Q1         Could a large underground city existand be active without being
discovered by anyone?

A1         Henrey Bradley Amateur Historian, AdventurerJune 24

The year is 1963, a Turkish man is renovating hisbasement when he finds a
strange old stone wall, which he promptly breaksthrough.

What he found was a largepitch-black dank space, a cold void behind the wall.
Armed with a torch, ourintrepid home renovator crawled through the hole and
found a series of barrelroofed rooms, that had been carved from the volcanic
bedrock.

Those first mysterious roomsturned out to be just a small section of what was
actually an ancient labyrinthof living spaces, communal areas and tunnel
networks, comprising 13 levels thedeepest being 85 metres underground. This
ancient place was large enough tohouse 20,000 people, a massive forgotten
underground city.

Complete with multiple wells fedfrom an almost unlimited source of water having
vast aquifers aka subterraneanlakes, directly beneath the city.

Having explored the nearest roomsand tunnels, our renovator eventually reached
a narrow passageway blocked by ahuge circular stone, similar to a giant
millstone, only this one seemed to havebeen intentionally rolled into place to
block further progress into thesubterranean city.

Imagine setting out to renovateyour basement, perhaps intending to create your
own Man Cave, but instead, youdiscover an ancient underground city, right
beneath your house.

This is just one of several ancient underground citiesthat have since been
discovered in this region, Kaymakli Underground City beinganother fantastic
example, Derinkuyu and Kaymakli are linked by a well-builttunnel, many miles
long.

While no exact age has been established, these largeunderground cities are
thought to have been first built at least 2,800 yearsago. But potentially the
first caves in the soft volcanic bedrock couldhave been inhabited far earlier.

Seriously, is it just me, or thisreminiscent of Zion from the Matrix? I can see
Morpheus shouting at somedeluded elders in this meeting hall.

What is certain, is that for morethan a thousand years various cultures lived
in these underground cities, including early Indo-Europeans, then Greek-speaking
people, then the Romansinteracted with these underground civilisations, then
early Christianssheltered here, they expanded the city and built underground
churches, chapelsand even schools.

Later during the age of the Byzantine Empire, thesetwo cities were
linkedtogether by miles of tunnels and became a thriving hidden society, asafe
haven for many thousands when the Muslim Arabs raided, and later whenMongol and
Steppe tribes pillaged these regions, they likely had no idea thatthriving
cities with vast populations were directly beneath the hooves of theirsteeds.

While some of these strangeancient cities built beneath the earth continued to
be used until the 14thcentury, they were all abandoned and forgotten in the
following centuries. Yetsome of these cities show evidence of being briefly
used since then, by Jewishand Christian groups as sanctuaries during times of
horrific persecution, asrecently as two hundred years ago.

Q2         Why do the majority of talented peopleleave India to settle abroad?

A2         Tushar Joshi A Doctor, an avid reader, and a passionatewriter.
Updated June 3

Because there's a heavy price onehas to pay for being talented in India.

Let me tell you a story toexplain this. The Case of the Dying Doctor

Mr D. completed his MBBS at theage of 24. He wanted to pursue PG and was
studying for it when the governmentindefinitely postponed the exam citing
student safety in Covid-19 era. The same students were thenrequested by the
government to join forces in the fight against Covid-19.

Mr D. took this opportunity toshowcase the love for his country and his skills
as a budding clinician, tohelp the people. He joined the district hospital and
started giving hisservices. He would work an 8 hour shift and then come home to
a deliciousbutter chicken his mother would prepare for him. That was the only
way he couldfeel close to his mother while staying in a separate room all the
while.

One fine day, a patient succumbedto Covid in the hospital. He was handed the
responsibility to share this newswith the attenders of the departed. The moment
the young medico, who had given everything tothis country, shared the news,
this happened.

This, unfortunately is a true story of what happenedto a budding medico
inAssam. He had no obligation to work, no need to stay away from hismother and
above all, he didn't deserve to be treated like this only because hetried to
save the nincompoops that roam this country.

Yes, I know the last sentence hurts. But that's thetruth of the nation we live
in. The hard working intellectual stays silent, likes to do their job and live
peacefully. While the uneducated unemployednincompoops who would have succumbed
to covid way back, if not for the medicalfraternity, do this.

This applies to every field. It's just the manner inwhich nincompoops torture
and harass the talented, that changes.

Coming back to the story - amidstthis tough covid times, all I can say to my
juniors is, leave. If you feelthreatened for your safety or if you are not
complied by any bond and areworking as a goodwill gesture, resign.

If asked the reason- tell people that you are not themoney loving machine that
the society thinks doctors are, and are happyto take care of yourself and your
family by staying at home. You don't deservethrashing and the idiots of the
country don't deserve saving at the cost ofyour life. You have a family too!

Dr Praveen Tripathi sir articulated the current situationbeautifully .

Till this keeps on happening, young and talented doctors and individuals from
every field, will rightlfullydo their very best to leave the nation and settle
in a country where theirtalent is respected and nincompoops have no power over
them.

After such incidents, in a choicebetween staying at home or working as a doctor
to carry the burden of a failedhealthcare system - budding medicos like Mr D.
would choose the former.

Getting thrashed is nowherebetter than eating mother's handmade butter chicken
anyday!

Q3         Does your body absorb salt whenswimming in the sea, and subsequently
make you want to drink more water?

A3         Meg Osterby , former Chemistry/ Biochemistry/Chemical
SafetyInstructor (2000-2017) Answered July 27, 2020.

in the sea, your body does not absorb salt, but it doeslose water. A watery
solution in your body with low concentrationseparated by the membrane of your
skin from a watery solution with a high saltconcentration, the sea, will always
have osmosis mostly occur from low to highsalt concentration, because nature
will always try to equalize theconcentrations by diffusion across the membrane.
So yes, youget thirsty, not because you gain salt, but because you lose water.

You also losewater by the sun heating your skin, and thirdly by the breeze
causingevaporation of water from your hot skin.

So, if you spend a hot, sunny dayat beach, in and out of the sea, you’d better
drink lots of watery drinks (not alcoholic drinks, they aredehydrating so make
the problem worse). If you read stories aboutpeople who were lost at sea for
any length of time and then rescued, theyalways say they are being treated for
dehydration.

Q6         Does gargling with warm salt waterbefore bed have benefits?

A6         2 AnswersShambhu Gupta, former Retired ScientistAnsweredApril 2

It definitely has some benefits.

Warm dilute solution is a strongcoagulating agent. It will dislodge any
food particles sticking with teeth ,gums, tongue and throat.

Mouth will feel fresh at bed time and willalso feel much better in the
morning.

Warm salt solution also decreases any viralload in your moth.

If you have bleeding gums then this willdefinitely help both to stop
bleeding and to generally increase dental hygiene.

I do it myself and I have seenthe benefits of this simple practice.

They're most often used for sorethroats, viral respiratory infections like
colds, or sinus infections. They canalso help with allergies or other mild
issues. Salt water gargles may beeffective for both relieving infections and
preventing them from getting worse,as well.

Q7         What happens to sodium in a saltwaterpool?

A7         Bernard Peek , former Research Chemist at Beecham
Products(1973-1975) Answered July 14

Chemistry 101

Elements combine to form compounds. Compounds aredifferent from the elements
they contain.

Sodium is a soft silver metalthat tarnishes almost instantly when exposed to
air.

Chlorine is a yellow-green highlytoxic gas,

Sodium chloride is a whitecrystalline solid compound made from an equal number
of sodium and chlorineatoms. It is not toxic and is essential to most forms of
life.

But to answer the question youactually asked, if you throw a lump of sodium
into a pool of water, salty ornot, it will instantlyreact generating hydrogen
gas and a lot of heat.

The sodium will melt and float tothe surface where it will zip about supported
on a cushion of hydrogen gas andsteam. The hydrogen maywell catch fire and
could explode, flinging lumps of burning moltensodium in all directions.

2ND ANSWER- Ritwik Sunny, former CustomerSupport Executive at Ashok
LeylandAnswered Tue

Electrolysis happens by sendingelectricity through salt water (sodium chloride,
or NaCl), which interacts withthe chloride ion in the salt. This creates
chlorine in the water, and a veryhigh-pH byproduct called sodium Hydroxide. The
now-chlorinated water flows intothe pool, and voilato the surface where it will
zip about supported on acushion of hydrogen gas and steam. The hydrogen may
well catch fire and could explode, flinginglumps of burning molten sodium in
all directions.
