Q1            Why do concrete blocks have holes?

A1            JasonAlmendraMost Viewed Writer Architecture28May19August 15

The holes are fornoise and heat insulation. You can also put a few steel
reinforcing barsthrough the holes. Concrete blocks are not load bearing. Steel
reinforcedconcrete pillars and floors should take all the weight. I prefer
hollow clayblocks.

My note- The hole has negative effect also. It is a weakpoint in construction.

Q2            An electric bulb is marked “3 amps”.What does that mean?

A2            AdamAlbanowiczAnswered 2h ago

That means themanufacturer has tested it and its normal maximum draw is three
amps.

But before you jumpfor joy and add extra lamps all over, electricians are
required to treat everysingle lamp socket in your home as a 100 amp electricity
user..no matter whatit is marked. That is one reason why we have to use 100 and
200 amp breakerboxes instead of smaller.

My note- In India we mark a bulb with  watts for it’s brightness

Q3            How are bridges built when water isin the way?

A3            VicPowellProfessional Grammar EditorJune 29

Same way you’dbuild a fence. Dig a hole, though in this case, they dig a hole
in the water.

>From there, it’sstraightforward to put down the columns, put cement around it,
>and build therest of the bridge on all the columns. After the columns are
>down, they put thewater back.

My note- I have seen in Kerala in my home, a newbridge was constructed in my
student days. During summer they erected the largepillar. Water was directed
through one end of the river and pillar work startedin the other end.

Q4            Why did the desert produce manyancient civilizations, but there
were few ancient civilizations in therelatively rich rainforest jungle?

A4            MattRiggsbyMA Archaeological Studies, Boston UniversitySeptember

Not just deserts.River valleys passing through deserts. Five of the six known
pristinecivilizations (that is, independently invented complex urban societies
withoutapparent influence from other civilizations) appeared along river
valleyspassing through deserts or other relatively arid regions: Mesopotamia,
NorteChico/Caral in Peru, the Nile, the Indus, and the Yellow river in China.

Why? The contrastsand constraints in such regions appear to be important. The
immediate environsof the river are a great place to live. No shortage of water,
good land for farming, and easy transportation up and down stream for trade and
communication. But geta little farther away and you’re in the
nigh-uninhabitable desert. Nobody wantsto live there. So, then, as population
densities increase, there’s moreinterpersonal and inter-group conflict because
nobody’s willing or able to justwalk away to avoid annoying neighbors. One
potential solution to that problemis to create complex societies. Hierarchical
social institutions can adjudicatedisputes, keep track of which land belongs to
whom, and so on.

In regions likerainy jungles or simply reasonably well watered temperate
regions, thoseconditions don’t apply. There are a lot more sources of water,
tolerably goodplaces to farm, and so on. The population can spread out more,
and if there aredisputes, there are more places to walk away to. The pressures
which arise indesert river valleys aren’t as intense, and so civilization is
less likely toappear.

But not impossible. There are six known pristine civilizations. Five of them
(above) more or lessfit that description. But the sixth is the Olmec of
southeastern Mexico, aquite fertile, well-watered region. We don’t know why
things happened thereyet. While there are trends in human behavior, there are
no universal rules.

Q5            Is it better to have an open windowor a ceiling fan?

2 AnswersJack MizzerAnswered 1h ago

No question .. anopen window. A window will let in fresh air while a ceiling
fan simplycirculates the air that is already in the room. I vote for fresh air
every time.

Arthur W. Corbin, Teacher, Hero, LGBT Activist,Historian, Writer,
SpeakerAnswered 20m ago

You need both anopen window (air, light, and a view), and a fan (push air down
to move heatfrom the ceiling to the floor, and pull air up to move heat from
the floor tothe ceiling) for comfort.

Q6            Will orangutans or gorillas everevolve?

A6            ClaireJordanDegree in biology and folklore;programmer, shop
owner, secretary on newspaperSeptember 6

They have evolved, into orangutans and gorillas. If they survive they will
continue to evolve intobetter orangutans and gorillas, to the point that in a
few million years theymight no longer qualify as orangutans and gorillas.

If you mean, willthey evolve into something similar to humans, probably not,
unless we goextinct and leave that niche open. Being human isn’t some kind of
goal, justone of the twigs on an ever-branching tree.

Q7            What is one thing you want to sharethat might be useful to others?

A7            YashPatil Design Engineer Updated Sun

Ever thought Why isthere an empty space on packet of Tablets ?

1)This is an emptyspace on the packet as the tablets should not mix with each
other and thereshould be no chemical reaction. At the same time, when drug
dealers move drugsfrom one city to another, they are afraid of breaking down.
This fear isreduced by having space on the packet. This space is similar to the
CushioningEffect for drugs and does not damage the drug. Not only this, the
space is alsokept for printing the name of the medicine well. So that there is
a good placeto print.

2) You may havenoticed that some packets contain only one pill. The packet is
enlarged so thatfull information of such a tablet can be given on it. That is
why it isnecessary to give empty space. In addition, space is provided to
prevent damagewhile cutting or removing the medicine packet.

Q10          Is there any reason why economy classpassengers can't use the
first- or business-class toilets?

A10          StephanieV United million mile flyerMarch 28, 2015

If you're askingwhether the first class toilets will magically detect your
economy classbuttcheeks and burn them with acid, no, they won't. But speaking
as someone whois about to board a 13 hour flight to Asia, I booked a business
class ticket becauseI wanted a more comfortable trip, which includes a more
favorable ratio ofpassengers to toilets than you'll find in the main cabin.
Business and firstclass passengers are paying for comfort. That's why the
flight attendantspolice access to the toilets in the front of the plane.
CAPITALISM!

Q11          What causes sparks in electricalwiring?

A11          3AnswersHoward Wrightson, Auto Technician (1986-present)

Answered 3h agoShort circuiting. Sometimes, if the live wire from an outlet is
touching theneutral or ground wire, it can cause a short circuit. This can
causesignificant heat as more power is drawn.

Moisture.Electricity can travel through water. That means if there is moisture
in thewalls or on the outlet cover then there is a chance of arcing through
thatmoisture and creating sparks.

Overloading. Whenyou have too many appliances plugged into the same outlet
there is a risk ofarcing. This is compounded in older homes that have only a
few breakers servingmany outlets.

Old outlets. Itisn’t just age, but use. If you are constantly plugging things
into the sameoutlet, there is a chance that that outlet will wear out.

Improper repairs. It happens, especially if the person who repaired an outlet
wasn’t qualified.Make sure you have an electrician work on your house.

Currant draw. Ifthere is something in the circuit that is turned on and you
open the circuit, you will see a spark. If nothing is turned on, there will be
no spark.

Good answers sofar. Since sparks in electrical wiring often present a fire
hazard, I suggestyou have an electrician check this without delay.

Q12          Which Indian town/city washistorically significant yet remains
largely unknown today?

A12          HarshitRajo Lives in New Delhi (2017–present)June 25

My city definitelygets a spot in this list. Situated on the bank of River Ganga
it’s a cityknown(unknown now :p) for experiencing crucial historic events that
shaped thehistory of India. Buxar is the city I’m talking about.

It’s relevancedates back to the time when Lord Rama visited this city with
Lakshman and SageVishwamitra and went on to kill demoness Tadka. The town even
today carries onthe legacy of Sage Vishwamitra. We also have a popular college
after his namein the town.Fast forward to medieval era ,1539 Battle of Chausa
which wasfought between Mughal Emperor Humayun and Afghan Chief Sher Shah Suri
in whichthe latter emerged as victorious. Chausa lies in Buxar district about
10 milessouthwest of it.

Moving on to themost famous incident which took place in 1764 which shaped the
history ofentire subcontinent i.e. Battle of Buxar which took place between
Nawab ofAwadh and Bengal and Mughal Emperor on one side and British East India
Companyon the other side. What happened after this is well known !

The famous Katkaulika Maidan where this battle was fought.

Today the citymight not be in news regularly but it is historically rich and
full of positivevibes. Do give it a visit once : )
