Sincerely, Gopala Krishnan 06-09-21 316 SRIMADH BHAGAVATHAM India knows many PURANAS OR STORY BOOKS, but this collection ofstories is generally accepted as being the most complete and important. Thebook, arranged in twelve so-called cantos, comprises 335 chapters with about 18000 verses..It is that collection of stories which stresses the prime importance of themaintaining aspect of God personified by the transcendental form of Lord Vishnu. The writer of this book isnamed Krishna Dvaipayana Vyasadeva, also called Badaryana. He is the Lord, the bhagavan, amongst the philosophers, who inIndia assembled all the holy texts. He compiled the Vedas, also known as s'ruti, containing the basic wisdom, themantras for the rituals and the hymns. He as well wrote the Mahabharata, which is the greatest epic poemin the world. It describes the history (itihasa)of the great fall that the vedic culture once made. TheBhagavad gitais the most important part of it. Vyâsa also wrote the rest of the eighteengreat ( purânas) of India as well as the Brahma-sûtra, his masterpiece onthe Absolute Truth. The representative ofVishnu on earth is named the Fortunate One in this book. We know Himspecifically by the names of LordRâma and Lord Krishna. The Fortunate One is thus the Lord who isknown in different forms or incarnations, but also the devotees are part of Hisreality and are also called bhâgavata when they are pure. Thus there is the Lord in Hismany appearances, the devotee with as many faces and the book. They are allcalled Fortunate. Fortunate means to be of the opulence, or to carry, or liveby, the fullness of God's riches, beauty, fame, power, knowledge anddetachment. VyÃsa was a grandfather of theKuru-dynasty. He lived a very long time. His long duration of life enabled himto write the story of the Fortunate One and all the other books. He had a sonby the name of S'ukadevawho handed the message of this Bible down to another member of the family,Emperor ParÃkchit, whohad difficulty respecting the classical wisdom. This emperor is the model forus normal people who seek their stability in the wisdom. This knowledge wasconveyed by S'uka in disciplic succession (paramparâ), to those who teach by example (the âcâryas),the science of devotional service (bhakti). This transalation , was brought by the Vaishnava, the Vishnu-monk, Poojaniya Swami A.C.Bhaktivedanta Prabhupada 317 SriMadh Bhagavatham.... part… 2 A FEW OF THE GREAT SANCTITIES OF SRIMADH BHAGAVATHAM Srimadh Bhagavatham is teachings are ever new and everinspiring. Meditation on the divine life of Sri Krishna iselevating. Meditation charms away the sorrows of life and helpsrealisation of the God of Love ? Krishna. Chanting of Krishna's namespurifies the mind. Constant remembrance of the Lotus Feet of Sri Krishnapurifies the heart, dispels evil, and nourishes true love and supreme wisdom. Saints are the best and the noblest amongst men, forwithin the sanctuaries of their hearts, Krishna, the Soul of souls, isconstantly meditated upon. Suta Pauranikarwas twice blessed, since he at first imbibed Srimadh Bhagavatham personallyfrom Suka Brahmam, who wasexpounding the holy text to Parikshit during the last seven days of Parikshit1searthly existence and again recounted Srimadh Bhagavatham in the concourse ofthe sages led by Sage Saunaka at the Deerga Satram, which was inprogress at Naimisaranyam. Srimadh Bhagavatham is the essence of the Vedanta. Srimadh Bhagavatham is very dear to the lovers of God Srimadh Bhagavatham is studied by the spirituallyenlightened with reverence. Srimadh Bhagavatham contains truths, which are indeedpure and they purify all, who touch them. Srimadh Bhagavatham frees from all evils and alsoinstructs in wisdom all those who read or devoutly listen to its exposition. PREFACE The eighteenth, the last, the holiest and an epitome of all the Puranas, Bhagavathamis recognised as the final authority on divine and scriptural matters, afterthe Vedas, Upanishads and Gita. In this, Dharmahas taken refuge after LordKrishna relinquished His Incarnation. In this, is the secretthat even the most abstruse philosophical truths are expounded most lucidlythrough absorbing episodes. It contains all the proceedings of theAvatars, lives of Sages, devotees and kings. It instills in thehearts of men, Love and Devotion of God. Divine Love delivers menfrom all Evils and Impurities. By its extensive exposition, it has kept and iskeeping alive all over the country, the spiritual tradition and brings withinthe reach of all, the peace which can better be experienced thanexplained. Its study is the best way to become acquainted with theliving religion of India. Listening to it pleases God themost. Worship of this is equated to the worship of Lord Krishna and confers the four Purushartas, namely, Religious merit,Earthly possessions, Enjoyment and Liberation. Even the presence ofthis text, wards off evils from the precincts, in addition to such auspiciousaccretions. SrimadhBhagavatham was composed by Sage Vedavyasa,a part manifestation of God, at the instance of Brahmarshi Narada. It was taught by Vedavyasa to his infantson-turned-sage, Sukabrahmam, knower of the Supreme. He, in turn, for the first time narrated itin a Sapthaham (seven days), onthe banks of the Holy Ganga, inthe assembly of sages, to Parikshit, who renounced kingship in pursuit of religious merit. Parikshit wasthe son of Abhimanyu/Uttara and grandson of Arjuna/Subadhra. It isan elixir for attaining the highest goal on earth. It is known as Paramahamsa Samhitha (Book ofGod-realised Souls). SrimadhBhagavatham came into circulation in the world through the narration by Ugrasravas, known as Suta Pauranikar. He wasthe son of Sage Romaharshana, who had gained mastery over Sri Mahabharata and all thePuranas under the aegis of Sage Vedavyasa. The narration was made to the sages headed by sage Saunaka, who wereengaged in a thousand year long Dheergasatra,a sacrifice in the holy Naimisaranyam, famed for numerous sacrifices. SutaPauranikar was amongst the sages present at the bank of the Ganga, whenSukabrahmam expounded Sri Bhagavatham for the redemption of Parikshit. God bepleased.
