Q1           Why domany ophthalmologists themselves not prefer LASIK surgery?

A             Ritika Mukhija Doctor. Eye Surgeon.Updated 4y

I was quite determined to get LASIK surgery done for myselfbefore joining
post-graduation. My plan was to get it done after completing myMBBS and the PG
entrance exams. So in the interim period, I consulted anOphthalmology senior
resident from AIIMS for the same. He clearly advised me against itbecause I was
planning to pursue Ophthalmology, the reason being LASIK is known toaffect
contrast sensitivity in some individuals and that could hamper
intricatevisualisation as required in a surgical branch.

So I was clear thatthere's no question of LASIK for me. I was definitely a bit
disappointedbecause spectacles and contact lenses used to be really troublesome
at times and because Iwas (and still am) practically blind without them.

After I joined the courseI read about every complication occuring during or
post LASIK, and even saw a few cases. A young ladywas admitted on my bed with
infective ulcers in both eyes post LASIK (she wasoperated outside AIIMS). She
later required a corneal transplant procedure forthe same in both eyes.
Although that's an extremely rare complication thesedays, but once you
personally witness something so bad you tend to becomeskeptical.
Ophthalmologistsknow way too much about LASIK to get it done without thinking
twice.

But that doesn'tapply to everyone. A very well-renowned Ophthalmologist got
his daughteroperated by one of my consultants during my posting with him. Also,
one of mycolleagues had already had LASIK done during her MBBS. She never faced
anyproblem during theresidency. My very ownsister got the surgery done while I
was doing my MBBS. She's doing fine and infact quite happy to have gotten rid
of the glasses.

I think it boils downto priorities in the end. For me, trading glasses for any
sort of risk to myeyes, however miniscule it may be is not an option. And I
feel most of thedoctors and not just ophthalmologists feel the same way. We
have been taught to thinkrationally right from medical school and in general
most of us do not belong tothe category of risk takers. Whatever valor or
boldness many of ushad is quite well suppressed over the years in medical
school and postgraduation!!

Also a minor point, although I do not wish to generalize, isthat we are
generally less bothered about our physical appearances. Thankfully,we have such
a huge variety of spectacle frames and lenses these days that theyare more of a
fashion accessory than a need.

Lastly, my two cents to anyone who wishes to get LASIK forthemselves. Please
readabout the procedure, its pros and cons and other alternatives. It's
awonderful surgery in more than 99% of the cases, but there are risks involved.
Always make an informed decision.

Q2           Whichprivilege in other countries makes you jealous?

A2           Rhasheed Vickers I always take notesin life, I also took
Sociologyclasses Wed

In Japan, there’s a village with a population of 400 something where fresh
spring waterflows into people’s houses.

You wash your veggies in it and whatever overflows goes backinto the
environment for the fish. You know how much I’d pay to retire here?

And if we goto the urban places like Tokyo, they have cooler mono rail systems
than we do.

Q3           Can youlive in Bengaluru without knowing Kannada?

A3           Aravind Varier Teacher(2011–present)Sat

You can live in anymetropolitan city having more than million (10 Lakhs)
population in India by ONLY knowing the Englishlanguage.

This is applicable to Bengaluru as well.

Let assume a French speaking person who understands Englishwas transferred to
Bengaluru as the director of any Mutli National Corporationlocated in the city.

This person would preferably stay in a villa at a gatedcommunity.

Most of the people who reside in this gated community wouldspeak English.

He can easily converse in English with the sales boy at thesupermarket.

The children of this gentleman will be studying at aninternational school where
English is the primary language.

Indians have to accept the Truth.    India is a English Speaking Country
andEnglish happens to be the language of the Elite class.

We got independence from British in 1947.However, the eliteclass during that
time promoted English by sidelining the mother tongue ofevery Indian.

We are still an underdeveloped country because we Indianscollectively disowned
our mother tongue for the English language.

Q4           Howdoes an airplane that weighs lots of tons go up in the sky?

A4           Kas Van Dam Master from Master ofArts Oct 5

Next time you’resitting in the car as a passenger crank open a window and put
your hand out at an angle wherethe front of your hand is higher than the back
(or if you want you can even buyminiature surfboards for it…).

Now you feel your handbeing pushed upwards. In a nutshell that’s how the wing
of an air plane works. Obviously it’s abit more complicated and it has a lot to
do with the special shape of air planewings…. But you get the idea! It’s air
pushingsomething upwards which is why air planes need to move forward (quite
fast) inorder to stay in the air. (Helicopters work pretty much the same
butinstead of the entire aircraft moving it’s just the blades moving fast
enoughto create enough lift).

Q5           Whydidn’t Rajendra Chola save Somnath Temple from Mahmud of Ghazni?

A5           Ambika Vijay Knows Tamil Thu

Rajendra was busy invadingthe territories in the western part of the Indian
subcontinent and parts of South east Asia.

Since, it was normal in those times for the enemy kings toengage in temple
desecration. Even if Rajendra had heard about the Somnathattack, he would have
caredless about it.

The Cholas themselves engaged in Temple desecration andlooting idols.

Rajendra I furnished his capital with images he had seizedfrom several
prominent neighbouring kings:

Durga and Ganesha images from the Chalukyas; Bhairava,Bhairavi, and Kali images
from the Kalingas of Orissa; a Nandi image from theEastern Chalukyas; and a
bronze Siva image from the Palas of Bengal [1]

Chola armies during the Chola - Chalukya wars were involvedin iconoclasm in the
Chalukya regions, where they converted a lot of JainBasadis into Shiva
temples.[2]

So, Somnath attackwouldn’t have evoked any emotions in a Chola king who himself
was engaged in temple desecration.

Tanjore inscriptions speak thus about the Chola raids andlooted treasures :[3]

Mention of attack onOdisha :

Masuni-desam, whose paddy-fields were green ;a large heap offamily-treasures,
together with many (other treasures), (which he carried away)after having
seized carried away) after having seized Indiradan of the old raceof the moon
together with (his) family, in a fight which took place in a hall(at) Adinagar,
(a city) which was famous for its unceasing abundance ;

Odda-vishayam, which was difficult to approach, (and which hesubdued in) close
fights ; the good Kosalai-nadu, where Brahmanas assembled ;Tandabutti (i.e.,
Danda-bhukti), in whose gardens bees abounded, (and which heacquired) after
having destroyed Dharmapala (in) a hot battle ; Takkanaladam(i.e.,
Dakshina-Lata), whose fame reached (all) directions, (and which heoccupied)
after having attacked Ranasura, (whose) strength departed,

Mention of Attack onVengala Desam (Bengal )

“Vangala-desam, wherethe rain did not cease, (and from which) Govindachandra,
(whose) fortunediminished, fled ; elephants of rare strength and treasures of
women, (which heseized) after having been pleased to frighten on a hot
battle-field Mahipala, who was deprived (even) of his slippers, bracelets and
ear-rings “

Attack on port city ofKedah, Sri Vijaya (Indonesia)

Seige of Kedah :

The inscription reads :

“and (who), — havingdispatched many ships in the midst of the rolling sea and
having caughtSamgramavijayottungavarman, the king of Kadaram, along with (his)
vehicles,(viz.) rutting elephants, (which were as impetuous as) the sea in
fighting, —(took) the large heap of treasures, which (that king) had rightfully
accumulated; the (arch called) Vidyadhara-torana at the “war-gate” of the
extensive cityof the enemy ; the “jewel-gate,’ adorned with great splendour”

The areas mentioned aboveare :

Masuni Desam, Madurai Mandalam, Adinagara in Odradesa(Orissa) under the
rulership of Indra-ratha, Southern Kosala, Dandabhukti ruledby Dhanapala,
Southern Lata under Rana-sura, Vangala (Bengal) under GovindaChandra, Uttar a
Lata under Mahipala, and the Pala ruler of Bengal, Kedah,Srivijaya (Indonesia)

Cholas were invaders to the above territories, just like howGhazni was an
invader to the western frontier regions.

The Chola - Chalukya wars are said to have costed 1 millionlives[4] The Chola
army right from Rajaraja’s times were pretty brutal :

Chola attack on Jain Basadis of Kollipaka (kulpak) :

So, if Cholaarmy had invaded Gujarat, they might have carried away the temple
treasurestoo.

Q6           Why iswhole wheat flour more expensive than regular flour?

A6           Alice Twain Eating and cooking for 40years. Oct 15

Because it is moreexpensive to produce, goes bad faster, and has a smaller
market.

Many people wrongly assume that whole wheat flour is made ofwhole wheat. It is
not. Thewheat must be refined, eliminating the wheat germ and most of the bran.

The germ, which isprone to get spoiled, gets preserved in a fridge, the bran
is separated andground, the refined wheat is ground as usual.

Immediately beforepackaging, the flour is mixed withwheat and oates bran (oates
bran has a better taste and lastsslightly linger before going rancid), and
sometimes a little wheat germ isadded. This is what goes on sale.

Q7           Can youexplain the Milky Way to me? Are we inside of it, or are we
part of the Milkyway?

A7           Chris Harrington Bachelor of FineArts from Academy of Art
University (Graduated 2011)Oct 12

Yes, andyes. We are inside it and we are a part of it.

If light pollution was not a problem, you could see the MilkyWay wrapping all
around our whole sky. From Earth, it looks like a band oflight. This is because
most of the galaxy is shaped like a disc, and we areclose to the edge of that
disc, roughly in the middle with respect to up anddown in the disc.

So most ofthe stars of the Milky Way form a band all around our sky as we look
into thedisc from within it.

The bulky part at the middle of the galaxy is mostly obscuredfrom us, since
much of the disc is in the way in that direction, but the centerof the galaxy
is in the direction of Sagittarius, so the band of the Milky Wayis a little
thicker that way and a little thinner the other way, toward Gemini.

We can’tactually see the structure of the Milky Way directly, so we’re really
guessingabout it’s shape. It’s apretty educated guess, but it’s still just a
guess. We’re pretty sure it’s abarred spiral galaxy. I’ll put a picture below.
As we get better and betterabout mapping the galaxy, we’ll know more,
obviously. But for now, that’spretty much everything I can tell you.

Q8           Whatcapital cities of the world were poorly chosen?

A8           teve Gray Former IT Support and ITSecurity at Various(including
healthcare, educaton, DOD, government) (1980–2015)41m

Probably Brasilia. It wasRio de Janeiro at first, much more logical, until the
government decided tobuild a new capital fromscratch.

They chose to build it in themiddle of nowhere, well stocked with diseases but
nothing else, and called itBrasiia.

To this day the vast majority of people who live there only do so because they
workthere for the government. A real backwater.

Q9           Whendid you realize small things matter?

A9           Manu Pandey 19 years old23h

Yesterday my mom was asking me whether I have seen any papercups or disposable
glasses.

When I asked her why she said that she is thinking of givingtea to laborers.

There are some worksgoing on in our area and also regarding the Vishwanath
Corridor, every lane isgetting refitted.

So, after a while, she prepared tea and gave it to them.

They were about toleave after finishing their work and then my mom gave them
tea.

They became very happy after seeing that and said that it wasrelaxing for them
to have tea after such a tiring day.

It indeed made them happy that was easily visible from theirwords and eyes.

It’s not so normalbecause no one pays heed to the laborers who are working
under the government.

Sometimes small things matter because they come at anunexpected time.I realized
this yesterday.

Q10         Why dolions attack from behind?

A10         Nick Nicholas Studied Big Cats for 40+ years Oct 13

There are severalreasons for this.

1 The prey animal is normally trying to run away from thelion:

2 Very few animals will try and face a lion head on. A capebuffalo or rhino
might but medium sized prey will not.

3 It makes sense to attackfrom the rear. The lion by attacking from the rear is
out of the way of teethand horns.

Once the animal is down it can go for the throat.
