155  Thiruvanchikkulam Mahadevar Temple

Thiruvanchikkulam Mahadevar Uma -Maheshwar Temple the only one Siva temple
where Siva and Devi together insanctum at Thiruppathy in Kerala 2.5 kilometers
south of kodungallur easternside of   main road. It was the tutelardeity of
Cheraman perumal. The temples history reveals that it has muchrelation with the
temples of Tamil nadu.

Dampathy   pooja ( Pooja for devine couple ) isimportant.

Kumbham 8 days festivalMeenabharani and Amavasi Arattu.

The Siva Temple at Thiruvanchikulamin Kodungallur is one of the earliest    and
ancient temples in Kerala and is of great historic importance. Itis  said that
here the Saivite saintSundarmoorthy Nayanar and his royal friend Cheraman
Perumal worshipped LordSiva and attained eternal bliss and reached Kailas by
mounting athousand-tusked white elephant and a blue horse respectively.

It happened on Swati day in themonth of Karkidakam (August-September) and it is
also believed that the"Kollam" Era (Malayalam) started from that day. Every
year there arespecial poojas       conducted at theirshrines in this temple.

When Umamaheswara appeared in  this place once surrounded by paddy fieldsVasuki
the godly serpent and   holy nagas(serpents) stood guard and worshipped the
divine one and the       priceless treasures beneath the idol.

This self-incarnated Linga in thepresent Sanctum Sanctorum' of the temple is
only some four inches above    the ground level and is in the form of ahalf
circle, 12" in diameter.

There is water all round, believedto be the Ganga. One Malayali Brahmin
(Namboothiri) was fortunate to take awaythe Vasuki the Holy Naga King, on a
palmyrah leaf umbrella to his home (Mana ormom) by the grace  of Vanchulesa and
itis believed that the Namboothiri family, now famous in   Kerala as
Pambummekkattu mana ,prosperedafterwards by worshipping the Nagas.

This mans  is some six miles east of this shrine. Overthe head of the idol,
more towards the left side, there is a scar mark. Thelegend has it that  when
the Lordwith his consort Maheswari appeared before Arjuna in the forms of
Kiratha andKirathi (hunter and huntress)

Arjuna mistakenly beat  at the forehead of the Lord making this mark.

On the left side of the  front of the Mukhamandapam (entrance) a stonecarving
depicting Siva and       Parvathycould be seen. It isalso said that Uma and
Maheswara appeared here as Ardhanareeswara, the left side of the idol
representing, Naari  (Uma) and the right, Naran (Maheswaran).

The main and most coveted ritual   to Vanchulesa is Dhara, non-stop pouring
ofwater, Abhishekam with  chanting of RudraManthram. Ekadasa Rudram, Sankha
abhishekam, Mrithyunjaya havanom etc. are believed to be very efficacious.

Uma Maheswara Pooja or Dampathi Pooja is a speciality here. The mainfestival
is in the month ofKumbham. It lasts for eight days commencing on the
Ashtami day of Krishna Paksha as Kodiyettam(Flag hoisting) and Arattu on the
Amavasi day after Sivarathri. Arattu isconducted at the sea, 4 miles
westfrom the temple.

Ganapathy is the leader of the Ganas. ie, the leader of groups, tribes,

There are multiple versions about the origin of Lord Vinayaka. According to

With theconsent of Parvathy devi, Siva agreed to the proposal. Devi become

gathered aroundthe baby .Keeping in mind the character of the ladies Parvathy
blessed her child withthese words, “may your beauty change to that of a tusker
headed body with a bigbelly”.

Her desire was fulfilled. But Lord Siva, though unhappy, named him Ganesa and
he blessed Ganesha saying:”Your position will be above allGanas. All gods will
acknowledge the prominence of Ganesa , and those who arenot ready to worship
you will fall into deep waters.

(The story has no death of Ganesha baby andreviving with elephant head)

D The origin ofGanapathy- Skanda  purana

The Skandapurana says thatGanapathy was formed from the dirt collected from
the body of Goddess Parvathy.

Devi created an extraordinary elephant headed creaturewith four arms and
deputed him to safeguard the entrance towards the Chandraprathishta, which was
beingperformed in heaven.

Parvathythus created a figure out of the dirt she had washed away from her
body andgive breathe to it by sprinkling water from the Ganges. As usual Siva
tried toenter the bathing place of Parvathy.

The guard didn’t allow him in. Furious, Siva cut the guard’sthroat. Fearing
Parvathy’s anger, Siva swiftly went out. He saw an elephant there, cutdown its
head and fixed it to the body of Parvathy’s creation. Thus wasborn Parvathy’s
son, the elephant headed Ganapathy.

F The origin ofGanapathy- Padma  purana

According tothe Padmapurana, Parvathy, like all ofGod’s creations, had the
desire to give birth to a son who would be theembodiment of all virtue. Forthis
she prayed to God Vishnu who appeared before her. He granted herwish by taking
birth in her womb. The son thus born to Parvathy is Ganapathy.
