51CHANTING

Chanting God's names willsave the soul

Thesimplest, easiest and most effective remedy, advocated by saints and
prescribedin the scriptures, to ensure that all the consequences of the
mistakes and sinsthat we commit may be unintentionally and unknowingly - can be
effaced, in thepresent age, where want of time is a major factor in resorting
to the religiousexercises is to chant the names of God.

Holy texts cite examples of howmen despite misdeeds had escaped punishment by
remembering God and uttering Hisnames just once, at the time when they are
about to die.

It may not be possible foreveryone to go through the rigid formula of observing
severe austerities, conducting penance or undertaking deepstudy of texts or
even visiting temples. To them, the advice is to utter God'sname with faith and
all his faults will be condoned.

Thisshould not immediately make a happy-go-lucky person conclude that he
can"enjoy" and lead a life of licentiousness and then seek to atone forall his
sins by adopting this method.

Whatever is easy need not becheap. There is no guarantee that when he is in the
throes of death, his mentalfaculties will be alert and he can call the
Almighty. On the other hand, thatis the crucial time when he may even be able
to think or see, but may not beable to say one word.

To recite God's name should hence arise out ofone's constant practise in
earlier days and one should have taken to the pathof devotion.

God'snames are not mere empty words, but contain the potency to clear all the
dirtwithin. They are compared to the tiny matchsticks capable of incinerating
ahuge pile of rubbish kept accumulated.

Also, in chanting, the names, should not betested for their validity. No one
will be foolish to analysechemically the medicine that is purchased on the
doctor's advice, to findout their ingredients. What the physician prescribes is
taken with the hopethat it will cure us.

The manner in which Draupadi wassaved by her stirring appeal to "Govinda" isan
example often cited to refer to the significance of chanting God's name.

Likewise, Bhagavatham mentionsthe Ajamila episode to prove how God is merciful
evento the worst sinner. In his discourse, Sri S. Jayarama Sarma said this
pious man, who by a quirkof fate, fell a victim to lust, when about to breathe
his last called his lastchild, named after the Lord, and even this act brought
him a lease of life.

52 MUHURTHAMS

The Muhurtham is alsofamiliar as Lagnam’. The eminent Panchang Scholars
provides  or suggestMuhurtham for any specific occasion basing on the name/
star(Nakshatram) etc. Some of the eminent Muhurthams of the running year are

53 Braahmi

The time 90 minutes prior to sunrise is called Braahmi. This time is good for
academics, purohits and the time where in the later hours, the night the last 48
mins. (2ghadi) is called Braahmi. 'Braahmi'means Saraswathi, the Goddess of
intellect. The above specified time is auspicious for gaining and sustaining
intelligenceand knowledge, owing to which it is called Braahmi.

It is during Braahmi that Sun god spreads his rays justas a peacock spreading
its feathers. He starts spreading his light andenergy throughout the world. The
light rays from the Galaxies influence thehuman brain. The nascent sun spreads
thousand arms in the form of rays acrossthe sky, which emit light-blue devine
rays. These rays bring to life the cellsand the brain. Lord Surya or the sun
godis also the god of life. Ifthe man can synchronise his senses with these
rays during this hour he will beempowered with unchallengeable energy. This
observation was endorsed by sages.

This is thetime when the life under the sun still remains in deep sleep
supported by thetranquil and pleasant environment, the sages and munis spread
the power ofpenance, which comes out in the form of high powered electrical and
magneticcharge, for the upliftment of the living creatures on the earth. If one
keep awake during thesehours, it is possible to benefit from this charge.

The Western pandits have this to say:Tyndall teaches that every mechanical
action on face of the earth, everymanifestation on power, organic or inorganic,
vital and physical, is producedby the Sun which is the reservoir of the
electrical, magnetic and vital forcesrequired by our system, which are taken in
by all men, animals, vegetables, minerals and by them translated in to various
life-forces.

Get as much Sunshine as possible in to yourself.Sunshine contains vitality.
Admit lots of Sunshine into your house. (Capt.Walter Carey)

James Allenis an American scientist. Heopines that "each of you think
scientifically rising early is good forhealth. It increases blood circulation.
Body gains energy. This energy helps himspend the entire day enthusiasticallly.

Waking at down blossoms the intellect. Solution can be found for any kind
problems since onecan examine the problem analytically during those hours. The
brain remains calm and whatever is read is firmly understood andremembered.

Early in the mornings the weather is tranquil. Oxygenis present in greater
ratio. Lungs get healthy air. When the warm rays of the sunfall on the skin
there will be no skin diseases. Sweat pores will be activated.Digestion will
improve. Thus say physiologists.

There are other advantages of waking up at Braahmi.Throughout the night the
wind takes unimaginable amounts of Amrutham (elixir)from the rays of the moon
and the stars. This wind provides a healthy cover inthe atmosphere at dawn.

The air during Braahmi Muhurtamis called 'Veeravayu'. The Veeravayu helps the
body maintain goodhealth, increases the facial glow, inspires the mind and
sharpens the intellect

At dawn, it issaid, manes in the other world are at peace and gain strength.
This strengthspreads across the world.

54 PANCHANGAM

"Vedic rituals areperformed according to the position of various planets [and
the sun and themoon]. There are rules to determine this. The right day and hour
[muhurat] fora function is fixed according to the position of celestial
bodies." (Divine sayings of Peria Periayaval)

In Hindu Society, allimportant functions or rituals will be conducted only
after choosing a propertime for them This is done with the help of Almanac or
Panchanga(m), an importantbooklet possessed by every house-hold in Hindu
families throughout the world. It is common even amongst some Muslim
orChristian families to consult an almanac before finalizing the timing of
anyauspicious event.

The Sanskrit word "Panchanga" means fivesegments or limbs, namely, Thithi
(lunar day), Vara (week day), Nakshatra(constellation), Yoga (luni-solar day)
and Karana (half of a lunar day).

The five limbs of the Panchanga represent the fivesources of energy, visible as
well as invisible, as denoted by these segmentsin a day.

It is believed by thefollowers of the Panchanga that a proper balance of these
energies is necessaryfor health, wealth and prosperity of mankind. The almanac
provides guidelinesfor a person to undertake various activities in accordance
with the bestpossible and most beneficial combination of these five elements
signified bythe five limbs. The combination varies depending on the nature of
activityundertaken. The time so chosen for these activities, religious, social
orotherwise, is called a "Muhurtha(m)". In a Hindu family or Society, no
religious orsocial activity, which is compared important, is undertaken without
fixing aproper muhurtha(m).

Thus, apart from individual’s activities, dates for thefestivals, sowing of
plants and other agricultural activities and commonreligious functions are also
chosen or determined on the basis of auspicioustime indicated in the Panchanga.

Panchangam or Almanac willfurnish the user with the details like duration of
Thidhis, Nakshatras (stars),moments of Grahas, auspicious occasions, Muhurats,
Festivals, Subh & Asubh,Sunrise, Sunset, Varjyam (dur-Muhurat), etc. for all
the days. Info aboutNakshatras, Rasi (Zodiac signs), daily / weekly / monthly /
yearly predictions, remedies for astrological doshas, etc. will be furnished in
a way thatenables even a layman to understand it at a glance.

Make a commitment to follow the path of no resistance. This is the path through
which nature's intelligence unfolds spontaneously, without friction or effort.
When you have the exquisite combination ofacceptance, responsibility, and
defencelessness, you will experience lifeflowing with effortless ease.

55 Peace within, throughrenunciation

Wherea man is compelled to walk on a road full of thorns, he uses footwear.
Likewisewhen he is made to experience the trammels of the world, he can
surmount anyobstacle using God's names as a protective armous.

Chanting is an easy process and the names exert apowerful influence on man and
condition hismind. Peace within can be enjoyed through renunciation and purity

No one is asked to discard family ties and runaway from homes seeking
solitude.

On the other hand, he shoulddischarge his family obligations but while doing
so, he should always rememberGod and dedicate the fruits of his action at His
feet.

Heshould remain detached. He can cultivate devotion by the recitation of
Divineattributes, which serve to flush out the impurities in his mind.

Even as the jackfruit is obtained only by peeling theouter skin by smearing oil
on the palms, gradual detachment is possible bycontinuously chanting God's
names.

Man should avoid greed and treat lust and lucrewith contempt.

These are some of the teachings of RamakrishnaParamahamsa, who was born 150
years ago and lived for nearly five decades. The Ramakrishna monastic order
wasestablished a century ago. He was one of the God-men. In preaching the
gospelof God, Swami Ramakrishna asked men to entrust the burden of life at
God's feeteven as a traveller in a train keeps his luggage on the upper rack.
He does not carry it onhis head while the train is in motion.

Ina lecture Sri. N. Giridhari Prasad said the saint went through a process
ofself-introspection, practised spiritual discipline and then
startedsermonising. He based his teachings on Vedic tenets. According to
thesaint( Parmahamsa) , the world may be likened to water and the mind to
milk;the latter, once mixed with the former, cannot be brought back to its
originalform.

Its purity can be keptonly in another state, that is if it is turned into
butter and then placed inwater, "Let the milk of your mind be churned into the
Butter of DivineLove by means of religious practices done in solitude.
