Q1              Whydon't we see other stars which are a thousand times bigger
than the Sun?

A1              Viktor T. Toth IT pro, part-time physicistJuly22

Let me answer witha specific example.

The star Betelgeuseis indeed almost a thousand times bigger in diameter than
the Sun. It isinsanely big. If it replaced the Sun in the solar system, not
only would itsvolume encompass the orbits of all the inner planets, it would
reach almost allthe way to Jupiter.

So why don’t we see it except as a faint dot inthe sky?

Because it is far, far away. Specificallyit is more than 40 million times as
far as the Sun.

That means thatdespite being as large as it is, it will appear 40,000 times
smaller indiameter compared to the Sun.

And yes, intrinsically it is about 10,000 times brighter than the Sun. But
again, because it is so far away, it still appears about 100 billion times
fainterthan the Sun.

In short: other stars are barely visible not becausethey are not large (some
are much larger than the Sun) but because they areinsanely, insanely far away.

Q2              Howmuch science does astrology and numerology hold?

A2              Annie Stevens 31m ago

It is considered a science because the predictionsare based on vibrations. In
the world ofnumerology, a vibration is associated with a particular object.
Numerologiststhen interpret these vibrations to energies and reflect on the
energies. Yearly predictions based onVedic astrology are more accurate and
reliable than those based on Westernastrology.

Q3              Doesa married daughter share equal responsibility to take care
of her aged parentslike sons, according to laws in India? After her demise,
does her husband andson also share the same responsibility?

A3              Bhuvana Rameshwar Former Teacher,August 13

Yes.. Son, dil, daughter, sil, grandchildren all are bound by law. Both son and
daughter andfamilies are bound by law to take care of their parents as per our
Indian law..Maintenance and Welfareof Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007 is
a legislation, initiated byMinistry of Social Justice and Empowerment,
Government of India[1]toprovide more effective provision for maintenance and
welfare of parents andsenior citizens.

As per this law theson, dil, daughter, sil and grand children are bound by law
if not morally toprovide for their parents, grand parent if they are one of the
legal heirs orsole heirs of the senior peoples’ property, other wealth, money,
jewels etc.

This law was put forth to ensure they are takencare of, their properties are
not snatched away, sold bydeceit or force before they give away or die. This
law protects their wealthand life.

So if a daughterdies, the sil, grand children become heirs of the senior
citizens. Thus ittheir duty to atleast give the seniors a monthly amount for
their maintenanceand welfare. This law also helps to provide for any old
relative of the seniorcitizen, who lives with them like a widowed aunt.

Q4              Isthe light better than darkness?

A4              Darshan 007 Answered 3m ago

It depends onwhether you need light or you can work in the dark.

Q5              Cana snake recognize you as a human?

A5              Ken Saladin Former professor ofanimal behaviour August 15

Snakes aren’t taxonomists. They wouldn’t, in anyway, think “That’s a human” or
“That’s a cow.”

They merely behavein different ways according, first, to their genetics and
instinct; snakespecies vary in temperament, particularly aggressiveness or
defensiveness.Presumably this has to do with the evolutionary history of their
habitat andhabits—what does the species eat; how many natural enemies does the
specieshave, and what kind?

Then superimposedon this is a certain degree of learning. From its experience,
snakes (at leastsome of them) may come to differentiate the other large
organisms in theirenvironment: This one is harmless. This one is dangerous and
might try to killme. This one, I don’t know—better be cautious; back away or
threaten it ifnecessary. This one, I associate with warmth, food, fresh water,
andgentleness.

Snakes smell with their tongues, and I expectthey’re probably odor
generalists—sensitive across a broad spectrum of smells, not specialized to
smell only a few things like an insect is. Conceivably tome, a pet snake might
be able to distinguish its usual handler from otherpeople by smell.

Even if you’re its usual handler, it may sense adifference between how you
smell when you’re just come in all sweaty and mustyfrom yard work or tennis,
versus how you smelljust out of a bath.

Snakes don’t have external ears and don’t hearairborne sounds very well. They
have an inner earconnected to their lower jawbone, and hear substrate-borne
vibrations byholding their head against the substrate. I think it’s
questionable whetherthey could recognize an individual person by his or her
voice, but they mightrecognize your proximity by your footsteps.

Even I know Dianeand I sound very different in the way we walk around the
house—differences inthe vibration of the floor. If a snake lived with two
people, one of whombrings food and water while the other stays more distant, or
is associated withrougher or more timid handling, it might learn to distinguish
the approach of its caretaker fromothers.

Snake vision is good enough to stalk some prey and defendthemselves. In
evidence, some arboreal(tree-climbing) snakes visually stalk birds on branches,
and a coiled snake on the ground, whether venomous or not, turns its head to you
if you walk around it.

Some snakes see better in the ultraviolet andinfrared regions of the spectrum
than we do; IR is sensed by pit organs inpythons and pit vipers, not with their
eyes. Most sites I’ve glanced at suggesttheir vision is too poor to tell one
person from another. (Surprisingly, evencats reportedly can’t tell one person’s
face from another, but distinguish usmore by how we smell, sound, and behave
than by facial recognition.)

Q6              Whatwas the biggest revelation that came to you in your older
life?

A6              Bhuvana Rameshwar married forthree decades Updated August 13

Youth went away asdependent of parents. Both our parents were very strict and
having enoughpocket money in youth was impossible. Even our choice of subjects
to study, ourhobbies were under our parents control.

Middle age went in family care, saving for child 'seducation, wealth for child
and for our own self- reliant future. Time justflew away with just a few
pleasures, once in a while. A foreign pleasure triptook us almost 18 years to
fulfil, we were so busy working in our jobs and withour family
responsibilities. My husband went abroad often but on very busyofficial trips,
not for sightseeing. We didn't go as I had my job and our sonhis school.

Many of mycontemporaries belong to a generation that saved more as we were left
with lessresources by our parents who had more children. We were born in the
baby boom era 1946 to 1964, whenchildren were more in a family. Ours is the
last generation whichadjusted and fended to both the previous and the next
generation, yet takingcare of ours, even if at some personal sacrifices.

Thus many of mycontemporaries spent a life full of sacrifices, but now when
they have time andmoney, children are well settled, they have landed with
health issues and areunable to play their life ‘s second innings well.

Luckily for us we are quite healthy, being sciencepeople and took care of
health and diet. Ofcourseage related body pains do trouble us especially at the
joints. Most of ourtours in and out of India were in the recent five-six years.
Google says Ivisited 15 in these years.

What is the biggestrevelation that came to me in my later years…

We needn't havesaved so much. The next generation is smarter. Our children can
earn and savefor themselves. We needn't save for them. A little is enough, a
house and some fds.

We should havetaken more vacations for family time. Yes, we should have spent
more on these.

We should haveenjoyed our younger years with more pleasure trips, luxurious
life and takenlife easy. A foreign holiday was never in our minds then . We
could have boughta bigger car or a bigger house in Ooty for personal use may be.

What ever we earnwe are bound to leave them behind, we might as well use it,
enjoy it. We couldhave raised our standard of life much higher if we wanted .
But we felt guiltyliving a lavish life!

We should haveenjoyed our lives in younger years more instead of sacrificing in
the name ofour parents, children, our jobs, society and savings. We should have
taken moreday offs and longer leave from jobs.

Q7              Whydoes our stomach hurt after we eat?

A7              Dr.Anita Sharma, A.M.O at H.P.Govt (2004-present) Answered 12m

One of the mostcommon cause is gastritis or gastric ulcer. When food come in
contact with thelining mucosa ,gastric juices, acid is secreted to start the
process ofdigestion and as the mucosa is already unflammed the acid further
hurts and wefeel pain…And the patients tries to avoid food..So proper
medication isindicated..

Q8              Howtraditional are you in this modern times?

A8              Bhuvana RameshwarFormer Teacher,August 9

I was a modernperson in my teenage itself. But after marriage and life in
Chennai and stayOoty did change me.Let me see how traditional I'm or how
tradional I'm not .

I go to localtemples may be once in two months and big famous temples, out of
town once ayear.

I don't wearbangles at home as I do all work, without a maid. I wear bangles,
rings, watchonly when going out.

We pray everyFriday at home and we are vegetarians on Fridays and Amavaasai if
I remember. But if we are out of the house or on a tour I do not follow the veg
rulestrictly.

I go to big templesin silk salwars /saris. Local temples in salwar kameez not
in jeans.

I make most traditionaldishes. What I don't know I buy from a sweet shop on
festival days. They makethem better.

I do not exchangeDiwali plates or other festival dishes with neighbours like
vada for vada, laddu for laddu etc. Instead give a Diwali treat to our watchmen,
maids,sweepers in our apartment.

I celebrate allimportant festivals but leave out a few, unimportant ones.

I do not fast onfestival days nor on other days. Fasting makes me lack
concentration on mywork.

I keep my mangalsutra in the house when I go formy morning walk. Fear of chain
snatchers.

I remove my toerings everyday, during my morning walk as it hurts my toes in
the walkingshoes. My feet are widening, due to age I suppose.

I don't trouble my dil to fast or follow any ofour rules. She is pious on her
own. May be more thanme. No dress restrictions on her except for shorts which
thankfully she doesn'twear.

Q9              Isthere a direct way to convert heat into electricity without
the use of boilingwater?

A9              3AnswersC.S. Reddy, lives in Hyderabad, Telangana,IndiaAnswered

You need to convertheat energy in to rotational mechanical energy for producing
the Electricity. For that matter any other source ofenergy need to be converted
to rotational mechanical energy in conventionalform. you see now the solar heat
is converted to Electrical energyby photo voltaic conversion.

2ND ANSWER- Peter Harris, studiedPhysicsAnswered 31m ago

That is what the internal combustion engine does. The fuel is ignited, the rise
in temperature raises the pressure and thecrankshaft goes round and round.
Attach a generator and hey presto! you haveelectricity.

Q10            Howdo I prepare a fine batter for dosa? How much time does it
take to ferment?

A10            Bhuvana Rameshwar Smart cook, not hardworkingTue

For dosa, soak riceand lentils for 5 hrs.Rawrice, boiled rice, urad dhal and
some tuvar dhal in the ratio of 3 : 2 : 3/4 :2 tbsp. Soak them together after
washing.

Grind into a smoothbatter after 5 hrs. Add salt and let ferment until the
batter rises. It usuallytakes 6 to 7 hrs.

So if you soak riceand dhal overnight, you grind in the morning the next day,
have dosas byevening for dinner.

Or soak them earlyin the morning, grind, ferment and make dosas next day for
breakfast.Once it isready to make dosas use a heavy old tava or a heavy
nonstick tava to makecrispy dosas.
