POOVENUUMCHOLLUVANGA…
Dear friends,

Whilereturning after submitting some papers in my Telecom office today
afternoon,   I came across a beautiful lake with full ofLotus flowers at
Pallikkaranai. I have passed through this lake many times. Butno time it was so
blooming with lotus as today. My thinking went about flowers.Nostalgic and
realistic thinking about flowers and talks.

Flowerhas other meanings also depend on contests.

Sincerely

1. Poovennum cholluvanga…

My fatheroften used to say for different words meaning the same thing,
sometimes with adifferent ascent   by some people with anexample- “Poovennum
cholluvanga, pushpamennum cholluvanga, pinnae ayyaruchonnamathiriyum
cholluvanga.”

We cansay as Poo, Pushpam or as the priest said meaning FLOWER.

2. Mallippoo iddali.

MADURAIin Tamilnadu is famous for soft iddalis. A person normally consuming 4
numbers iddaliwould eat six without counting at Madurai. Afterwards only he
would startcounting whether he is consumed more.

In arecent betrothal function in a relative’s house a few     iyers were
talking. The talk was going onabout Madurai iddali among them since one of them
was from Madurai - “Ennappairukku-Idlinga”. (What is available – Iddali).
Madurai hotels might have iddaliavailable for more time in the morning for
breakfast.

One iyercommented - Madurai Malligaippoo iddali. One RAMBHAM IYER commented-
But forthat ladies cannot adorn instead of jasmine flowers, iddali in the
hair. However smile appeared in all person’s faces since he was VIP among them.

In anearlier occasion a talk was going on about Mallippoo iddali of Madurai in
aChennai function. One iyer commented- only if we are in Madurai for some
cause, then only we can go for Malligaippoo iddali, for eating Mullappoo iddali
onecannot go to Madurai. We have to satisfy with local iddali.  I thought the
talk would end there with anagreement since this too was slightrambham.

There was another iyer who added- we (males)will take Mullappoo iddali at
Madurai and enjoy. But I think our ladies maymostly eat just a small piece of
IDDALI from our plate and order their favoriteCHAPPATHI. I really enjoyed this
second comment.

3. Smelling flowers.

Normallythis is a string of words used to mean, persons with distinguishing
andappreciating character. Even I have used it in my postings. Everywhere we
cansee smelling flowers distinguishing from normal flowers. They are lesser.

YesterdayI had a work In State bank of India. I met the chief manager,
processed thematter and he requested me to give operation Manger since no
attendant available.I stood in the queue with the paper. Only one person
before. Seeing the paper hesmiled and answered- I will do it leisurely in the
evening. I just checked inthe night. It was done. There are smelling flowers
with smile to customers.

4. Flowered.

Floweredis a word used to mean a girl has started menstruation. In Tamilnadu
villagesstill celebration is done about it. But in most towns and cities, it
isconsidered as a usual phenomenon by parents. This is including iyers.
“Pushpiniaayi” are the words in Malayalam to indicate the same.

5. Ppovo kaayo pazhamao? (Flower, raw or ripenedfruit?)

This wayof talking is quite common in the context of interviews, asking for
loans,seeing girls for marriage etc.

Ppoo(flower) means hope, raw (kai) means somewhat settled and Pazham
(fruit)meaning fully settled, gained or liked depend on the context.

6. Tulasippo and Lord Siva;

We allknow thulasippo means the leaves of the plant Tulasi. The real flowers
arethrown of and leaves are used as flowers. The vilva are MORE FAVOURED in
Sivatemples. While I was writing about Siva temples, I wanted to write about
Tulasiand chandanam given as prasadam in Siva temples. Tulasi and chandanam are
NOTBARRED IN SIVA TEMPLES. Bhasmam and Vilwam are more preferred.

Last weekwhen I was in Ernakulam Siva temple, the prasadam given was Chandanam
andthulasi.

6a. Tulasi varieties

KrishnaTulasi has dark green leaves. Rama Tulasi has green leaves, and Karppora
Tulasihas still greener colour and grows wider. Karpoora thulasi has more
liquidcontent comparing to the other two and still more smelling. However the
plantis tenderer.

Both RamaTulasi and Krishna Tulasi are used in temples; Karpoora Tulasi is not
used inKerala temples. But in Tamilnadu it is used.

Tulasi isthe only flower, which is permitted for RE-USING AFTER WASHING. This I
have read throughnet.

I thinkTulasi garlands are many times washed and resold near Perumal temples.
They arepriced less on account of it, as felt by me.

6b. Flowers are attractive but not smelling.

Manyflowers are not smelling but colourful. We can watch them for hours for
theirappearance. Ambaratthi (Large size chembarathi) and different forms
ofchembarathi in different colours, Kozhivalan flowers, Arali, Sankhu
pushpam,Rajamalli etc. are examples. After a visit to Nilgiries I purchased a
few crotons. One of them grows large climbing on wall and giving large yellow
flowers.

7. Nalumanippo and anjumani ppo and Parijatham.

Still I feelit a wonder, how the first two flower blossom in the time and
Parijatham flowersin the midnight. While most flowers blossom in the morning,
how these flowersalone are special. Similarly flowers like Nisa Gandhhi. Many
times theParijatham smell in the front garden through closed windows to me in
the frontroom.

8. Thetti and Asokam

Whileboth these flowers are somewhat identical, how do the Asokam alone is
grown ina tree? Thetti is a bush. Asokam has a friend- Konna, a must for
Vishukkani. Konnagrows as tree.

Incidentallykonna is used to mention indirectly beautiful teen girls/young
women.

9. Flowers in Mythology.

Everybodymay be recollecting the efforts of Sri Krishna to get Parijatham from
LordIndra and planting in Sathyabhama’s garden and flowers falling in
Rukmini’sgarden.

Ravanaseated Seetha in the asoka garden after stealing her with the aid of
Mareechaduring the forest life.

Bhima wasASKED to get the Kalyana sougandhikam flower by Droupadi feeling he is
thefittest to get it.  This too in forestlife.

In theSree Krishna Tulabharam, Rukminiplaced a single Tulasi leaf, to the kilos
of gold ornaments kept bySathyabhama to equal the weight of Krishna.

TheRasaleela was in the Vrindavan gardens with all smelling flowers. Probably
whentold of Radha as “VrindavanathlaeRadha”, it was more amusing to hear it in
Krishna legends.

10. Flower garlands.

Theflower garlands has its beginning even before the CHURNING OF MILKY
OCEAN.Churning ocean has its base- Cursing by sage DURVASA for not respecting
the garlandgiven to INDRA by him – Indra putting it on the elephant and the
elephanttearing it keeping under its feet, for the bees attacking it.

11. Beauty of flowers

Either asgarland or as bouquet or as bunch or as heap, flowers are beautiful to
see. Some of the smelling flowers have more attraction- Roses and Jasmine.

InTamilnadu one can see women wearing non-smelling flowers also- Kadambam. I
have not seenit in Kerala.

12. Not attractive but most smelling

TheKaithappo smells for a very long distance either in the plant or from a
personwearing a bit of it. Normally in costly marriage garlands, a piece of
kaithappois attached while making.

13. Flowers decoration.

For manyfestivals, samskaras flowers are used in abundance. During most
marriages now,the attending women are given stitched jasmine. In the reception
roses would bethere. For daily poojas as well as festivals flowers are used.

Somerestriction of flowers is made for use in temples. All flowers are not
used. For Devi/ Kali temples red flowers have prominence.  Flowers are kept in
one form or other in mosthouses, offices etc.

14. Widows and flower

At onetime widows were permitted to wear only one flower- Tulasi. Now too
orthodox donot wear other flowers.

I do not know the beginning of calling peoplewearing garlands of chembaratthi
or keeping chembarathi on ear as insane.

I haveseen gay people wearing jasmine garlands in the hand as an indication.

For srardha the only flower is used is Tulasi.

15. Lotus

I startedwith Lotus. Lotus blossom with sunrise and close with sunset.  For
Vishnu temple, sasthapreethi, Krishnantemples, lotus is very much used in
worshipping. Many pictures of Goddesslekshmi are drawn, Lakshmi sitting on the
Lotus.
