CULTURAL QA 10 -2021-13
Being compilation there may be errors Q1 Why do people not like working atSBI? A1 DileepMadhu Former Deputy Manager at State Bank of India (SBI) (2014–2017)Updated 1y I joined SBI as Probationary Officer in 2014 and resigned asDeputy Manager in 2017 even though I didn't have any other job option. I willanswer it from my perspective. The work and HR culture in SBI is what I foundmost difficult to cope with. I felt that I was simply slogging with no purpose.Management there, though unprofessional, is reasonably supportive butassociation plays such a spoil sport and virtually exists to imperil the livesof ambitious officers. Altogether I felt a total lack of motivation and feltthat I was needlessly tortured by a sadistic organization. The salary and perkswere good, but for me, life comes first. There has to be a life in the firstplace, which your salary can hope to sustain. Q2 What are your comments on Indians inthe USA not wearing mangalsutra after marriage? A2 BhuvanaRameshwar South Indian culture Mon When we went to Vietnam (2018) the hotel owner strictly toldme to remove all jewellery including the small ear studs for fear of robberyand even murder of people for the yellow precious metal. I didn't have anyfancy, artificial metal ear studs, so the whole tour I felt so incompletewithout mangalsutra, bangle and ear rings. There nobody wears gold. Only brass, plastic or at the most silver. And Indian tourists are a sure target for bigmoney. In contrast when I was in Tanzania in 1974 I remember youngbrides wearing jeans, t shirt and putting the mangalsutra out of the t shirtproudly exposing the various beads, thali, gold coins etc as decorative pieces! We were shocked to see the thali exposed so. Here in bangalore I remove my mangalsutra every morningbefore I go for my morning walk. Safety first! In most western countries the fear of being attacked togetherwith the western dress code which doesn't go well with the yellow metal makesour dil and daughters remove gold jewellery. Some wear at home, some just keepit safely inside. Gold is a precious metal and Indians are not strong enoughagainst robbers. This is the simple explanation. No point dying preventing robbery. As long as the woman respects and loves her husband the mangalsutra becomesunnecessary. In western countries most single houses of Indians areattacked only for the gold in their lockers and for their cash. Safety first isthe key. Even tourists from India are advised not to wear too many jarring newgold jewellery. Q3 What is the real reason the evolutionof the human brain and intellect suddenly accelerated a few million years ago? A3 ErwinAnciano Former Compulsive Writer Oct 6 Nobody really knows. The three most popular theories are: Use of fire to cook food. This meant the earlyhominids could create nutritious food with easier to absorb nutrients comparedto eating it raw. This enables the brain to get more nutrients and develop intoa more complex organ. Tarzan antics. Swingingfrom vine to vine, treebranch to tree branch supposedly stimulated more brain use, allowing for bettergrowth of the brain. This stimulation of our hands and arms led to furtheradvancements in tool-making. Aliens did it. Some supercivilization from the stars visited our world and accelerated human development through geneticexperiments. My take? #1 is probablythe most likely. A lot ofcreatures live arboreal lives but they didn’t develop brainpower like humansdid. So I am not too sold on #2. On the other hand dolphins and whales developed pretty goodintelligence and they live in the water where you can’t cook your food. So #1also has problems. But this also gives a double whammy to #2, so #1 is stillahead. So maybe #3 really is the best answer, except it sounds waytoo sci-fi. That, or too religiousy. Q4 Can you eat slightly unripe tomatoes? A4 LuciaGarcia Worked at HospitalsOct 5 Unripe tomatoes cannot be eaten because they containsolanine. Solanine is a cholinesterase inhibitor, and animals andhumans can be poisoned after eating solanine. Solanine is very irritating and corrosive to the stomach andintestinal mucosa, and can cause dizziness, nausea, general discomfort, vomiting, fatigue and other poisoning symptoms. In addition, solanine also has a paralyzing effect on thebrain, which will affect the body's movement and respiratory function, andlife-threatening may occur in serious cases. Solanine disappears after the tomatoes are ripe, so the ripetomatoes can be eaten with confidence. My note- This is a new information to me Q5 Do dogs feel gratitude? A5 Walt WellerStudied Computer Science Oct 6 About ten years ago, I forgot to give my dog water for mostof a day. Her bowl was nearly empty when I left for work, and was bone dry whenI got home ten hours later. Ifelt terrible, of course. I realized my mistake, and then, this happened: I filled her bowl and set it down in the usual spot. She walked up to it and took a lick. She then turned around, and walked over where I stood, andlooked up at me with an inscrutable expression. She turned around again, walked back to the water bowl, and drank until the bowl was nearly empty. The logical part of me haslittle to explain this other than that she was stopping to express gratitude. Or maybe she sensed myguilt and wanted to give me comfort. Or maybe she stopped to give me a quietcursing, haha. Until that day, I would’ve told people that dogs can’t trulyfeel a complex emotion like gratitude, but now I feel otherwise. She taught mea lot of lessons before she passed away in 2014 after a beautiful life. Srinivasan AYYAR M.A.Real Estate Facilitator at DhiyaFoundation (2016–present)Sun Q6 What are the best things to considerwhile constructing new home in India? A6 If you arein South India and looking at some Cost & Time saving methods alongwithHealthy lifestyle, then Go for Mud Interlocking bricks construction with goodpointing work, outside double water proof coating and inside exposed brick wallwith multicolored walls depending on your taste or just Terracotta and whiteborder colour walls. Vetrified tiles are not good in the long run and if you haveelders they will get severe knee pain within A year. If I were you, I would gofor 12*12 Terracotta flooring tiles of 15 mm thickness and roofing could beSloppy roofing if you are planning only GF or Fillerslab roofing if there isFF. Windows UPVC or Steel prefabricated windows, Main & Reardoors should be Steel multilocking doors which are impossible to break. Compound wall could be Precast concrete block which can bedone in A day! In the Hall plan A teakwood swing which is very good relaxingthing… My note – I have a swing in the hall. But I dislike talkingany important matter sitting in the swing. Q7 Is it actually cheaper to cook fortwo every day compared to eating out? A7 Sangeeta Iam a FOOD loverSun Yes, very much. I havebeen there so I can say this with confidence. If you eat out on day basis then the expenses would be asfollows. Minimum of Rs. 600 for the complete day's food. Bare minimum of Rs. 100 per person per meal This adds up to Rs. 18000 a month Yes, this is expensive On the other end, if you cook daily at home then cost wouldbe as follows. Rs. 3000 worth monthly grocies (dals, masala and other suchitems) Rs. 1000 per week for vegetables, fruits and non-veg Maximum of Rs. 5000 per month Rs. 2000 for random things (gas cylinder, utensils and otherrandom things that would get exhausted during the month) Now, coming back to your question… As explained above, financially this is pocket friendly. Onan average, two adults may spend Rs. 18000 to eat put throughout the month. If you cook at home andeat then the cost would be hardly Rs. 10000. Now, coming to mental peace part. Cooking at home is mentallypeaceful too. On days when you are too late to order, you will get the leftoverfood to eat. The biryani would consist of Chilli powder only. The dosa would be burnt. The quantity might be less. Now, let's discuss the most important concern of eating out -HEALTH. Hotels add ingredients to enhance taste, color and not health. Baking soda can create stomach related problems Oil can lead to heart related problems in the long term. Ajino Motto - we all know it More over, we are not aware of the quality of species addedin the food. Overall, I would recommendeverybody to cook at home and eat rather than eating in hotels everyday. If you think, cooking is difficult then you should hire acook rather than eating out. Q8 Why is replacing a missing tooth soexpensive? A8 Jay ValenciAdentist and a gentleman Sat I often tell my patients that it's far less expensive to takecare of your existing teeth than to replace the ones you lose. Some listen andsome don't. When I was in dental school some 40 years ago, this was theway we replaced teeth. As you can see, a dental bridge involves preparing andcrowning the 2 teeth on either side of the space. You're paying for substantialdental chair time and the laboratory technician who actually fabricates thebridge. We've come a long way in the last 40 years and today we haveimplants. A titanium implant is surgically placed in your jaw and isgenerally given 3 months to incorporate to the bone. Then an abutment and crownis screwed into the implant. Notice the adjacent teeth are left untouched. Youwill likely spend less time in the dental chair, but the implant, abutment andother necessary parts are very expensive. The laboratory work is also moreexpensive than a conventional bridge. The bottom line is once again….take care of what you alreadyhave. My note- After rootcanal, at different periods, for providing permanent porcelain teeth permanently for seventeeth, about 35000-00 I spent, by a very good dentist. Teeth has become almostnatural now. This was about one year back. I can eat murukku, sarkarapuratti etc, with these teeth. He was workingearlier in London. Q9 What can cause a burning-like plasticsmell in a bedroom? A10 David A.SmithAnswered 5h ago · Upvoted by Malcolm Sargeant, Degree level appliedchemistry + 20yr experience in corrosion prevention and water treatment “Why don't watercompanies make tap water distilled?” Three reasons: WAY too expensive.Distilled water is very energy intensive. WAY too corrosive. Distilled water will eat the interior of any pipesthey’d try to deliver water to you through. (Unless you spend even more moneyon the piping). Remember Flint Michigan and the problems they had? That waterwas just a little more acidic / less hard, and leached through the hardnessthat had been plated off in the pipe walls, to get to the base metals. Distilled water is toohard on the humans, pets, and plants that have to try and live on it. (ThanksTim Pearson!) ana Rameshwar My note- In Chennai inmy area East Tambram ROS water is supplied two pots on aternate days by the municipality FREE OF COST. ROS plants are installed , water taken from borewells in thestreets, and plants are there in most streets. One plant is about 20 metresfrom my home and we collect ROS water from them. Q11 How hard is it to grow garlic in yourgarden? A11 AndreaClemensBBA from University of Alaska Fairbanks (Graduated 2008)Oct 6 Not hard at all. To grow garlic greens indoors, plant threeor four cloves in a pot filled with potting soil. Sit them on a sunny windowledge and water them lightly. The garlic greens will grow in just seven to 10days and can be snipped. If you want entire heads of garlic you have to plantthem outside because they need the cold winter to produce the flower/bulb.Still easy. Just takes time and thinking ahead. Q12 Why is the middle east called themiddle east? A12 BalajiViswanathan student of world history.Sun At the heights of British Indian empire, the India Office came with a way to refer to areas relative to India andBritain. Britain is west, India is east. Any part of Asia east ofIndia is Far east and any part of Asia west of India is Middle east. As a side note, the Middle east region until a few decadesago used rupees as their currency and during the British Raj had a lot of theiraffairs managed out of Bomba and Delhi.
