COVER Dear friends,
Today morning I prepared a requisition to the bankas desired by the bank manager for processing a request, when I contacted himyesterday. I had a recollection 2-3 years back the postal staff distributingcovers, stamps etc. to homes and Ipurchased a dozen covers. I put the requisition in cover and pasted the flapand posted in the nearest post box. I thought today my posting can be aboutCOVERS and related items. Sincerely, Gopala Krishnan 29-6-2021 1. Postal covers During myhigh school days the only cover we could obtain was ordinary postal cover. This cover had valueprinted. If the postal rate for cover was increased, additional stamp wasaffixed and given, from the post office. It is anold joke of a Panikker in a Kerala village who gave jewel loans. He read in thenewspaper an announcement from postal department – postal charges are gettingincreased after a week. Hepurchased two dozens of covers to stock to save money. When theschool teacher from nearby home explained that he had to affix stamps for additionalcharge to post the items in old covers, he felt the folly. At onetime we used to get insuredcovers. The insured covers were printed in blue and had central crossblue lines. They had to be sealed in red wax. The item inside was insured tocertain amount. If theitem was lost the department had to give the person the insured amount. Therewas maximum amount of insurance. But these covers are not there now as I foundfrom a Google search today. Similarlyregistered covers. These covers also notavailable now. Now after weighing, theregistered/ insured receipt is issued. We have to write on top of the cover registered/insured as perthe content. 2 Covers from shops Once wewere getting beautifully border designed white covers with printing AIR MAIL for sendingletters to foreign countries. Such covers distinguished foreign mails. Now practically such covers have disappeared. We get covers in stationary shops either brown or while colour. Post office asks us to write Airmail on it now. Differentsizes of covers are available now. Also strengthened covers with inner clothingare also available in stationary shops. We also get toughened with slight pvcspray on the paper covers where address has to be pasted over it afterprinting. Such strengthened covers are used for issuing plastics by banks. Forcomplimenting money we get complimentcovers ranging from Rs 2-00 to Rs 15-00. However for presenting compliments nowadaysthe invitation cover is used by most in Tamilnadu. Coversfrom stationary shops of different types and sizes are purchased and kept bymost for urgent use. 3 Wrapping paper Manyother types of “covers” are there. We use brown paper for covering study books, library books etc. Though it is wrapping, still colloquially as cover. Presenting articles, etc. are covered withspecial attractive papers. One of my officers used to Call it as “gigina papers” ( Glittering papers) There aremany people who preserve good covers. They could be used for different purposes. Even when accumulate, withreluctance old ones are disposed of. The used covers have many uses in thedomestic front. Earlier ECONOMY SLIPSwere used in offices for reusing covers. I am not sure whether such practice isthere. Nowadays hard copies are preparedonly for most essential things. Now a day file covers are also prepared in theform of a real cover. 4 . Athimbar, Eae kavaril onnum illa.( Thereis nothing inside the cover-brother in law ) Duringthe time of my daughter’s marriage, I entrusted my co brother to see thecompliments received. He was opening and accounting with name, the complimentsreceived after the marriage leisurely. He started opening cash covers. Suddenly he called me and told as above. Ihad used thick covers for marriageinvitation. On openingone cover he found NOTHING inside. I notedthe name, with compliments from…. He wasa fairly known person to me and of cunnynature. Either purposely or incidentally, there was nothing inside the cover. We cannot talk , being a delicate issue about the compliment cover. Later tooin many occasions of my relative’s functions such covers used to appear once awhile and persons use to comment of it.Totally I cannot say itis all due to FORGETTING. 5 Sodamaker carton In one ofthe functions, I received a well-packed compliment of soda maker. Knowing thecolleague who complimented me casuallytalked of the high value compliment. He simply smiled and said- it is for yousir. After two days he enquired me- how is the soda maker sir? I said Ihave not unpacked and kept in store. Onemonth passed. Again he enquired about the soda maker functioning. I decidedto unpack then. My wife imagined about the soda in time, whenever gas problemis felt in stomach and the usefulness of the item and expressed in face andwords. What a nice thing the colleague complimented. Onopening I found, it was a QUALITY BRASS LAMP OF THE SIZE OF SODA MAKER. Having no other suitable cover, he has usedthe soda maker cover available with him.It was the reason for the frequent query by him( Later the colleague told me of it while talking, let me seemyself, hence frequent query from him about it. Whether the complimented lamp was special type, or special quality, before the thinking about soda maker, it had no value in fact… ) I do notknow whether my wife alone got disappointed with lamp instead of soda maker. I alsoin fact got disappointed? I hiredan auto, went to the dealing shop with wife , got a soda maker and enjoyed sodaon the same day. However being packed in sodamaker carton so perfectly, it wasslightly deceiving. Theperson being a close colleague, I hided my disappointment a little andappreciated his lamp. Of course the lamp was with attraction on second seeing. 6. Greeting cover with cheque It was myHARD TIMES. I received a greeting cover with a cheque addressed to my wife on her birthday. I thought knowingour hard times, the cousin in better position would have sent it. But thecheque on close reading contained1000 best wishes !!!. Really atthat time I was having all my gold in loans, all possible loans taken, gettingsalary in hundreds. 7. Cover (wrapper) allathae onnum illa.(Thereis nothing other than cover) On thosedays MANGARAM BISCUITSused to come in very attractive packing. My late brother selling them inrailway canteen stores told me- “Packingopen cheithal akathu patthu biscuit illa” ( If packet is opened, there will notbe even ten biscuits.) He was never forthat biscuits for home use. Now so much attraction is not in cover and biscuitsare one of the less priced food item. My note- Today I was searching for gingerbiscuits if any fromsupermarket in the morning. The assist lady showed me ginger biscuit from parle G with beautifulwrapping. Really it is ginger hot and with good smell. 8. Cover page of books Manymagazines and books we get in very attractive cover. Many of them may have less valuable content for the content. However some used to have both. Now aday most magazines have very attractivecover page prompting people to purchase them. 9. Mama- put an attractive cover One of myclose relative asked me to prepare horoscope of a child with foreign birth ofhis officer . I collected the detailsfrom the officer himself and preparedwith computer print. Therelative called me and said – please get it beautifully bound whether three pages or five pages. Only threepages were there. I gave to a local binding shop and got it bound and gave him Theofficer was very much impressed on the well bound and preparedhoroscope. In return he complimentedwith a high value cheque never in mythoughts. The glittering and beautiful cover binding impressed him much as toldby the relative. My note- I do not perform any astrologyrelated works at present please. 7. Cartons or covers give the appearance. If at allwe give a compliment of pens, if it is in cover it has added value. Now a dayeven quality ballpoint pen comes in richcovers. If wecompliment anything, an attractive cover adds its value. 8. Covers of resorts Normallythe bigger bills of restaurants, resorts etc. are given in their printed covers. Evenmajor shops, jewelry shops give the billin cover. There is somesort of privacy or aristocracy in cover. It is safe to keep also. 9 Inland letter. Though the inlands have many advantages over thecover as a valid writtendocument , normal covers only can be used to send documents. On very late thinking I understood, the Inland means usableWITH IN INDIA. I think since scanning is there or for other reasons, we cannotuse an inland letter paper to send an intimation to a foreign country. If I amwrong kindly correct. 10. Munjagrithai muthanna. Whilesending through post office or courier, in the flaps of the cover especially in the two ends, now it is the practice to paste with PAPERTAPE through the joints for more safety of the documents as well as to avoidtampering. Many official documents we receive in that manner. 11. Immediately disposing covers. Manymagazines we receive with covers of thin plastic type cover. They are leastattractive or useful. The moment magazine is taken, they are thrown off. Evenfor disposing kitchen waste they cannot be used. So such covers are also there 12. Special dust collecting covers of vacuum cleaners etc. In old typevacuum cleaners, paper covers of special quality are/were used for dustcollection.
