MOOKKUTHI (NOSE STUD)

Dear friends,

Yesterday I was seeing the serialManampolae Mangalyam inZee TV Malayalam. The
special attraction of the serial is daughterin law is taking interest for
remarriage of her young mother in law. Specialattraction of the heroine is her
Ear stud. Whereas as a fashion wearing smallear rings by many heroines, her
nose stud gave a special appearance. I thoughtI may write a fresh posting on
Ear stud today

Sincerely,

Gopala Krishnan 8-7-2021

1 Mookuthi and Viswa karma women

In my home   generally Brahmin girls were having theirnose pierced by about 15
and wear nose stud. Women from Viswa karma community (Goldsmith)also used to
wear nose stud. They used to talk a language of mixing of Tamil-Malayalam and
were called “Thattathi thamiz”. In Trivandrum they talk excellentTamil and
excellent Malayalam also. I had never seen other women piercing nose. Now it is
a fashion to have nose rings.

2. Mookutthi- a small ornament

Most wear Mookutthi with three smallstones or single stone or some purely in
gold. Some wear with diamond.

Some Brahmins used to provide thegirls with Diamond ear stud and nose stud
during marriage. Whatever thematerial, the size of nose stud could be small
only whereas ear stud can be to slightlylarge also.

On those days men used to haveear stud and ears pierced. Once the ears pierced,
it remains so with manypeople. As a fashion, now some men also wear ear ring
and ear stud.

3. Men with pierced nose.

Other than tribal, I have notseen males with pierced nose in Kerala. But when I
came to Tamilnadu, I washaving a colleague, who had his nose pierced and
provided with a GOLD RING ofvery small size. Since looking strange I asked him
about it; he said he wasborn after a prayer to Mookayyan and on account of the
prayer it is pierced andworn.

4. Interchange of Kadukkan and Mookkutthi

If the ear stud is small, andmore sets are there, it was common to wear it as
nose stud by some women. Thedifference was not so distinguishable.

Kadukkan means ear stud andMookkuthi means nose stud.

5. Mookutthi- one or two?

Some women wear mookkuthi oneither side of the nose and more on one side- right
side. Being weightlessmaximum 2 grams or three grams, and wearing on nose,
Mookutthi is not a charmfor thieves. They aim in garlands more.

 6. Mookutthi Ppoo

In Kerala I have seen a flower sotiny like a Mookkutthi and in different
colours. Normally it   grows on mud compound wall (kayyala) etc. Ithas a good
smell.

7. Kanya kumari Devi and Eastern gate closing

In Kanya kumari the Devi isadorned with a Mookutthi in the nose. The diamond
was so bright, it is told a ship took it as a light houseand got wrecked in
rocks near the temple. Then onwards the eastern doors are notopened so that the
light will not radiate outside.
