Q1            What is normal in Mongolia, but weird in other places?

A1            Anand NyamdavaaUpdated January 16

The first time a foreigner saidthis to me, I didn’t really think much about it.
But I kept hearing this fromforeigners, so I started noticing. Foreigners,
especially Asians, would often wonder why Mongolian kidsdon’t cry much. Once I
started having my own kids, I would look atkids from other countries and
compare. They did really cry less, sometimes muchless.

When my kids play games and fall, the first thing I would automatically say is:
Өөрөө унасан хүүхэд уйлдаггүй.Which means don’t cry, ifyou fall yourself.Kind
of its your own fault that you fell, so don’t cry. This is repeated to
allMongolian kids, both boys and girls. So kids from very young age
understandthat they will get no sympathy for crying, so they don’t.

You would rarely see Mongolianparents hugging and kissing their hands or legs
looking concerned. You wouldrather see mothers saying: Өөрөө унасан хүүхэд
уйлдаггүй

Q2            Does boiling water work as efficiently to put out a fireas cold
water or even room temperature water?

A2            Bill Conway Worked atInstitute of Electrical and Electronics
Engineers Fri

It doesn't matter the temperatureof water. Water deprives fire of oxygen and
also cools it.

Q3            What social changes have you experienced in yourlifetime?

A3            Gopalkrishna Vishwanath Have always been interested inHistory,
once I didn't have to learn it formally Fri

(774 words in this long answer)

I am now 72 years old. These aresome of the changes I have witnessed or
experienced in my lifetime.

WhenI was young a family usually had one earning member. Usually, it was a
malemember and the head of the family. He supported his wife, his children
(mostlymore than one child, often 5 or even 6 children), and sometimes his
agedparents too. Today many families have two or more earning members. Both
husbandand wife earn and support fewer children (sometimes just one) and
stillstruggle to manage.

WhenI was young educated people read a lot of books. There was no TV,
nointernet, no computers, no smartphones, and no social media. We learned by
reading, askingpeople, visiting libraries, or listening to the radio. Today
reading asa good habit is low down in the list of hobbies of the younger
generation.Reading books has become strenuous for the eyes. Attention spans are
short. Most people are unwilling to read more than one page. They want visual
andinstant gratification. Theylike to see still and moving pictures and listen
to sounds. Not read. Itis in evidence right here on Quora. Long answers with a
lot of text find notakers. Answers with pictures and memes are being lapped up.

WhenI was young a joint family was common. Today joint familieshave almost
disappeared. I see only unitary families consisting of a man, hiswife, and his
children till the children become adults and move away.

WhenI was young arranged marriages within one’s caste were the norm. Today,
theyare still existent but not the norm. Intercaste marriagesand love marriages
are becoming more common.

WhenI was young people rode bicycles because they could not affordcars or
two-wheelers. Todaypeople ride bicycles for exercise.

WhenI was young people from villages desired to go to the cities fora better
life. Today many people want to leave cities and live in less crowdedsemi-rural
places to escape from stress, noise, and pollution. I am myself anexample.
After 44 years of living in Bengaluru, I was happy to move out toDevanahlli, a
semi-rural small town 40 km north of Bengaluru. When I wasyoung I used to go to
rural areas for a change. Today I visit Bengaluru for achange.

WhenI was young people ate without being too diet conscious. Today people
arediet conscious and count calories. We ate more natural food. Today we
areeating more packaged or fast food.

WhenI was young we drank water from public taps and nothing happened to us.
Iremember getting down at stations when traveling by train, filling water
frompublic taps, and drinking them without fear. Today we trust only bottled
water.

WhenI was young we played outdoors most of the time. We played indoors only
whenit rained. We never played after dark. We studied or slept. Today
youngstersare playing more indoors.

WhenI was young we knew who our neighbors were. Today our neighbors
arestrangers.

WhenI was young, getting married was not difficult but gettingdivorced was
difficult. Now it is the other way about. By the time peoplereached their
mid-twenties, they were married. Today many in their mid-thirtiesare still
unmarried.

When I was young adult children respected their aged parents. Today oldparents
respect their adult children.

Family sizes were large. Today thefamily size has shrunk. 6 to 8 members per
family was common. Today the size is3 to 4 members. There was a readiness to
have children during our time. Todaycouples are reluctant to have children.

60percent was a lot of marks. We got “first-class” and we couldproudly strut
about as a top student. Getting jobs or admissions was no problemif you had
60%. 70 percent was considered “distinction” and getting 80 percentwas
considered outstanding. Today who cares for 80 percent marks? You’ve got tohave
99 percent to be considered outstanding. I passed my matriculation examwith 70
percent, my intermediate with 72 percent marks in PCM, and my BE(Hons)with 75
percent, and my ME (Structures) with just a first-class and nodistinction. I
had no problem getting admissions or jobs. Imagine my fate if Ihad got those
marks today.

Reservationwas just 15 percent for SCs and 2.5 percent for STs. Total
reservation wascapped at 17.5 percent. The rest was for the general category.
There was nosuch word as OBC.

These are some that I could readilylist. I could write a whole book on this
subject. But I will stop now. Iwelcome readers to add to this list in the
comments section or by writing theirown answers.

Edited to add Chandra PrakashJaishanti’s comment and my reply.Comment from
Chandra Prakash:

In every case, People miss old daysas those were better and wants to return to
earlier times and think that periodwas luxurious.

My reply:

Don’tyou miss the BC era? I mean “Before Corona”? Only those who have lived in
thepast can truly assess and compare. We did not have all the modern
conveniencesbut we did not miss them as we never knew about the possibility of
having thesefacilities we now enjoy. I am sure health was better those days.
Stress wasless. The competition for anything and everything was not so
cut-throat.

Q4                    What is the science behindthe heat from cavitation
bubbles, specifically from mantis shrimp? How is ithotter than the Sun?

A4            Yong Jian-Yi,PresenterUpdated July 16, 2019

Cavitation is formation of a vapourwithin a fluid like seawater, this is
generally produced by high pressure (suchas a claw swishing through it) The
bubble collpases in the relatively higherpressured fluid producing shockwaves
that are of so energetic, that for a briefmoment in a very small space it
exceeds the heat of the sun. It isn’t going toburn you or kill you. You won’t
even notice the light produced from such anevent (Sonoluminescence - Wikipedia)

Basically the swish of a mantis shrimp is so fast and energetic thatproduces
cavitation bubbles in seawater that collapses so violently that lightis
produced. from that light, we can deduce that it is energetic enough
toapproximate the temperature of the sun.

Q6            How do professional swimmers avoid cough and cold as theyspend
most of the day in water?

A6            Bala Senthil Kumar Sat

Immunity.  When your body is exposed to certainconditions on a regular basis,
you develop immunity. As simple as that.

That said, if the water is suddenlya whole lot colder than standard competition
conditions, many professionalswimmers will face the same issues as anybody else.

Unless you are Putin of course!

Q7    Why do we need to refrigerate something after it's opened? Whathappens to
that thing when it is opened?

A7            James Byrd, Medical Research Answered10h ago

When it was sealed, it was hot andgerm-free.

When you open the food at roomtemperature, it will be cool enough for any germs
that are introduced to growand contaminate the food.

In the fridge, the cold temperatureskeep germs from growing quickly.

Soil physics is the study of soil'sphysical properties and processes. It is
applied to management and predictionunder natural and managed ecosystems. Soil
physics deals with the dynamics ofphysical soil components and their phases as
solid, liquids, and gases. Itdraws on the principles of physics, physical
chemistry, engineering, andmeteorology. Soil physics applies these principles

Q11         How you will save spacein a room?

A11          There are a lot of waysto save space in a room. The most common is
having a functional hangingstorage cabinets, shelves. Design their
configuration according to whatever youneed to store, with a height that will
not hit your head. There are also a lotof furniture now that have dual or more
purpose, like a coffee table that hasstorage under and a top that can be lift
that will also serve as a workingtable.

There are good Sofa beds too. Youcan also have a folding table either working
table or dining table. There arefolding beds too.

You can also get a wall fan orceiling fan instead of floor or desk fan.

T.V’s can now be hang on walls. Ithink you can find a lot of option in the web.
I hope this helps.

Q12          Why if I take a fist of soil from the ground and put itback again,
that spot becomes dry but the rest remains wet?

A12          5 Answers TheiventhiranKanthia, former RetiredAnswered 19h ago

It is simple. When the soil istight it will be slow for the water escape as
vapor. Once you take it out andthen restore, the soil will be in a loosened
condition and it will be easierfor the water content to extricate itself as
vapor.

2ND ANSWER- Gregory Benson, Master of Science Geology, Universityof Arizona

When the dirt is in placeoriginally, it was in capillary contact with the
surrounding soil. When it isremoved that contact is broken and whatever water
evaporation that takes placeis not replenished by capillarity. Result: drying.

3RD ANSWER-Gadepalli Subrahmanyam, Consultant in VariousFields

Soil gets consolidated due tovarious factors; rain, trampling by humans,
gravity etc.

When a fistful of such consideredsoil is removed and replaced, it becomes
de-consolidated and thus whatevermoisture is there, evaporates .

If you dig up earth and make aclean hole, and put back the earth dug into the
same hole, there would be amound formed . Doesn’t it?

4TH ANSWER- Kyle Stan Answered 14h ago

Because you broke the “structure “of the soil.Soil structure describes the
arrangement or the way of soil in thesolid parts of the soil and of the pore
space located between them. It isdetermined by how individual soil granules
clump, bind together, and aggregate, resulting in the arrangement of soil pores
between them. Soil has a majorinfluence on water and air movement, biological
activity, root growth andseedling emergence. There are several different types
of soil structure. It isinherently a dynamic and complex system that is
affected by different factors.

More air holes are built by takingout soil from a place and refilling the same.
In fact one would have observed, there would be SURPLUS after filling. This is
due to air filling in the spaces

Q13          How long does it take to heat a pool?

A13  5 Answers Peter Valters,Played over 300 courses worldwide Answered
September 15, 2020

Many factors are involved such asoutside temperature, size of pool, size of
heater. Typically I count on 1degree Celsius per hour when pool is covered. We
do have a 400k BTU heater andif not overly cool out, can raise it as much as 3
degrees per hour.

2ND ANSWER- Ed Sirett, Heating Engineer, Rental property manager,EV☺Answered
September 16, 2020

How big? Indoors or out? Howheated?

I got involved in the heating ofthe pool at a ‘health’ club I went to. It had a
small pool about 6m x 4m x1.5m, at one point it had to be drained and refilled.
Do the sums and you willfind that a 24kW typical domestic boiler will take the
water from 15C to 30C inabout 25hours, but of course once you have a large toom
full of luke warm waterthere are considerable evaporation losses. Therefore it
took 2–3 days and thereaftergood chunk of boiler’s capacity was keeping the
room tropical and evaporatingmany litres a day.

3RD ANSWER-John Beatty, Evening Adult Instructor (2018-present)Answered21h ago

How big is the pool? What temp isthe water? What is the heating capacity of
your heater? A gallon of waterweighs 8.34 pounds. It takes one btu to raise one
pound of water one degree. Sotake the gallons of the pool times 8.34 times
temperature difference of what itis to what you want which gives the btu
amount. Then divide that by the outputheating capacity of your heater (in btu
per hr). That will feel you hoe long onhours it takes. And how many hours your
expensive heater will run! Also, thisdoes not take into account heat loss if it
is cool outside, but that takes alot more math.

4TH ANSWER Andy Lee, Homeowner with in-ground pool for 17yearsAnswered
September 17, 2020

Depends on your heater output, thestarting temperature of the pool water, the
ending temperature of the poolwater, and the ambient temperature. I have a
properly sized heater for a 31,000gallon pool and it took a good nearly 8 hours
to raise it from 65–80+ degrees Fin the late fall for a pool party. Plan on
many hours. It’d also turn theheater off once it gets to the desired temp
because the water will retain theheat for longer than the “play time” in the
pool. Even though my pool uses anatural gas heater, it’s still very expensive
to heat the pool and is why wedon’t do it very often.

5TH ANSWER-Gopala Krishnan, former Assistant General Manager1996-2004 at
Department of Telecom (1966-2004)Answered 7h ago

A pool has a limited area. Thewater would be hot when the temperature is above
40 degree in day time. If oneget in to the pool in the afternoon it would be
well warm.

However there are HOT WATER SPRINGSwhere the water would be very warm at all
times, without heating by sun’s rays.
