Q1 Why are West Godavari Telugu peoplelighter in skin color compared to other Telugus? A1 KandasamyWickramabaskaran Masters in PPWS PathologyPhysiology and Weed Science & Genetics and Heredity, Virginia Tech(Graduated 1985)Updated June 19 The study found anew SNP that was also significantly associated with skin colour in the Indianpopulation. HYDERABAD: Why doIndians have different skin colour, ranging from wheatish to light black? Theskin colour in India changes from region to region. Scientists at theHyderabad-based Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB) have decodedthe secret behind the variation in the skin colour of Indians . They have established a genetic link to tocolour difference. The CCMB team ledby senior scientist Dr Kumarasamy Thangaraj in collaboration with EstonianBiocentre, Estonia, and five other research institutes carried out extensiveskin survey of about a thousand individuals from across 27 populations toarrive at the fact that it is genetics that determine the skin colour. Theresearch study was published in the latest issue of The Journal ofInvestigative Dermatology. "We have doneextensive epidemiological survey of 1167 individuals belonging to 27populations and quantifiedmelanin content at most exposed and low exposed area of human body at themiddle region of Gangatic plains(Uttar Pradesh and Bihar), andselected 374 individuals for the first round of genetic study", said DrAnshuman Mishra, the first author of the study. According to the researchers, there is a genecalled SLC24A5 that is known to make skin lighter. The gene explains about 25-38% of the pigmentation differences betweenEuropeans and West Africans. The research team analysed the entire gene andfound another variant (rs2470102), which contributes to skin pigmentationvariation in Indian subcontinent. Further analyses revealed that both thevariants (rs2470102 and rs2470102, discovered earlier) together could betterexplain the variation in skin colour among Indian populations than consideringeach variant independently. The team also found that social structure definedby the caste system has a "profound influence on skin pigmentation".The skin colour was found to vary significantlyamong ethnic groups and social categories studied. The researchers thencompared the skin colour (phenotype) with the genetic variation (genotype) ofthe individuals. Those with derived (mutant) alleles had fairer skin comparedto those who had old (wild type) alleles. "Our studyclearly reflects the profound influence of the strict marriage patterns andmulti-layered endogamy adding further to the variation in skin colorcontributing to the mosaic of skin tones" says Chandana Basu, one of theresearchers. With regard to thecaste-colour concept, the team also studied 1,825 individuals belonging to 52diverse populations across India. It found that, social category and associated SNPs (single nucleotidepolymorphism) explain 38.4% of the variation in skin color. UnlikeAfricans and Europeans, we do not have homogeneous skin colour throughout thecountry. This could be dueto different waves of human migration into India and recent admixture of allIndian populations, which we predicted in our previous study that it could havehappened about two thousand years ago, said Dr. Thangaraj. "This is yetanother effort of CSIR-CCMB in the field of genomics, which helped us inunderstanding the genetic link to the skin colour," said Dr. RakeshMishra, Director, Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology. These are stepsthat point to the era of personalized medicine based on link of genomicfeatures with disease susceptibility and drug response. Such studies, at verylarge scales, will be needed to establish individual specific lifestyleadvisory and medical prescriptions as it is clear that "one size does notsuit all" is also applicable to the area of human health and disease, DrMishra added. Q2 What is the effect of turmeric onhigh blood pressure? A2 LuciaGarcia Worked at Hospitals September 12 High blood pressurecan cause various diseases, such as heart disease, stroke and even kidneydisease. Therefore, blood pressure must be checked frequently and make sure itis at a normal level. Turmeric is rich in curcumin. 100 grams ofturmeric contains about 3 to 6 grams of curcumin. Curcumin is anatural antioxidant that has the effects of lowering blood pressure and bloodlipids. It hassurprising benefits in regulating blood pressure. In addition, curcumin has strong anti-inflammatory properties, Curcumin can effectivelyremove nitric oxide and free radicals in the blood, which is very beneficial tohealth. Q3 If meteorites have been landing onEarth for billions of years, why hasn't the Earth had a net increase in mass inthat time? A3 DavidDennis live male Wed According to thissource the Earth loses an approximate nett 50,000 tonnes a year. According to somecalculations, the Earth is losing 50,000 metric tons of mass every single year, even though an extra 40,000 metric tons of space dust converge onto the Earth’sgravity well, it’s still losing weight. And The Earth’s core loses energy, since much of it isconsumed in a planet’s lifespan, but that onlyaccounts for a loss for about 16 metric tons per year. The biggest mass losscomes from escaped hydrogen and helium, which escape with 95,000 metric tons ofmass and 1,600 metric tons respectively. These elements are too light to staypermanently in the gravity well, so they tend to escape into space. Q4 Was it ever proven that there was asun inside of Earth? A4 ThomasKolb Astrophysics September 23 No it isnot a “sun” inside the Earth, but a completely different structure. Actually, the very heart of Earth is a sphere of solid iron and nickel (sometimes abbreviatedNiFe), 2 400 kilometers in diameter. The temperature here is 5000–7000˚C, whichis about as hot as the surface of the Sun. The pressure is however so high thatthe metal remains solid and does not melt. Outside this solid core is a layer of molten iron, steadily flowing in the opposite direction of the rotation of the Earth. These two iron layers rotating around each otheracts as a dynamo, generating a massive magnetic field, stretching out from theEarth’s core and far out into space.Besides giving the planet a magnetic north and south pole, this field alsoprotects the planet from the Sun’s blasting stellar wind, which otherwise wouldstrip off Earth’s atmosphere. This intense heat inside Earth is a residue fromwhen the planet originally formed and is expected to staymostly unchanged for the entire life span of the Sun and the solar system. My note- So it isnot fully by the outer core magnetic metalscreate earth’s magnetism Q5 I’m working at State Bank of India. My branch manager pressurizes me for YONO registration. I have recently joinedmy job. How do I deal with this? A5 AvishaWorked in Banking sector for 3 years Wed Gone are the dayswhen banking was about only operations. Private banks havea reputation of pressuring their staff for cross selling but the truth is thatwith the advent of technology, there is bare minimum operational work left forthe human beings to do.Hence cross selling comes into play which does require ahuman touch. Your BM is just pressuring you just for YONO rightnow, later you'll be pressured to cross sell insurance products, as well.Itis a part of the job and you'll get accustomed to it. And if not, then look foryour options. You cannot avoid cross selling in banking sector. Q6 Why are more water and fertilizersharmful to plants? A6 4Answers Shriya Answered Thu More water andfertilizers can be harmful as it block air pores and spaces in soil and decrease theavailablity of oxygen in plants and fertilizers increases salt concentrationwhich can damage some beneficial soil microorganisms! 2ND ANSWER-Saurav KumarAnswered Thu We know that excess in every field can harm.Everyone needs a limited amount of anything. Plants also need a limited amountof water. Each plant has different functions and different surviving processes. Some plants need fewamounts of water while others need an excess amount of water itdepends on the plant to plant how much water is needed. We discuss above excess in every field can harm andwe know fertilizers are made up of chemicals itincludes acids and basic chemicals that neutralize our fields and maintains theph level of the field. If our field's soil is excess in basic nature then weneed an acidic chemical that neutralized the field's soil and if we use acidicchemicals in excess amount then our field gets acidic and we need basicchemicals. So we use limited amount of any fertilizer in our filed. We know that excess in every field can harm.Everyone needs a limited amount of anything.Plants also need a limited amount of water. However, applying too much fertilizer can be aproblem because it leads to the release of greenhouse gases and eutrophication Overwatering, in simple terms, drowns your plant.Healthy soil allows for oxygen to exist in the space between particles of soil.If there is too much water or the soil is constantly wet, there is not enoughair pockets. This results in a limited oxygen supply and plants are not able tobreathe Q7 Are there snakes that are morevenomous than cobras? A7 SquirrelFrenzy Wed Yes there are butfor this let’s go to the top meet the inland taipan the worlds most venomoussnake. Measuring in between 6.5 to 8.5 feet strikingmultiple times and very rarely dry bites it’s venom is 50x more potent thenthat of a king cobra and a single bite can put 100 adults in the dirt without immediate medical attention will kill you in about 35-45 minutes However is quite ashy snake and would rather get away and save there precious venom for when theyhunt And where will youfind this slithery serpent of death non other than Australia Q8 What is the difference between wattsand volts? A8 DaveLarsen 17 years, industrial electricianFebruary 2, 2014 Voltage is like thepressure in a garden hose with a hand operated spray nozzle at the end. Even when thenozzle is turned off there's still pressure in the garden hose. Even when a light is switched offthere's still voltage in the energized portion of the circuit. Current is like therate of flow of water in the garden hose, say how many gallons per minute aremoving in the hose. When the nozzle is turned off, there's still pressurizedwater in the hose, but there's no flow. When alight is turned off the electrons are still in the wire, but they aren'tflowing -- there's no current. Power is like theproduct of pressure and flow rate. If you were spraying the water into abucket, it's like a measure of how quickly the bucket is filling up. If youhave a big hose with lower pressure, or a small hose with high pressure, youmay have the bucket filling at the same rate (if the numbers are right). Electrical power isthe product of voltage and current, and it's measured in watts You could have alight bulb operating at 50 volts and 2 amps of current... 50 volts x 2 amps =100 watts You could haveanother light bulb operating at 25 volts and 4 amps of current. 25 volts x 4 amps =100 watts Even though thelight bulbs have slightly different construction and are hooked to differentenergy supplies, both would be burning 100 watts of power, and both would havethe same brightness. My note-LED bulb with low watts and Normal bulbs with highwatts can be another example. Q9 If the self is just an illusion, whohas achieved enlightenment if there is no self? A9 JayJennifer Matthews Silence Enthusiast September 12 Ramana Maharshi’sfather died when he was 12.He heard people crying and talking about his fatherhaving passed. The deathwas recent and the corpse well-preserved, so he thought his father wassleeping. He pointed to thecorpse and said: My father is sleepingover there. His relativesexplained that his father is gone and only his body is there. Most of us wouldjust accept this self-contradictory statement. But Sri Ramana hada logical mind. He thought: All this time, Ithought my father was that body. When a loved onedies, we believe they’re an astral body that left the material plane. But Sri Ramanarealized: What ‘leaves’the body was never there to begin with. When you break abowl, the space ‘inside’ isn’t liberated. It’s seen to be identical with the surrounding space. At age 16, hecompletely abandoned the ‘I am the body’ idea.He didn’t say he was liberatedbecause he was never trapped. No one attains enlightenment - infinite Spiritsimply is.
