KAKKA KUYILAECHOLLU KAI NOKKANARIYAMO…
Dearfriends, NowadaysI wake up early by 4.30 AM. Today by 5.30 AM I heard the sound of crows and foundtwo of them in the power line in front of my home. I was at large with thedrizzling they could recognise and eat if I provide biscuit bits. They flew awaywithout waiting for my biscuit bits in a minute intimating they were onlyresting. Ithought today I can write about the crows and their life and mythology storiesabout them. Sincerely, GoalKrishnan 29-10-2021 1. Life period of crows. I readthe life period of crows is ONE THOUSAND YEARS from Astrology book SampoornaJathaka Ganitham, by PS Nair Cherthala in page 497. Not only crows, eagles andsnakes are also told to have the same life period. Wedo not see naturally dead crows. We see dead crows accidentally facing deathtouching power lines or something like that, and falling down and all on asudden a lot of crows assembling there with crying for about 10 minutes andflying away expressing sorrow on their lost friend. Iam told they go to forest areas during their near death time and have their endthere. 2. Crow connected with ancestors. InHinduism, crow is given more prominence and belief is that they representancestors. Pindam is offered to crows on the sraadha day and after it is taken awayby crows the sraadha Brahmins get up during sraadha. Exception places are there like Tutucorinin Tamilnadu, where crows spent time only in sea cost. Amongother Hindu communities also Pinda is offered to crows on the annual day withsmall karmas, and unless the crow immediately takes it, everybody become moody. The karha and relatives become happy onlyafter crows take it.Pinda size by othercommunities are larger than ones offered by Bahmins. 3. Andan kakka or Bali kakka. Thoughthere is a normal size of crow about one feet length, and about 3 inches in thestomach area as diameter, some crows are still bigger in size. During sraaddha day we call it “Kaa…Kaaa...Kaa“ and from any where they come and sit in nearby compound walls , tree branchesor coconut trees. But unless such a bigger andankakka arrive, whatever we call “Kaa…Kaaa..Kaa “ nothing responds coming andtaking the pinda. Sometimes others may come, close, but never touchthe Pinda or rice disappointing us. Oncethe andan kakka arrive, it makes a good landing and touch pinda and hit with its beak and it get separated to twoor three parts and take one or two beak full of rice from pinda. Oneby one the crows take the pinda and spread rice- there is no quarrel amongthem. It can consume only what it cantake in its beak . We could see the more hungry ones eat one or two beakssitting near the pinda and later taking in beak and flying off. Weconsider the andan kakka as our ancestor to whom the sraadha is performed. 4. Waiting for pinda Thereare instances the crow wait for the pinda. As sraaddha is getting performed, many times I have seen my father telling- I am coming with Pinda on hearing thesound of crows. Without waiting for keeping the pinda as if taking from hands, thecrows used to take it flying all on a sudden. 5. Crow feeding Noday passes without feeding crows when we are available at home .After cookingrice, taking a small quantity and offering for crows. Mostlythe crows come in time, even without calling, sometimes at their own time. Noday it remains without taking by crows. Sometimes biscuit bits are also added. I think this offering rice to crows might have itsbeginning to Nithyasraadha. I feel guilty if my wife forgets to feed crows and we have startedeating it. While the rice vessel is brought to dining table I first look andensure there is a slanting cutting with chattukam(Spatula). Or else I confirmfrom wife, it is offered. Wemay keep previous day rice for cows or dogs outside home, even it may be takenby crows, but it is notconsidered in place crow feeding. 6. Waiting crows Astold in the previous para, I had seen old rice kept outside for cows or dogs, eatenby crows also. But there is decorum. If a cow comes, crow waits for its finish. If a dog appears , and crow is by the side, dog wait for the crow to FINISH. Crowmay come two or three times, take rice in its beak and fly to nearby tree. Thedog waits till the crow flew away. But once the dog touches, THE CROW NO MORE TOUCH THAT RICE. 7. Kakka kuli and crow drinking water. Veryoften we can see crows drinking water from watery areas where rain watercollected , from water tank overflowingwater or from flower pots while we water it etc. But it does not drink stagnated water. If we keep water in a pot on roof top, it wouldpleasingly drink. Rarelywe may see the crows taking bath rolling in a pool of water. It is told weshould not observe it. Butwhat to do? If at all we go after 10 minutes, still we can see, in front of usit again dashes to water, waiting as if our coming out side. It is told somebad news may come if we see crow taking bath. Aperson hurriedly taking bath is compared to crow taking bath. There are certain procedures andtiming to take bath. We should notprolong too much or reduce to little. 8. Crow- Vehicle of Saneeswara. DuringSaturn’s period if ill effects are more, it is advised to offer sesame mixed rice to crows. ONLYWHEN ILL EFFECTS ARE THERE. 9. Crow in temple premises. Wecan rarely see crows sitting insidethe temple premises also. When sreebaliis performed to balikkal , afterthooval, it is cleaned with water and crows found taking the falling rice bits. CROWS ARE NOT WANED OFF. 10 Jayantha son of Indra assuming theform of crow. Thereis a legend while Sree Rama was in forest life at Chitrakood, Indra’s sonJayantha started attacking Seetha in the form of a crow having a likingto her. On hearing the cries of Seetha ,Sree Rama recognising , the crow was Jayantha sent his Brahmasthra at him. Nobodycould help Jayantha from it and he prostrated before Sree Rama to leave him.Sree Rama asked him to give one of the eye balls (as crow) to the asthra sinceit cannot be taken back without hitting. >From then onwards the crow is said to haveonly one eye ball though two eyes >arethere. The same eye ball is rotatedto either side it is told, 11. Crow do not become close to bebrought up as a pet bird Thoughexceptions are there, generally crows cannot be brought up as a pet bird. It never tries to associate. I think, since they represent ourdead ancestors and left us , it is being so. Howeverwhile giving biscuits I have observed they sit so close of about one foot away. 12. Crow- an intelligent bird. Crowis an intelligent bird and there are many legends about its intelligence. They live in herds. Nowa day we can see its intelligencethat it do not caw and call othersunless more food is found. If the quantity offered is felt only sufficient for it , it does not caw nowadays. If I keep 10-15 biscuit bits it caw ,butonly two or three it never caws and simply takes it in its beak. 13. Crows do not mate in humanpresence. Oneof the very few things noted is crows do not mate in our presence and go over to far off areas while mating. Exceptionis already mating, and we see them while stepping out 14. Crow flying distance Crowsdo not fly at a stretch. They take rest at certain distance, from this the crowflying distance. Further they fly only in a straight direction. From this thecrow flying direction phrases. 15 The title Song from film Bharthavu -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Thatha_Patty" group.
