SLEEP- URAKKAM Dear friends,
Though I wentto sleep yesterday night a little late after talking with my son by 11 PM, Igot up early morning. Somehow I felt the sleep was sufficient. Today I thought my topic can be about sleep. Sincerely, Gopala Krishnan 25-8-21 1 Nap andsiesta. A small period of sleep after meals in the afternoonis called siesta, though small period of sleep in day time is generally callednap. 2 REM sleep Sleep when dream comes is called REM sleep. Mostly onewakes up after a dream. I am in the habit of looking in the clock when I get upand refresh after a dream. Some days we get more dreams, many days no dream.Within seconds most part of the dream is forgotten, though some incidents indreams remain in memory for years without forgetting. 3. Drinkingwater. Most persons are in the habit of drinking water aftergetting up from sleep in the nights. Many keep water bottle by the side of cotitself, so that he can drink water within seconds when hiccups or thirst appear. 4. Why drinkingmore water in night. Though people drink water in day time, empty stomach, during meals and tiffin, after taking sweets etc., still in general many drink more water in the night. Many may be consumingwater along with tablets, a little more in the night. 5. Washing faceand apply holy ash I have read long back an answer by KanchiSankaracharya that if one sees fearful dreams and wake up, a suggestion, towash face and apply holy ash and again go to sleep so that such fearful dreamsdo not repeat. 6. Prayerbefore sleep It is a custom for prayer with all familymembers in Christian families. During boyhood days my father has taught me manyprayers and one before sleep. That prayer is in Tamil language Hari ennu Paapotten, Achuthaanda ennuthalaynaipotten, Govinda ennupaditthuden, Kuttam onnumvaralakathu, Nalla pozhuthuvitiyanam, Nalla seithikekkanam Swmai Bhagavane Katthu rakshikkanam. Though on those days, I could not understand what is Hari,Achuthanda, Govinda, later on studying/ reading I understood they are other names of Lord Mahavishnu. The prayer ends with requesting a Good morning withgood news and requesting the almighty to make him live without any sort ofdifficulties. 7. Bed storiesand sleep With bed time good stories and stories making onelaugh, children go to sleep quickly. As one grows up, for many reasons sleepmay not come if at all one is comfortable in all respects. Any number oftimes counting stars in the sky including not so visible in the galaxy, anynumber of times counting goats, waves from sea, nothing doing- sleep would notcome. 8. Doingexercises. Doing exercises with leg may bring sleep for many, butfor some, sleep would not come. 9 Writingpoints It is the habit of many to keep notepad and pen, sothat some points suddenly coming to mind to note down. Unless they write, thepoint would not come later. At one time I was keeping such notepad. 10. Sleep anywhere A cousin brother visited me while returning to ourhome, after a visit to Nagerkovil, while I was in Trivandrum. I made arrangementswith all washed bed sheet etc. items in the bed room. He said, he will sleep inthe hall, what he requires is one bed sheet to spread in hall. He put his towel in chest, went in to sleepwith in minutes. He said, he cannot sleep with all comforts in a bed room. 11. Naps I get naps in day time, early night etc. While Iprepare some posting, I could not resist sleep; I keep my laptop in sleepposition. 12. Dreamsabout elephant and snakes. If elephant comes on attack in dream, offering is madeto Lord Ganapathi. Such dreams disappear. If snakes appear, offering is made toNaga temple, dream disappear. 13. Pithrusappearing I have heard pithrus appearing in dream and sometimessuggesting something. Among Brahmins pithrus appear in dream telling they arehungry. Most probably it could be about srardha not performed withoutbreak. If an ailing person sees his deadparents calling him, mostly it is considered that it is time for departing hissoul to reach them. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Thatha_Patty" group.
