TUBE LIGHT

Dear friends,

I was busy in the domestic front forthe last few days. Yesterday the lathe
worker was calling his edupiti (assistant)as tube light when he could not
understand what he was telling.

The lathe worker was welding newtin sheets in the damaged portion in the front
gate of my home. By calling tubelight he meant assistant was not able to
understand immediately. At that timeitself I was thinking of writing about real
Tube light.

Tube light was called by eldersin my younger days as Banana stem light since it
appeared as 4 feet bananastem. Earlier days even new tube lights flickered a
few times and then only glowed.People often if switched off a tube light used
to switch the same on only aftera few minutes. A look in to tube lights. Other
than a nostalgic reading nothingmore is meant.

1Suspended tube lights.

On earlier days the tube lightwas only suspended from roofing using two numbers
hollow rods and connectingwires were taken through it. The rods were screwed to
frame work. The frame hadprovisions either to have two tubes or single tube on
holders. Tubes had diameterabout the size of a banana stem. The standard size
of tube was 4 feet. It had electricalchoke and starter.

Whether it was home or officetube light was suspended on those days.

2. Starter- a condenser

For starting the tube light astarter was required. While the tube light glowed
starter had no use. On this accountin offices if a starter was faulty, the
technical staff might take a starterfrom a working tube light and put it in
another in which starter was faulty.  The fault condition was often checked by
shakingthe starter. If it produced noice, it might have become faulty.

3. Electronic choke.

With the introduction ofelectronic choke, starterbecame unnecessary. Wiring
became simple. Choke replacement wassimply removing a few screws and
disconnecting wires. Putting new choke andscrewing, keeping connecting wires.

4. Wall fitting tube lights

In homes and offices where necessarywall fitting tube lights appeared. First
versions, the tube lights were fitted ontwo round blocks without touching
walls. These types of fittings we can seestill in temples.

5. Two feet fittings and slim tubes.

Gradually slim tubes startedappearing. Where four feet fittings cannot be
provided two feet fittings wereprovided. Cost of both were almost same

6. Introduction of holders

Two holders are fitted n wallsand fittings are simply inserted in to it and
connection is given from ceiling rose.Very simple work.

7. Detection of faulty tubes

Detection of faulty tubes is seenby seeing flickering of tubes or not glowing.
Faulty tubes 70% might havedarkness in the ends.

8. Introduction of LED tubes.

LED tubes come with fitting. Visuallyone can see only tube and a frame. Frame
is simply inserted in to the holder inthe wall and connection given. One year
warranty is given and in Chennai costis about Rs 400-00.

9. Present scenario

Most electricians prefer replacementwith LED tube.  Electrical shops stillhave
smaller diameter tubes, electronic chokes for sale. Not totally changed toLED
tube light fittings.

10 Home reserves

Most homes keep reserve ofswitches, tubes, chokes, tube lights and LED tube
light fittings. Especially onSundays most electrical shops are closed. Our
kitchen tube light waits for Sunday evenings to flickeror not glowing.
Difficulty cannot be told in words to get an electricianon Sunday in our area.
