SPECTACLES –MOOKKU KANNATI

Yesterday I went to an optical shop for checking thepower of reading glass and
if necessary to replace the same. The ophthalmologistfirst checked the power
with computer, then manually replacing glasses in aheavy frame kept on my nose.
He asked me to read lines in a paper and lettersappearing in a reflected mirror
image and decided the power. Eye Power hadbecome lesser.  I gave him a frame
withglasses for replacing with fiberglass for newly calculated power. He
tookadvance and said glass would be ready on 1st September. While givingthe
acknowledgement I took another spectacle to read the same. The receptionistjust
like that asked – Sir, how many spectacles are with you?. I answered threeand
said, after the first one got replaced with new power glass, I would giveothers
also for replacement of glasses.

He asked about diseases like diabetic, BP etc.  While checking the power of
glasses. It wasseven years back I had cataract operation. I still recollect the
blessings sentby Sri Narayanaswamybefore operation.

I thought I may write about spectacles today.  History of spectacles,
revolution in thefield etc. I am requesting Sri V Sridharan Trichy to make in
his response. Thisis a general write up just for reading.

Sincerely,

Gopala Krishnan 29-8-21.

1.  Interesting case report.

While investigating a major  theft, police could gather three people
wereinvolved and the chief wore  contactlenses. In a fortnight thieves were
caught. How to decide the chief?

Immediately one constable came with idea. Sir,generally males wearing contact
lens are very less. So if one wears contactlens, he may not be able to wear
spectacles on the nose and supported in earlobes. The chief many not be having
perfect ear lobes to support spectacles.

Yes. One of them had no ear lobe on right side, and inno time police questioned
and he admitted he was the chief.

2.  Girl wearing contact lens

While seeing girls for my son’s marriage, I  still recollect a beautiful girl
from Chennaitold us- Uncle I am wearing contact lens of power -9. If I remove
contact lens myeyesight would be very poor. For many reasons I did not settle
that marriage.

3.  Reading glass in pocket

I still recollect many kept a circular reading glasswith a frame around it with
a hole, theglass   about the  size of magnifying class. A string wasattached
to the frame and string end was  clipped in the pocket. For reading they
wouldtake and read with oneeye, either left or right.

4.  Reading glass in villages

In my home during my boyhood days , having no opticalshops, there was a
Bbhagavatham Panickker, who might  bring about 20-25 framed spectacles
ofdifferent power glasses. Those requiring spectacles , might  collect the one
most suited to them. Thisincluded women. On those days there was no difference
in frame for women.

If any of them was  not suited to a person, he would bring another20 sets after
a week. He was getting then from Quilon, if my recollection iscorrect. On those
day’s spectacle   frames were appeared either black, brown usingplastic  or
metallic white colour onesusing stainless steel. A person not having more than
one spectacle was rare.Necessity  for another spectacle was notthought of.

5 Chleswaram,chaleswaram

I was about 40. In my officers’s room I could not readsome smaller prints. My
officer exclaimed as above and asked me to test theeyes immediately. I was
working at Krishnagiri in Tamilnadu. I went to eyedoctor, he tested the eye and
prescribed -2 power glasses. Haha- My vision wasclear with spectacles. I never
felt necessity of another pair of glass on thosedays. Always ensured I am
having my reading glass with me.

6 Anotherspectacles.

Once I forgot to take back my spectacles, afterworking in office. Next day was
Sunday. I could not spend time, readingnewspaper or magazines was difficult.
Onthat day itself I ordered for another pair of glass again after visiting
eyehospital.

7. Longdistance and short distance spectacles

After retirement I found difficulty in reading the busnumbers in Chennai. So
after test in eye hospital I got three spectacles, onefor reading, one for long
distance vision and a third one combining both,

8 Golden colourmetal frames

It became a practice to wear golden colour metalframe, which gave an
aristocratic look. Instead of glass, fibre glass appeared.Advantage of fibre
glass- It would not break.

9. Washingglass

Irrespective whether it is fibre or glass, periodic, washing with good water,
gives more clarity using spectacles. Or smearing withfine cloth.

10. Spectaclecase or pouch?

I prefer pouch to case. Just by touching pouch I canmake out, I have taken the
spectacles. Case is safer to spectacles, but one hasto open and see. There
areexperts, just by seeing the weight of the case, they might know
whetherspectacle is inside.

11. Brokenglass

One day, while I was in Salem, I found the accountsofficer came with
brokenspectacle glasses. My officer asked the reason-  He said it had  fallen
from his  own hand, and he has already  ordered a new pair. Till the new
spectaclesobtained, he had to manage with it. He was advised broken glass
should not be worn, purchase a nearby powerready glass if available. Some
optical shops have readymade powerglasses. If we request, nearby power glass
they would give.  Next day he came with a new spectacle.

12 Pen typespectacles.

These are small spectacles in fibre, cheap, comingwith fixed power. These
started appearing by 2005’s. Finding one of myrelatives wearing the type   I
asked the cost. He replied Rs 100-00. It comes withcase and put in pocket. Only
reading class. Immediately I purchased  Two.

13. Cataractand power glass

Technical details I am not sure, after removing cataract, required power glass
is placed inside the eye. After operation only small powerglass is required.
Sometimes no glass is required.

14. Spectaclesin the present day scenario.

Most might have at least three numbers of spectacleswith different frames.
Presently most prefer fibre glass, though some preferglass, for perfection. If
the frame is costly and good, many replace powerglasses. Present day frames are
very costly starting from 2000-00 rupees.  While working in garden I wear
spectacles forPROTECTION.
