VAISALI ANDMALINI

Dearfriends,

Yesterdaynight in the program Badai Banglavu, the guest was Smt.Geetha acted
in the Malayalamfilm Vaisali.

Vaisali was a very successful film, and often shown in TV also. Smt.Geetha
acted in thefilm as Malini.

Onseeing the program a doubt came in my mind in which epic the story was told
andwho narrated the story. I searched my old postings and found a posting on
thetopic with answer to my doubt. I thought sharing the story and answer.

Thisre-posting is an edited version of the same. Hope an enjoyable reading
aboutMalini and Vaisali.

 Sincerely,

1. Introduction

I sawlong back the Malayalam film VAISALI when I visited home for a function
alongwith my relations in the local theatre in 1988 end. I surfed the net
regardingVAISALI for recollection. Shewas the daughter of a maid MALINI BY KING
LOMAPADA of Angarajyam.

Shewas instrumental in luring and bringing Sage RISHYASRINGA son of
sageVIBHANDAKA to Angarajyam, to bring rain (after a draught of 12 years) by
conductinga yagya by him.

Ingratitude, king Lomapada married his adopted daughter SANTHA, born to
kingDASARATHA AND KOUSALAYA to Sage Rishyasringa. I thought the little VAISALI
ANDMALINI is apt one.

 2. Dasaratha begets a daughter.

Thisincident should be at least about 15 years back to the Puthra Kama Ishti
yagaby king Dasaratha, performed by sage Rishyasringa. At that time king
DASARATHAhad only one queen KOUSALYA. Kousalya gave birth to a female child.
The childhad slight disability in leg. Dasaratha was unhappy.

 3. Dasaratha gives his daughter to kingLomapada in adoption

Kulagurusage VASISTHA advised if the child was given in adoption to a king, her
disabilitywould disappear. At that time king Lomapada of Angaraiyaam was
desiring toadopt a child. His capital was Chambapuri (Angarajyam).

Inobedience to kulaguru Vasistha, Dasaratha gave his daughter in adoption to
hisfriend KING LOMAPADA.

Whata wonder! Her disability of leg   disappeared. She was named SANTHA.

3a. Dasaratha marry two more princes

Yearspassed. Kousalya did not deliver any more children. So Dasaratha married
twomore princes in due course- KAIKEYI AND SUMITHRA. They became the 2nd and
3rdqueens.

My note- Now we can understand that Kaikeyiwas very young.

 4. Draught in Angarajyam

Aboutthis time draught appeared in Angarajyam due to the curse of a Brahmin on
theking,  as he did not listen to him onsome issue. No rain at all. It
continued for 12 years.  How to bring the rain was the problem of kingLomapada.

HisRajaguru was away with his son, since his son started loving VAISALI,
daughterof Malini, which the king did not approve.

SomehowLomapada pleaded and got him to Chambapuri to conduct a yagya and
please INDRAAND GET RAIN. It was the period Indra was the lord of rain.

4a. Malini and Vaisali with groupsproceed to deep forest

Rajagurugot a mystic vision on the night he arrived in Chambapuri. He should
get sage RISHYASRINGA (having two horns in the head) from forests and yagya has
to beperformed by him only. Rishyasringa was son of sage VIBHANDAKA. He was
bringingup his son with least knowledge of women in deep forest.

Rajaguru, specifically desired Vaisali for the mission. Vaisali proceeded with
her motherMalini and group of people to forest through river. Vaisali and
Malini aloneproceed deep forest.

 5. Rishyasringa gets lured by Vaisali

Forthe teenager, not to have the smell of women, Vaisali was a wonder. He
gotlured by her. Vibhandaka smelled the danger after a day. But he could not
change his sonmuch.

Atone moment, Rishayasringa felt he was getting attracted by a MAYAVI, and
wantedto restart his penance, he was about to curse Vaisali, and Malini
appeared inthe scene.

Malini appraised the mission and begged notto curse her daughter. Knowing he
hasthe power to bring rain, Rishyasringa proceeded with them to
Champapurihappily.

Atchampapuri, as the people proceeded receiving Rishyasringa, poor Malini was
left behind. No body to care. No sentences are sufficient to describe the scene-
everybodypushing her back. Really the scenes of the film came before me on
seeing actressGeetha as guest.

 6. Rain, rain, rain

AsRishyasringa  started performing yagya atChampapuri, clouds appeared, and
when he completed it was RAIN, RAIN RAIN. Everybodyenjoying the huge rainfall
and water after 12 years.

 7. Reward to Rishyasringa.

Kulaguruappraised king Lomapada to give a suitable reward to the sage,
marrying his adopteddaughter SANTHA TO RISHYASRINGA.

EvenLOMAPADA WOULD HAVE HAPPILY MARRIED VAISALI TO THE SAGE, but for the
compulsionof Kulaguru, Santha adopted daughter was married  so that the
offspring will rule the kingdom as his successor.

Kulaguruwas specific Vaisali should not get married to the sage..  It was late
Netumuti Venu acted  as Kula guru.

8. Vaisali rushes to Malini

Vaisalitoo got neglected now . She realized the situation.  She rushed to her
mother struggling inrainwater. In the happiness, nobody cared Malini and
Vaisali.

Forthe people after getting the rain they were nothing to care….

9. King Yudhisishtira listens to sageVedavyasa.

Theabove legend about Santha, Dasaratha, Lomapada, and Rishyasringa,  and of
course MALINI AND VAISALI was  told by sage Vedavyasa to KING  YUDHISTHIRA.

Vedavyasawas  grandfather of Pandavas. The incident  might  have been after
the  Great War.

Endnote- After Reading from Wikipedia about film Vaisali, the legend is very
muchsummarized and told here. For the film the story is retold by the
greatMalayalam writer – M T Vasudevan nair.
