THE MOON- CHANDRAN 2

Continuedfrom part1.

Dear friends,

In the introductory lines I liketo add about the ECLIPSES.We know the period
and occurrences of lunar eclipses are more. While lunareclipse might be 4 or
five, solar eclipse is one or two in a year.

In pure scientific terms, a lunareclipse may be described as the phenomenon
when the Earth moves in between Sunand Moon and obstructs the sunlight
reflected by the lunar surface. 26-5-2021Wednesday, a lunar eclipse is to
occur.

A mythological story about thelunar eclipse is told in this posting.

Sincerely,

Gopala Krishnan 22-4-2012

1. Introduction to Sukraacharya and mrithasanjivani manthra.

Sukraacharya was asura guru.Doing penance on Lord Siva, he obtained the manthra
called- Mritha Sanjeevani. Thismanthra on reciting, Sukraacharya could revive
to life dead asuras in theDevasura yuddam. (Battlebetween Devas and asuras)

So in the battles between Devasand asuras, Devas were getting dead and asuras
were getting revived outnumbering devas. Deva guru Jupiterwas not knowing any
such manthra.

The situation was alarming anddevas approached Mahavishnu for a solution as
usual.

2. Lord Mahavishnu suggested to obtain nectar by churning milky ocean.

By consuming a little nectar, devas could gain immortality. But the task was not
so simple. Finally it wasdecided to get the help ofasuras who could do hard
works, and share nectar to them also andmake them agree to churn the milky
ocean.

Using Vasuki (snake) as the rope,Mandhara Mountain as matthu (churn staff) for
churning, the churning started.Asuras hold the head portion of vasuki and Devas
the tail.  This holding has slight importance in mystory telling.

During churning many thingsappeared. After appearance of Lakshmi, God
Dhanwanthari appeared with nectar pot finally.

In between a beautiful girlcalled AHALAYA appeared. An episode of   Ahalya is
slightlyrelated to Moon, I will write it later. Just mentioned it.

3. Mohini distribute nectar

Once nectar got on hand, it wassecretly decided to serve it to Devas alone and
to serve liquor in its place toAsuras from deva’s side.

Mahavishnu took the form of abeautiful women Mohiniand started to give from two
pots the nectar to Devas and liquor to asuras.Mohini was also performing an
enchanting dance. Most of the asuras got delighted in the dance afterthe
tiresome churning and taking intoxicating liquor. Probably theywould have
thought that liquor was nectar.

4. Asura Rahu observes distribution.

All asuras were not unique. Oneasura by name (Viprachiitti) Rahu observed,
Mohini serving from one pot todevas in continuation and from another pot only
to asuras.  He felt something mysterious.

5. Rahu takes the form of Deva.

Rahu took the form of a Deva andsat last of Devas which was seen clearly by the
MOON. Sun was also sitting nearMoon. He agreed to tell about Rahu to Mohini,
but kept himself as if innocent.

Mohini was nearing Rahu at theend with her dance and distribution of nectar.

MOON gave to Mohini a signalabout Rahu sitting in the side of Devas. But by the
time Rahu had consumed onehandful already of the nectar served to him.

The legend goes, Rahu was severedin the neck with a sword by Mahavishnu, but
due to consuming of nectar just atthe moment, head REMAINEDwith life, Body
became life less.

6. Rahu takes a snake’s form.

Probably churning was done withsnake as rope, Rahu took the form of a person
with his asura head and SNAKEBODY. The lower part of the body was fitted with a
snake head.

7. Rahu develops enmity to moon since he pin- pointed him and want toattack.

It was decided, better Rahu couldbe approved, and if possible he can attack
Moon occasionally, opposing himrather than going to other terms and conditions
to close the issue.

8. Rahu moves always in a path opposing Moon.

Due to fear of Rahu opposing,MOON moves quickly, mostly without coming under
his eyes. Rahu moves slowly knowing “Slow and steady” is better for attacking
themoon.

9. Lunar eclipse.

The aim of Rahu is keep moonslightly frightened.  When Rahurecollects, the old
incidents, he makes a careful watch on MOON and stop himand swallow him, but
after some time release him.

This period is called Grahanam (eclipse) .When anger is more for Rahu   the
period is more for the eclipse. Four orfive times Rahu becomes   angrier in
ayear.

10. Solar eclipse.

Since the Sun also favoured MOONin telling about Rahu disguise, but kept quiet,
Rahu’s enmity is less with Sun.  Hence only one or two solar eclipses occurs
forshort duration.

There is exaggeration, and slight variationsto make the legend interesting to
read.

Tomorrow I will continue with “Tharablam,chandrabalam, thathaiva”…
