholesystem falls apart. The script hasn’t beendeciphered because we don’t know nearly enough. There’s a substantial number (in the hundreds) of symbols which are used in veryshort (no known examples with more than 25 characters, IIRC, and most are muchshorter) texts, whichsuggests a syllabic or ideographic script, but we don’t know the language,we don’t have a good association between script and specific use contexts, andwe aren’t fortunate enough to have a Rosetta stone for the script. In short, we’ve got a set ofsymbols but little idea what to do with them. Consequently, if thenature of the data doesn’t change, we may never decode the IVC script. Ajay Kumar Krishnan Lives in South IndiaSat Q9 If South India has thehighest density of doctors, then why aren't they moving to Northern states toimprove healthcare? Can the Indian government force them to move to NorthIndia? A9 South Indian doctorsdon't know proper Hindi. North Indian patients don't know any other languageapart from Hindi. So to avoid teasing and getting ragged, south Indian doctorsdon't move North. No government can force a doctor to move North. My note- If there is an all India service for doctors with Governmentof India Hospitals in all states , doctors can be transferred. IAS IPS officers from other states speak 70% Malayalam in Kerala and70% Tamil in Tamilnadu. Q10 Is it right that allmarried couples should postpone pregnancy and childbirth until the pandemic isfinally over? A10 Ratnamala Kamath M'comfrom Karnatak University, Dharwad (Graduated 1988) Fri That depends on the couple. But it would be a sane thing to postponepregnancy and childbirth until the worst of the pandemic is over. Why? Because visiting hospitals and doctors for checkup and consultations duringthis pandemic is very risky. Children can be a ray of hope in this gloomy times, but you will be putting bothyourself and your newborn kid at risk when you need to visit thedoctor for child checkups and vaccination. Also employing household helpat this time is risky and it willbe difficult for a new mother to handle household chores plus baby withouthelp. You will not be able to fullyenjoy your motherhood amidst theworry of keeping your newborn and your family safe during this pandemic. Newborns are prone to fallingsick sometimes and every timeyour child falls sick you will be worried sick thinking kahin yeh woh to nahin?Neither can you afford to be sick with this pandemic and a newborn to take careof. So I personally feel postponing childbirth until the pandemic is overwould be the sensible thing to do. All the above QA are based onQuora digest on 16-05 - 2021.
