Q1           Why is soldering not allowed (or common) for home wiring?

A1           KenWallewein Studied Electronics at Southern Alberta Institute of
Technology (Graduated 1971)Updated November 20, 2018

Nobody seems to havementioned something I learned about reliability of soldered
connections.

I’ve soldered since I was a kid experimenting withelectronics in the 1950s, and
was a firm believer in using solder for nearly all things electrical, although
I didn’t try iton house wiring.

But I was eventually forced to admit that sometimessoldering is WORSE than
crimped and twisted connections.

The problem I found was thatwires tend to break at soldered connections. This
is especiallyproblematic with plugs and wires that need to flex with use. It
was a realhassle. I think there are two reasons:

The flex stress is highat the surface of the solder joint because it is rigid.
To prevent that youneed extra support the wire, so it doesn’t flex at the
joints, and that doesn’talways work well.

I suspect that the heat of soldering tends to make thecopper wire a bit more
brittle at the joint.

Once I switched tousing in-line crimp and twist-on connections, those problems
disappeared, and Ihave experienced zero problems with connectivity when the
connectors are wellinstalled — which means having a proper crimp tool for
in-line connections.

This applies to bothsolid and stranded wire, BTW.

Post edit:

To clarify, the wire breakage I observed on solderedjoints was consistently at
the surface of the solder, where the unsoldered wire meets the soldered portion
of thejoint. I would expect maximum flexion stress at that point.

I do not have equipment that can give a usefulmeasurement of the resistance of
a soldered joint vs. a crimped or twisted joint. But I have observed no
resistance orconnectivity issues with a well-executed crimped connection. It
seems to methat good crimp should break any oxide surface and hold wires firmly
andpermanently in contact, whereas with a soldered joint there may actually
bemore current flowing through the solder, which would not conduct quite as
wellas copper. But I doubt there’s much real difference.

While I can understand why some people may believe that asoldered connection is
better, I suspect it depends somewhat on thecontext. I would generally use
solder inside electronic equipment — partlybecause it takes less space, and
also for quick consistency — but for wiring, Iprefer a well-executed crimp or
twist-on connector. Unaided wire twistsplicing, or even soldered splicing, is
not something I would choose to do if Ihad other options.

I would agree that, as has been said elsewhere, solderingneeds wires to be held
securely to prevent any flexing or vibration afterwards; not as easy as it
sounds. It’s not just a matter of making sure thejoint is secure before
soldering.

Seems to me that wiringinside modern electronic devices tends to be done with
crimped connectors aswell, even when the ends terminate with plugs.

My note- On high current and voltage soldering can melt also. Hence jointed
very tightly.  But they can also get corroded in course of time.Hence the
jointing wires in the outside are periodically replaced also in thecase of
power lines.

Q2           What happens to bond paper if there is an oil stain on it?

A2           JohnBurgess, Former US Foreign Service Officer who's been around
the block (and the world) a few times.Answered July 28, 2015

The paper will become transluscent or transparent underthe oil.

The reason is due tophysics, as explained in this reply at Stack exchange:

The thing is that paper fibers are really transparent (unless the paper has
been painted some color, of course). The onlyreason paper blocks light is that
its fibers are all “immersed” in air.

Try to imagine what youwould see with a very potent microscope: various clear
tubes going in alldirections. What happens to a ray of light entering this maze
of “transparenttubes”? It gets refracted each time it enters and each time it
leaves eachtube. The final result is that light might scatter in any direction,
but it´smore probable to leave by the same surface it entered, that means: back
to you.That makes paper white.

Now, if you fill all this space with a fluid (by soaking paper in said fluid)
and this fluid has a refractive index similar tothe fibers, the light will not
“feel” so much when it passes from fluid tofiber. The end result is that light
will not scatter that much, and the paperbecomes more transparent. The better
the matching between the refractiveindexes the more transparent the paper will
be.

What you are noticing is that oil has a refractive indexthat is more similar to
that of the fibers than water has. Still, water is closer to target than air,
so paper gets abit transparent with water too.

ps: this is also related to your other question ("wetis dark"). If the object
is thick (imagine a pile of paper, or sand). Wetting it will enable light to
penetrate more. Less ofit will be reflected back to you, making the object look
darker.

Q3           Why do vultures not get sick from eating rotten meat?

A3           AmyChrista Ernano Armchair ornithologist; birds fascinate me Wed

Vultures have extremely powerfulstomach acid, as well as very strong immune
systems. This allows them to eat meat contaminated with diseases like anthrax
and rabieswithout getting sick, and in fact, their bodies effectively kill the
pathogens. That's why they're muchmore efficient scavengers than animals like
rats or dogs, which willspread the pathogens, and why vultures are so
beneficial to humans. Theyinhibit the spread of many diseases, as well as
cleaning up carcasses, whichcan prevent contamination of water supplies.

The bearded vulture, or lammergeier, is the king of allvultures when it comes
to the strength of its stomach acid - it isthe only known vertebrate whose diet
consists almost exclusively (up to 90%) ofbone, and it can fully digest even
large pieces of bone in around 24 hours. It'salso an exceptionally beautiful
bird.

Q4         500 rupees a lot in India?

A4           Icon forTravel and tourism Travel and tourism Answered byKaran Tue

Depends if it is therein the left side or in the right side of this picture.

As, the ridge inbetween is not only a geographical division, it also divides
the dreams, aspirations and needs of the people.

So, 500 can be a week's expenditure for someone or it canbe just a tip in a 5
star hotel for the other.

Q5           Does coconut milk make bones stronger and healthier?

A5           LuciaGarcia Worked at Hospitals  October 1

Coconut milk is not high in calcium, but it is rich inphosphorus. 100 grams of
coconut milk contains about 100 mg of phosphorus.

Phosphorus is anessential nutrient for strengthening the bones of the body,
especially whencalcium and phosphorus are combined, it can effectively prevent
osteoporosis.

Coconut milk contains lauric acid, which is known as the "gold of life" and has
antibacterial, antiviral andanticancer effects.

Q6           How does lukewarm water or salty water help for a bath?

A6           HritikaSharma Answered 10h ago

Well, yes, the warmwater opens up skin pores allowing the salt minerals to get
absorbed deep intothe skin, ensuring complete cleansing. These salts help draw
out the harmfultoxins and bacteria absorbed by the skin throughout the day,
keeping your skinlooking healthy and clear.

Q7           What is the best breakfast you’ve hadwhile traveling?

A7           Nandakumar Balasubramanian (பா.நந்தகுமார்) Indian village born man

Once I was travellingto native and we made some items which served as breakfast
on that day. It wasthe best I had so far. It’s simple but was tasty and did not
make me sleepyafter having it.

I made boiled Tapioca(Maravalli Kilangu in Tamil), toastedwith onion and
coconut. Looks like as below but laced withonion and coconut.

Then boiled the eggs. And took Yelakki banana (small banana variety popular in
Bangalore). We startedearly morning and after some time we had this as
breakfast. Each of us hadserving of two bananas, two eggs and the Tapioca
Poriyal. It was tasty, fillingand had good feel after having it. Thanks!

Q8           Why does rice occasionally have worms?

A8           Irfan Shahzad Former Teacher August31

Everyone in Asia knows, you cannot store rice for long(over 1-2 months) at room
temperature. The rice, ALL RICE haslarvae in it. It's a symbiotic relationship.
Unlike wheat (bread, pasta) whichalso cannot be stored at room temperature for
long either, 1-2 months is max.

At room Temperature the larvae are in the rice, and willhatch, and become
maggots, then they will escape the bag somehowand crawl around as maggots
outside and become a cocoon and hatch intomini-moths and die.

The rice is still edible. When you wash it, it's real easy, ALL THE BUGS WILL
FLOAT UP, just rinse like 3 times.

A10         Kanthaswamy Balasubramaniam Lawyer Mon.

You know what you saw!!!So forget what anyone else tells you.

Could be a reflection, could be an optic illusion, Could bean actual entity.

Ultimately go to a Temple / Mosque/Church and pray to god forrelief from any
entity getting interested in you (Even if theres0.00000000000001% chance of
such a thing)Thats it. Nothing else.Dont think of this over and over again.

Q11         Why are jaguars smaller than lions if they are solitaryhunters like
tigers? Wouldn't it benefit them to be larger to take down prey bythemselves?

A11         AmyChrista Ernano I love animals and enjoy reading and learning
aboutthemSeptember 18

Pound for pound, thejaguar is the strongest of all the big cats, and has the
most powerful bite, at2,000 psi — strong enough to bite through a turtle's
shell or a caiman's skull. They are perfectly adapted to their environment and
to their available preyspecies, and are at the top of the food chain in their
range.

In other words, theydon't need to be any bigger — they can already easily take
down tapir, capybaras, deer, caiman, and even domestic cattle, and the larger
they are, themore food they need.

Jaguars are perfect killing machines, even if they arenot so large as lions or
tigers.

Q12         What is the most Indian thing ever?

A12         NishantTiwari Lives in India (2003–present) September 18

Compass an usefulmathematical tool but in india it is used for other amazing
purposes like:

This is used to tiesupplements to the main answer script.

This can be used for writing your crush nameon your hand who says no to you.

This is used to to scribble your majestic name on table so when you come back
after some years you can see it.

This can be used to write your friend's crush name on the tableto mock him.

This is also used to create a hole in a eraser and in the water bottle.

Q13         Did anyone taste osage orange / horse Apple fruit? How doesit smell
and what is the flavor of its latex-like white juice?

A13         MartinBayer Chef (1994–present)October 1

I grew up in South westernPennsylvania, where Osage Orange trees are common. We
had at least a half dozenof them on our property.

We called them MonkeyBall trees when I was growing up, their fruit being the
monkey balls.

These days, nothing eats them, though they are reputed totaste like cucumbers.
I don’t know if that is true and I don’tplan on getting in line to find out
either.

As I said, nothing eatsthem today, but they were once the food of the wooly
mammoths that roamed NorthAmerica about 12,000 years ago. The trees evolved to
become food for mammoths, who would eat the monkeyballs whole, preserving their
seeds and then dropping them far andwide across the countryside.

Problem is, there areno more mammoths and the trees haven’t figured that out
yet. So they’re stuckin the past, waiting for mammoths to return eat their
fruit and spread theirseeds.
