RAMBHA
Dearfriends, Rambhais one among the four foremostapsarases-Urvasi, Menaka, Rambha and Tilothama. Inthe Viswamithra episode, I read, it was not Tilottama, but Rambha, deputed tointerrupt the penance of sage Viswamithra by Indra during the 2ndtime. Ithought of surfing a little and gather some more information about Rambha. I came to know Mahishasura toowas born to an asura by name Rambha. We can call him (he) Rambha. The following is a compilation with suitableedition about Rambha. Sincerely, GopalaKrishnan 28-10-2021. 1. Who was (SHE) RAMBHA? Rambhain Hindu mythology was the Queen of the Apsarases, the magical and beautifulfemale beings in Devaloka. Shewas unrivalled in her accomplishments in the arts of dancing, music andlove-making. She was often asked by theking of the Devas, Indra tobreak the tapasya of sages so that the purity of their penancewas tested against temptation, and alsothat the order of the three worlds remains undisturbed by any one man'smystical powers. 2. Failure of Rambha Whenshe tried to disturb the penance of Rishi Vishwamitra (who was doing it tobecome a Brahmarishi for the 2nd time), she was cursed by him tobecome a rock for 10,000 years till a Brahmin delivers her from the curse. 3. Rambha curse king Ravana Inthe epic Ramayana, Rambha was violated by Ravana, king of Lanka, who wasthereby cursed by Brahma that if he violates another woman again, his head willburst. This curse in factprotected the chastity of Sita, the wife of Rama when she iskidnapped by Ravana. 4. Seducing Sukracharya Rambhaalso tried to seduce Sukracharya while he was performing penance first time forMrithasanjeevani. 5. Husband and father in law Rambhawas the wife of Nalakuvara, the son of Kubera. 6. (HE) RAMBHA Legendis that an asura by name Danu had two SONS RAMBHA and Karambha. Both performed penances to gain more powers.Rambha performed the austerities by standing amidst five ritual fires calledPANCHAGNI and Karambha by standing in neck-deep in water. Indra, the lord of the gods, felt threatened by such intense austerities and took theform of a crocodile and killed Karambha. 7. Rambha gains boons from Gods Rambha, who came to know about his brother’s death, increased the intensity of hisausterities and won several boons from gods like great brilliance, beauty, invincibility in war. Most importantly, the boon that he will not be killed byhumans or Gods or Asuras (demons). 8. Rambha takes the form of a hebuffalo Afterreceiving the boon, he was roaming in the garden of Yaksha and there he fell inlove with a female-buffalo. To express his love Rambha took the form of amale-buffalo and copulated with the she-buffalo. Butsoon a real male buffalo discovered Rambha in the garden and killed him. Now recollect that Rambha had gotboon not to be killed by humans or animals but not invincibility. 9. Birth of Mahishasura. Thefemale-buffalo, who was pregnant, decided to kill herself in the funeral pyreof Rambha. She jumped into the pyre and from the pyre sprang up a mighty asura(demon) with the head of a buffalo and human body. This was Mahishasura. So it is new information to me Mahishasurawas the son of (he) Rambha. 10. Mahishasura Mardanam Mahishasuraconquered heaven, defeated Gods, made them slaves and declared he is INDRA.Some how a few Gods could reach Brahma, and all went to Vishnu and Siva. (She)Rambha the magical and beautiful female beings in Devaloka was a princess ofthe Hindu asura demons. Once she fell in love with a water buffalo, andMAHISHASURA was born out of this union. 11 Birth of Goddess Durga Theactions of Mahishasura caused intense anger in the Trimurtis. The angeremerging out of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva combined to the take the shape of aterrible form and this was Durga. 12 Goddess Durga kills Mahishasura Whenthe goddess was seen by Mahishasura, he fell in love with her and sought tomarry her. The goddess promised to marry him, if he defeated her in the battle.A terrible combat ensued and continued for nine days. Finally, Durga assumed the terrifying form of Chandikaand pinned Mahishasura down with her foot and pierced his neck with herspear and she cut his head off with her sword. Thelegend about the killing of Mahisha is found in many Puranas and thereforethere are slight variations in the story. The story is also found in VamanaPurana, Varaha Purana, Shiva Purana, Skanda Purana, Devi Bhagavatam and KalikaPurana. 13.
