NANDINI Dear friends,
Nandini is a sweet name. In Karnataka, Government dairyproducts comes under the brand name NANDINI. I thought my posting could beabout yagyas and related thoughts using diary product – GHEE, with a briefabout cow Nandini. Nandini is a common name among Hindu girls, now manyBrahmin girls are also named as Nandini. Sincerely, Gopala Krishnan 6-6-2021 1. COWS KAMADHENUAND NANDINI Cow NANDINI was the daughter of divine cow KAMADHENU.Kamadhenu appeared during churning of milky ocean. Lord BRAHMA allocated her tosage VASISTHA present there being the best to own her. One day King VISWAMITHRA came to the hermitage of sageVasistha. He was warmly welcomed and received by sage Vasistha. The kingunderstood about the DIVINE COW, its capabilities and felt if the cow could bewith him it could be more beneficial. Vasistha leastdesired to give the divine cow to Viswamithra nor the cow liked to be withViswamithra at that time. To get the divine cow, Viswamithra took thapasyaleaving the kingdom to his successor. He became a RAJARSHI, still he had pride. Rajarshi Viswamithra was in rivalry with Brahmarshi Vasisthafor long time. Once he lost the pride, he became the DEVARSHI, and Vasisthawhole-heartedly gave Kamadhenu to Viswamithra. Kamadhenu had two daughters- Nandini and PATTI. For the divine cow, they couldbe MANASA PUTHRIES as nothing more is told. Nandini in due course of time came to sage JAMADAGNI.The divine cow Patti is worshipped at PATTESWARAM near Tanjavur. I do not have any information about temples to Kamadhenu or Nandini. In a very similar manner to the incident of sageViswamithra, King KARTHA-VEERYARJUNA one day came to the hermitage of sageJamadagni. Seeing the divine cow with all the capabilities like her mother, theKing desired to own her. But Jamadagni too was not ready to give her. Karthaveeryarjuna tried to steal the cow but was defeated in his attempt. In theanger with revenge he killed sage Jamadagni. 1a Sage Parasurama PARASURAMA, son of sage Jamadagni could not toleratethe action of Karthaveeryarjuna. He not only defeated and killed him, but inrevenge defeated all Kshathria kings and killed them. The entire lands of theirkingdoms, he gave to sage KASHYAPA as danam for papa viimochanam. For the sin of killing the kings, sage Parasuramawanted to do penance. He prayed to LORD VARUNA (King of water/sea) to give himsome land. Varuna pleased with his penance, asked to throw his axe, the entirearea, sea would retreat and will become land for his penance. The land thusoriginated is the KERALAM. Parasurama did penance and erected a number oftemples in Kerala. Kerala is named PARASURAMA KSHETHRAM. Parasurama isworshipped as God, one of the incarnations of Vishnu. There are only raretemples for him, onesuch temple is at TIRUVLLAM near Trivandrum. He brought Brahmins from North India to perform poojasin the temples in the land. They settled in 64 villages of Kerala. They are theNAMPOOTHIRI BRAHMINS of Kerala. The pooja vidhies of Nampoothiri is moreTHANTHRA based than MANTHRA. The nampoothiries are the thanthries (Authoritativepriests) in temples of Kerala. Their decisions are to be complied with asultimate. Till linguistic based Kerala was formed, Kerala was the stretch of landfrom GOKARNAM to KANYAKUMARI. I have studied so in primary classes. 2. Domestication ofcow The cow might have been domesticated from KRITAYUGA.YASODA AND NANDAGOPAR, were YADAVAS, who brought up Krishna at VRINDAVAN. Theywere people domesticating cow and prepare dairy products. Ghee, the dairy product is used for yagyas. Mostprobably she buffalo domestication would have been later, since wherever milkand dairy products are told, it is told from cows. 3. Vedic reference The yagyas are described for well-being and ghee isoffered with manthras in Agni (FIRE) and yagyas are told in Vedas. From yagyas the performer could receive the objected siddhies. 3a.1stDakshayagam The first yagya could be the one performed by kingDAKSHA inviting all trinities. Daksha is the mind born son of BRAHMA. Daksha had married his daughter Sati to LordSiva. Daksha did not relish, Lord Siva did not rise from the seat, being hisson in law when he entered. Similar to Brahma and Vishnu he was also sitting. Daksha felt being his son in Law, marrying hisdaughter SATI, Lord Siva should get up and honour him. Other son in laws likeKASHYAPA, CHANDRA, and DHARMA RAJA got up and honoured Daksha when he entered. 3b. 2ndDakshayagam. On account of this in the second yagya performed byDaksha, he did not invite purposely Lord Siva- his son in law. Feeling, father need not invite, Sati came to yagya though Lord Sivadid not consent for her going. In spite she came without even inviting. She was not received well and she found the share dueto her Husband Siva was not proportioned in the yagya by Daksha. Seeing this,Sati became very sad, and in her angerimmolated herself creating FIRE FROM HER ANGER. They yagya was spoiled by theGanas following her and Dakshawas killed cutting his head by Ganas. Hearing the news of immolation of Sati, Lord Sivarushed, in his anger he took the charred body of Sati from fire, and shakingit, he started RUDRATHANDAVAM. Finally Brahma and Vishnu, somehow cooled Lord Siva,Daksha was revived, fixing the head of a GOAT. The disrupted yagya was somehowcompleted honouringSiva NOW. 4. Puthra Kameshtiyagam. King Dasaratha in THRETHAYUGA performed the Puthra Kameshti yagam. In the yagam, at the final stage Pudding appeared from yagya fire, it was givento his queens KOUSALYA AND KAIKEYI. The third queen SUMITRA came a little late, both Kausalyaand Kaikeyi shared a part to her. So four sons were born, two from Sumitra andone each from Kousalya and Kaikeyi as desired during performing the yagya. The four children were SREE RAMA, BHARATHA, andLAKSHMANA AND SATRUGNA. Sree Rama was born with fourhands and grown and talking, but when Kousalya got excited, he tookthe form of a normal child. The yagya was performedby sage RISHYASRINGA, in fact his son in law. 5. Sree Rama andAswamedha yagam. According to UTTHARA RAMAYANAM, Sree Rama performed ayagya, during his regime in which he could get meet his challenging sons Lava and Kusa and get back to him. 6. Dharma puthraand Aswamedha yagam After the Mahabharatha war, Dharma puthra assumed thethrone. An aswamedhayaga was performed on the advice of Lord Krishna in duecourse. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Thatha_Patty" group.
