KATHODU KATHORAM EAR TO EAR Dear friends,
Today’s topic is ear. Humans cannot move external ear.But very rare can.Elephants can move their ear from back to front and front to back. I think noother animal can do so. Some dogs havebig sagging outer ears, which would be moving while the dog shakes its face orwalking. Many animals like rabbits have the ears vertical. Someothers like cows have slightly slanting ones. Just by seeing the drawing masterputting two vertical ears, on those days we could say- today’s drawing is ofRABBIT. I learnt very late that ear is not only for hearingbut also for correct BALANCINGOF BODY. When the balance is not there people may not be able to moveproperly. A look in to EAR. Sincerely, Gopala Krishnan 14-12-2012. Edited, updatedand reposted on 8-6-2021. R. Gopala Krishnan 1. Kuttikurrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr It was a habit on the boyhood days calling a friendnear for telling a secret in their ear, and when he show his ear close, produce voice in to ear as kutti kurrrrrrrrrrrrr. The highpitch of the sound gives some discomfort to the listener’s ear. Knowing this, many times if one say I will tell asecret, the other would say I know your secret. If the first continue- I will tell anothersecret. It need not be kutti kurrrrrrrrrr but a whistling using lips. Most important-a person is also made to smileinvoluntary by hearing kuttikurrrrrrrr. If not believing try and observe. Ear is very sensitive. Though lightning during rain isto be feared, most fear more the thunders. We can see people closing the earson seeing the lightning expecting the thunder- especially women. 2. Change ofvoice in telephone The human voice contains many frequencies. Very high, high, medium and low. From thisintelligent portion (High and medium) is selected by electronic filter. This isconverted in communication as binary codes and sent. These codes arereconverted into voice. In present day communication voice is NOTTRANSMITTED. Hence the peaks and lowsare not available for hundred percent clarity. We would be recognizing thevoice due to frequent talk, and familiarity with this INTELLEGENT TALK. 3. Pathukkaeparanja mathi enikku kekkam. (I can hear, talk with reduced voice) Most people who have a problem of hearing are foundtalking loudly. Theymay not be knowing they are talking so loud. Since our talk is heard in our ear also, automatically mouth decreases the volume among normal people. I recollect an incident of two advocates who arebrothers while working in Krishnagiri. They came to me with the complaint that theyare not able to hear properly in phone. While talking, both wanted me to talk louder. I asked my staff to bring an amplifier phone (Increasevolume by rotating a visibleswitch). I demonstrated and happily they desired it. Having no otherdemand, I asked my staff to install issuing necessary orders (Additionalcharges are there for special phones) Next day I was just getting out of my office for somework at Hosur. Both turned up, having the telephone received holding in thehand. I enquired the reason. I could not control laugh- Their children asked them to return at theearliest. You wantedto show everybody that you are having hearing problem... One of themsaid- Sir please take it back. We would not get cases. We would be called – kathukekkattha vakkil!!! (Advocates not able to hear properly). Really I could not control my laugh recollecting thesituation, both in advocate dress, one holding the amplifier phone, otherfiles and both having a smile of gotfooled ( Viddi chiri)…. 4. Downgradedhearing machine…. The hearing machine is to correct the hearing, verysimilar in purpose that the spectacles are to correct eyesight. But the spectaclesoccupy a high position. He isnever looked down, if at all he is having soda bottle type glasses. But my poorhearing aid, kept at the back of ear is specially looked as if he is a big EXTRA. 5. Pampintaekaathu (Hearing of snake) I have read snakes have no ears. But a person sharp inhearing especially NOT DESIRED ITEMS spoken between two is often told as having“hearing capacity of snakes). When two people talk very private and confidentialthings in low voice, these type of people standing or sitting slightly away couldhear it. 6. Kathupirikkuka (Forcibly pinch with finger tips on ear and rotate) On those days some teachers in primary schools used tohave such corrective habit to make a student listen and learn or not to create mischief by pinchingears. Some parents also have this naturewith their kids. Mostly this nature comes to parents from genes. If the force is more, the ear would become reddish.Parents used to warn the teachers through Headmaster also to prevent from suchactions. As I said, being sensitive the pain is more. I recollect getting such pinches from Kalyaniamma teacher while studying in 3rd or 4th standards. 7. Kathilaepoo chuttiyavan (A person wearing flower in the ear) In Tamilnadu it is a common use of talking like of aperson wearing flower on ear, for mentally disturbed. Especially hibiscus. It is also used to meanof a person not able to understand the motives/inner motives of the other. In Malayalam we used to say- Enikku onnummanasil aavillla ennu vichariccho? 8. Chevithhondi and pallukutthi On those days it was a common scene in bazaar to seepeople selling the above items mostly made of copper. Now too tooth picker is there in star and bighotels made of soft wood. Chevithondi has been replaced with cotton buds. 8a.Haha..Enthu suham. Doctors’ advice buds should not be used inside andonly externally in the ear. But itching by dried earwax finds its place deepinside. According to my family doctor, during head bath watergoes inside the ear, softens the ear wax if any and just pressing towel withlittle finger over the ear it would come out if not coming automatically. All said, practically, when earwax rolling or itchingappears, one would put a bud inside knowingly. 9.Kathundengil poraa, kekkanam. The saying means one should listen carefully. Nopurpose is served by simple hearing without listening. Our brain has wonderful capacities. When a person isnot interested to listen another, he would simply hear not able to avoid. It iscommon between MIL and DIL. Who scoremore cannot be told by any- body. When wife talk of uninterested talks husbandswould simply hear. A common experience to many. 10. Ear wax,ear hairs. Throughout human body over the skin there are hairs, somemore visible, some microscopic. Exception is below feet and in palms. Every person has hair in the ear and has earwax. Both are for protecting the ear. Excess earwax is the one falling down. Hairgrowth is less unless pulled or cut. Some male people have growth of hair on the insideof ear and over ear lobes also. Normally the hairs fall and new ones would comeup. But for some itgrows like hair in head probably due to chromosome problem. RecentlyI received a photo of a person having much grown hair from outer ear as aforward. 11. Enkittae Kathu kuttharaya?… (Are you piercingmy ear?) This is another saying in Tamil, meaning I don’tbelieve your versions and talks. Something like Eea parippu evidae vekilla in Malayalam. 12. Pattukeattal aarkku soukyam pattiniyai kitakkumbol? (When one is hungry what is the interest in hearingmusic) Ear enjoys music when a person is comforted. When aperson is having discomfort, any music, talk or sound would be irritating. The subtitleis the lines of Kunjannambiar. It is the habit of many male members to switch off radio/TV while gettingin to home after outside work.
