385 SKANDAMIX

The ninth Skanda dealswith the kings who ruled during the supremacy of  the
seventh Manu, Vaivaswata (Swayambhuva),who in the previous Kalpa was
KingSatyavrata of the Dravida country, of the cosmic Fish renown. Satyavrata
wasborn in his next birth as the son of Vivaswan, the Sun-god,  under the name
of Sraddha Deva, known also asVaivaswata after his  father's name. Hereis an
attempt to trace the two famous royal  dynasties, the Solar dynasty (Surya
Vamsa) toVaivaswata Manu, the son of  Sun-god andthe Lunar Dynasty (Chandra
Vamsa), to Soma, the Moon-god.

Vaivaswata Manu hadten sons: Ikshvaku, Nriga, Saryati, Dishti, Karushaka,
Narishya, Prishadra, Nabhaga and Kavi.Ikshvau was the ancestor of
thekings of the Solar Dynasty. The more famous of them were  Kakutstha,
Mandhata, Ambarisha, Harishchandra,Dilipa, Raghu, Aja,  Dasaratha and Rama.

There were also othersubsidiary families of the Solar Dynasty, all descended
from the Manu. Some ofthem were the Mithila kings, known  asVidehas; the
dynasty ruling at Vaisali; Saryati family; the Nabhaga, Nriga andNarishyanta
families. Budha was the son of Moon-god, who       himself was born of the
tears of Blissflowing from the eyes of Rishi      Atri, a mind-born

386  NABHAGAR AND NAABHAGAR

Nabhaga, a son ofVivaswata Manu, had a son by name Naabhaga, youngest and
eminent in learning. As he continued to reside with his guru for       an
unusually long period, Naabhaga'sbrothers assumed that Naabhagha had resorted
to lifetime celibacy - Brahmacharin - and distributedamongst       themselves,
the entireproperty, leaving nothing for Naabagha.

When Naabhagha returned home, he enquired of hisbrothers:  What share of   the
property have you ordained for me  To which, they replied, at that       time,
we forgot.

Now, we offer fatheras your share.  Naabagha  gullibly approached the fatherand
said, the venerable brothers have ordained you as my share (of theproнperty)
and hence you become my      share'. Nabhaga replied to Naabhaga:  O Son! Don1t
placefaith in  the words uttered by yourbrothers. They have deceived you, for I
am      not to be enjoyed as wealth. Still, I shall provide livelihood for
you.The learned Angiras sages are conducting a long-drawn 'Satra' Yaga. The
Abhiplavamsacrifice is to be concluded in six days; likewise Prushtyam Yagam
too is ofsix days' duration. Though the Angiras are eminent in learning, as
they arriveat the sixth day of each       of the twoYagas, they become
perplexed at not knowing the Mantras (in  relation to Viswadevas). You don't
beoverwhelmedwith their glory. You attain to them and initiate them in the two
Sooktas(Mantras), Idhamittharowdram and Ye Yajne Sadakshinaya, to  be chanted
at the close of every six days, relating to Viswadevas. When they ascend to the
heavens at the conclusion ofthe sacrifice, they will confer on you all the
remnants of the wealth.

Naabhagha did likewiseand as he was assembling the leftнover wealth, a
darkish personage (Rudra) descended from thenorth and claimed that wealth
ashis own. On Naabhaga representing that the departing Sages bestowed    it on
him, Rudra said that it was essentialto seek Nabhagha's decision,
whichNaabhagha did. The father replied to Naabhaga, The sages have   ordained
(at Daksha Yajna) that the remnantwealth at the Yagas should go  to Rudra. Also,
as Rudra is Deva-deva, He is the appropriate       beneficiaryof all: what to
speak of the remnants at Yaga .Naabhaga       then returned to Rudra atthe Yaga
site and said, O Lord! O Brahman!

My father Nabhagha haspronounced that the wealth at the Yaga site is
yours. So, I beseech you with prostration. Rudra, devoted to truth, told
Naabhaga,  Forthe reason that your father pronounced the  truth and you also
speak the truth, to you, already learned in the       VaiswadevaSuktha
(Mantram), I shall      initiatethe glorious and ancient wisdom. Further, you
receive from me       the leftover wealth of the Yaga And disappeared.
