Q1           What aresome truths about medical school?

A1   Sumya Hasan Studied Medicine and Healthcare (Graduated 2017)February 23,
2018

Only one “truth” sticks out for me…

No matter how hard you worked to get in or how badly youwanted to be a doctor
when you were applying to med school, you are 100% goingto question why you
chose to pursue the degree.

And that means havingmoments where you freak out over the amount of debt you
will have over something you “don't want to doanymore”, thinking the work load
is either too hard or not what you thoughtbeing a doctor was about, being
jealous of friends who chose to pursue degreesthat aren't as long or time
consuming and then of course there are the momentswhere you think “but I wanted
this so I could help people. Why does it feel like I'm doingnothing of the
sort?”

This is a truth that veryfew people have the luxury of preparing for before
they begin their medicalcareers. Frompersonal experience, the faster you accept
that your opinion about medicinewill fluctuate, the better.

These thoughts aredaunting. But they are a part of the process

Q2           Why is abanking job better than any other government job?

A2           Alankar Parida Associate at State Bank of India (SBI)Thu

I think the reverse is true. Banking sector has more vacanciesthan other
government jobs but that does not make it better.

When people fail to clear other exams like UPSC,SSC, RBI, Insuranceor GATE they
choose banking sector.

The salary is somewhatless in banking sector compared to the hard work bankers
put in. For bank officers work-life balanceis also poor due to long working
hours and frequent transfers.

Still bank job is better than any ordinary private job.

Furthermore, the Solar system is set up in such a way toshepherd asteroids and
other such interstellar objects away from the earth.

Q4            thecheapest most filling food in your country?

A4           Himank Gupta MBBS, AIIMS Bhopal (2015-2020)September 23

I think most Indians, especially Delhites, will agree with meon this-The
legendary, thealmighty-Rajma Chawal

Besides being a staple food combination in homes in NorthIndia, you can find
cheap Rajma chawal combo in restaurants for as low as ₹40–50.This tasty combo
fills you up nicely and one doesn't need to eat any othermeals before dinner if
they eat an adequate quantity in lunch.

Of course, the experience is just multiplied if you mixconcentric cut raw
onions along with this.

And do I need to tell about the HEAVENLY combination of JEERARICE, rajma and
raw onions with small touch of lemon?

Q6           Why isthe ocean blue but water transparent?

A6           Steve Dutch Retired geoscience professor; 36 years August 16

Water is blue.

This is the deepestdive pool in the world, 60 meters, in Dubai. There is no sky
colouring the pool.

A few inches of water is transparent but you can begin to see thecoloration
after filling a bathtub.

Water absorbs infrared and a bit of it slops into the visiblespectrum. So water
alsoabsorbs red light, making the water weakly, but definitely, blue.

Q7           How doesan airplane that weighs lots of tons go up in the sky?

A7           Geoffrey WiddisonBeen learning sciencesince I was six, still
getting started. September 21

First of all, there’s never been an airplane that weighs“thousands of
tons”.Large aircraft may weigh in the hundreds of tons (small aircraft can
weigh lessthan a single ton). As far as I’ve been able to tell, the heaviest
aircraft inthe world is the AN-225, which weighs about 700 tons. But aircraft
(even themonster, heavy-duty ones) are deliberately designed to be as light as
possible,for obvious reasons.

Still 700 ton is a lot. How do they go up in the sky?

With these:

That’s a progress D-18T jet engine. It’s capable of 230 kN of thrust, which is
equivalent to 23,000 kg. TheAN-225 has six of them.

Now, that’s not enoughto lift the plane directly, but when moving horizontally,
it’s enough to kick the plane up tohigh speeds. And the airflow across the
wings at those speeds creates enoughlift to raise the whole craft.

The interesting thing about air pressure is that, if youhave a big enough
surface (which you do, on the wings of a large aircraft, evena small pressure
difference between the bottom and the top is enough to createhuge lift.

Those engines provide the speed, which creates a pressure difference, which
lifts the aircraft.

Heavy as the plane is, it’s big enough, with enough power, todo that.

Q8           Is itlegal to pay a one-month house rent to a broker?

A8           Prasanna BhaleraoI have some experience in real estate deals.
September 19

Broker charges 1 month’s rent from the landlord and onemonth’s rent from the
tenant as broker fees. This is perfectly legal.

The broker is not doing charity. This is his business.

If one does not like to paybrokerage, one must find a property to rent on own
and deal directly with thelandlord.

Q9           As anorganism grows and repairs itself, does the number of its
cells increase?

A9           Ken SaladinFormer professor of histology (microscopic anatomy) Fri

Yes, they have toincrease in number. Withexceptions such as some nerve and
muscle cells, the cellsof an adult aren’t larger than the cells of a juvenile.
The difference in body size is is due to a difference in cell number, notcell
size.

In humans, though, the difference in fat and muscle massbetween late childhood
and adulthood is due to increases in cell size, as fatand skeletal muscle cells
don’t divide. If we get fatter or more muscular, it’sbecause our existing cells
got larger. I presume the same to be true of othervertebrate animals.

Q10         Whydidn't herbivores evolve to eliminate their predators?

A10         Pascal Morimacil Worker, Thinker, WriterThu

Many herbivores haveevolved ways to fend off predators.

But if you are not going to be an omnivore and eat them, whychase them down to
the ends of the world?

Scaring them off is enough.

Then you can keep on munching on the stuff around you, whichis kind of the main
thing for a herbivore really.

Q11                 Whyis Mars a planet of great interest? It’s always been one
that comes up intopics, movies, etc. more than any other planet? Is there
something that scientistsknow that we don't?

A11         Mats Andersson M Sc. in Physics & Computer Science, Uppsala
University(Graduated 1991)September 27

It’s close, it’s got asolid surface, and it’s got anatmosphere. Wecan’t breathe
it, but it makes the climate a lot less inhospitable.

This isn’t something “scientists” know, it’s something anyonewith a casual
interest in astronomy knows.

If you didn’t know that, there’s probably practically nolimit to the number of
things that genuine scientists know, but that you don’t.I mean, it’s probably
not a particularly high bar to clear.

Q12         In TamilNadu, which colour saree is used for bridal?

A12         Bhuvana Rameshwar Tamil culture and heritage Fri

We have three mainsarees

On the wedding dayduring the marriage ceremony, homam and pooja.

For the post - weddingreception,.. Very grand, silksari of any colour the bride
likes, but they avoid black, dark blues and darkgreen.

For the first night.Usually white sari with a prominent coloured border and
pallu. Usually silk but cotton is alsocommon.

Add to these a new sarifor engagement function. Some wear mother’s sari too on
this day as a blessing. But nowadays engagementfunction ate becoming grander so
now brides get a new sari and often there is aphoto session with garlands,
rings groom in suits.

The bridal sari originallywas a cotton sari with finecheck design in an dark
maroon color or arakku colour. Arakku is a maroon -dark brown colour.

This sari could stand the turmeric, sandal wood paste orkumkum falling on the
sari and staining it. Sometimes even sparks from thehomam (havan) fall on the
sari. It was the most comfortable sari for the heatof homam fire and the long
rituals of the ceremony, usually three hours. Any bridewould be uncomfortable
in the heat and smoke, big crowd on the marriage stage. The groom wears cotton
shirt and dhoti for comfort too.

This saree beingcotton usually stained by sandal paste, turmeric, and kumkum,
sometimes roses from the garland was usually washedbut not used. It will be
preserved and used to tie the baby hammock of thefirst child as it is cotton
and soft.

Some wear in pinkcolour too

Then in my generationwe were made to buy the pure kanchipuram silk version of
this sari, but it cannot be used for baby hammock. Ibought in maroon colour. I
wore one and sweated throughout the ceremony.

Then some modernfamilies changed to bright mango yellow, turmeric yellow, onion
skin colour and even a cotton candy - pink , silksari. These are usually low
cost silk sarees as the fear of various Poojastains is always there. Only for
the post or pre wedding reception girls getsarees from as low as ₹ 3K to as
much as 2 L depending on the fathers ‘ cards.

I however wore a puresilk arraku sari on my son's wedding, my dil wore a
typical traditional cotton koorai sari. I wore the same arakkusari for my
husband's shashtiabada poorthi and our remarriage.

Q13         Why arebanana and passion fruit banned in NZ?

A13         Caroline GlassI am a New Zealander. I have lived most of my life
inWellington and Dunedin September 25

They’re not. However, you may be thinking of a fruit called Banana
Passionfruit, which is a relative of passionfruit that has yellow tubular fruit,
making themlook like a cross between a passionfruit and a banana.

The banana passion fruit plant is considered a noxious weedin New Zealand. You
are not allowed to plant it, andefforts are made to weed them out of our
forests, because they are in danger oftaking over and strangling native trees
in some places.

There’s nothing wrong with eating them, and they can be quiteyummy - its just
planting them that’s illegal.
