DIVINE INFORMATION PART 80
Respected friends,
While goingthrough one of my external memory device, I came across some good
information stored from websites. I thought ofsharing interesting ones from
them as a series.
In part 80, I amstarting with 295th item in this posting. Kindly note the
series is a compilation.

295 Vasishta and Ravana
Once Ravanarequested Vasishta to teach the Vedas but the latter did not comply.
Embittered by this refusal,Ravana captured and imprisoned him, not worried
about therepercussions it could create.
Kuvalayaswar, a Kingof Surya Vamsa helped Vasishta by liberating him from
Ravana.
Infuriated, Vasishta cursed Ravana that heand his genre would be obliterated
by the Kings of Surya Vamsa. ( KambaRamayanam - Yudhha Kandam ).
Lord Surya had awife Samgna by name, and through her a son called Yama and a
daughter calledYami or Kalindhi were born.
Samgna unable towithstand the resplendence of Surya requested her friend Chaya
to look afterhim and left on a pilgrimage.
Chaya dressedherself like Samgna and surreptitiously served Surya. In the
process Chaya gave birth to Sanaiswaran( Saneeswaran is not the correct name as
he is not Eshwaran. In Sanskrit, Sanaiswaran means'moving slowly'. Of the nine
Grahas he is the slowest, staying for 2 anda half years in each Rasi before
moving to the next one) and Thapthi, a daughter.
296 Vasistha and Samvaranan
Samvaranan, a King of Chandra Vamsa, ruled his counrywith Vasishta as his
Raajaguru.Once he handed over the responsibility of the Kingdom to Vasishta and
went tothe forest to do penance. As he was riding in a forest , he saw a Deer
andstarted chasing it.
He reached a lotus pond where beautiful maidens ( apsaras)were playing near
the pond. Surya's daughter Thapthi was also in the group.Both Samvaranan and
Thapthi fell in love instantly.
AsSamvaranan was looking at her with unrestrained passion, he fell off the
horseand fainted.
Thapthi felt sad andher friends took her back home. Meanwhile the Ghandarvas
who were nearby, helped Samvaranan regainconsciousness. Samvaranan love
stricken, returned to the Kingdom. Buthis mind and heart were still with
Thapthi, and so suffered from lack of sleepand hunger.
Vasishta, whoobserved the King's state , through his sensory powers ('Gnana
Dhrishti'),understood the reason for the King's behaviour. By his Yogashakthi,
Vasishtaflew to the chariot of Lord Surya and informed him about their love.
Surya gave his consent happily and sent Thapthi withVasishta. The Sage
arranged for their wedding and blessed them.
Lord Surya blessed his daughter and at a later stageturned her into River
Narmada - which flows from Vindhya mountains towards theWest.

297 Vasishta and hisson Sakthi
Vasishta was living with his son Sakthi and his wifeAdhrisyanthi in his
ashram. Oneday when he was away, King Kalmakshapadhar, a descendent of Ishwaku
vamsa, whowas on a hunting trip was passing by sage Vasishta's ashram. Sakthi
came outand both the King and the sages's son waited for the other to respond
out ofego and arrogance. The Kingannoyed by Sakthi's indifference lashed out at
him with a whip. An enragedSakthi, cursed the King to turn into a demon.
Sage Viawamitra whose relationship withVasishta was contentious at that time,
released a demom called Kimkaran in theKing's body.
Kalmakshapadhar in a mood of revenge swallowed Sakthi andhis ninetynine
daughters.
When Vasishta returned to the ashram, he wasapprised about the tragic
incident. The sage grieving for his son, forgot the Dharma Sastras he hadlearnt
and attempted suicide. But his soul did not part with the himand so he lived in
the ashram with his Daughter-in-law Adhrisyanthi.
298 Parasara- Grand son of Vasistha
One day he heard avoice chanting Veda mantras clearly and he was curious to
know from where thesound was originating. Adhrisyanthiinformed him that it was
Sakthi's son growing in her womb, who was chanting themantras.
Vasishta feltalleviated to know that his vamsa had not been destroyed, shed his
suicidalthoughts.
It so happened thatKalmakshapadhar at another time, swallowed Adhrisyanthi.
Vasishta who reachedthe ashram on time, relieved the King of his curse and the
latter got back hisform.
Adhrisyanthi in due course gave birth to a son, whobecame the famous Maharishi
Parasarar.
He had developed an apathy towards the Asuraswho were responsible for his
father's death and wanted to annihilate the wholeAsura vamsa. So in order to
fulfill his vow he performed a Yagna . Many Asurasfell into the Yagna fire and
died.
To mitigate hisanger Vasishta counselled him thus- "My child, Do not harbour
such ager inyour heart. What harm did they do to you’
Your father was destined to die because of his fate. Eachone has to suffer for
his deeds.
The fame and thepower you have attained from doing your Yagnas will be
destroyed by your anger.So calm down and stop this Yagna".
Thus Parasarar'sfomented emotions were appeased by Vasishta and his anger was
abated by thetimely counsel from Vasishta.
Musukundhan, son ofKing Manthatha, who after his father's death was crowned as
the king, fought abattle against Kubera once. Kubera sent an army of Asuras to
defeat him.Musukundhan sought the help of Vasishta and the Sage with his power
of penancehelped Musukundhan to defeat the Asuras and become victorious in the
battle.
My note- A grandson by name Parasara to sage Vasistha is a new information to
me.
